Sick of the Roller Coaster

I’ve had some great progress in weight loss (losing around 50lbs) and then it goes back up; and so on. I lose motivation and discipline. So, I would like tips on how to stay off of that roller coaster 🎢 and maintain the discipline of eating and working out. Feel free to add me as a friend!! 😊

Oh hello there, are you me? I'm a lifelong yo-yo dieter and joined MFP pretty recently, when I was almost at maintenance already, simply because THIS, RIGHT NOW, is when I get complacent and up, up, up goes the scale and the sizes of my clothing.
If you want, we can support each other here. This site is literally the only difference between my past losses and gains and my most recent one. I'll send a request, and my diary is open so you can check it out (but don't use last Friday the 15th as an example of healthy living, lol!)2 -
LOL - Okay, I’ll look for your request! Thanks.0

Do you weigh daily, @iam_brandilei? I do that and it keeps from getting too far off track. I record the numbers in a weight trending app (Libra). I just accept the daily fluctuations but I know that I have to dial the calories back when the trend line starts pointing up.1

Log everything. That keeps me accountable. On Saturday I had a lot of White Claws and McDonalds after a long day of snacking. I went well over my calorie goal and it's good to see it all logged into my diary. To me, I felt like a huge failure and wanted to give up. But in the long term of how that day will affect my goals? It won't, really.
I second weighing daily, and tracking that too. Whether on here, another app, or on paper (I have a log in my bathroom where I weigh myself every morning.) You will see a lot of fluctuation but over time you will see the downward trend.1 -
You have to figure out what your trigger is for quitting. What changes where your health and well-being are no longer a priority? Without knowing why you quit, the cycle will continue.2

@alteredsteve175 I used to weigh weekly, not daily. I don’t have a scale at the moment, bc it went out. I synced with an app on my phone. It tracked other things as well. I will get another one.0

@ellie117 Yes, I have to get back in the habit of tracking everything; no matter how ugly it is. I tracked yesterday and I’m tracking today. I may have to do the daily weigh-in for a little (when I get my new scale). I used to try and weigh in weekly at the most.3

@LyndaBSS - you are absolutely right!! I’m sure I’m guilty of letting life’s obstacles derail me and that has to stop.1

I really think mind-set is everything! When you want something so bad, you just set about a way to do it! I’ve always been on the stocky side and I’ve always accepted it but no more.... I’ve made up my mind and it’s worth it’s weight in stone!! Mind set... now off you go 👍🏽2

You are not alone in the roller coaster thing. It's very difficult to make lifetime changes but that's what will get you there and keep you there. I'm 66 and have been on that roller coaster most of my life. In fact, high weight for 2019 was 160 but some years I've been over 200. Back down to 139.5 so I'm keeping fingers crossed I don't let myself get derailed during the holidays. But I can only think it'll be easier this time because of this place! So good luck to you, stay strong, you can and will do this!2

Hi. Think this is the group for me as I have gained and lost weight forever! Am 73 and now facing blood pressure issues and bad knees. I feel like this is it for me, that this time I have to keep the weight off. Good news is I am motivated which is part of the battle...getting and staying motivated. Between that and insatiable cravings when the time comes are my biggest challenges. Looking for support and sharing experiences.2

@XLNC1981 Thank you for that! #Mindset0

@ReenieHJ Yes, a lifetime change (long-term) is key. I've had short-term successes which is what keeps the roller coaster going. Tracking and being held accountable in places like this are very helpful. Good luck to you, too! Thank you!0

@gruiz21 I definitely want you to stay motivated! Our health is key. You can do it!0

So much of our good/bad health is under our control. Good luck to you for turning yours around!! It's worth it. You'll find so much understanding support on the forums and I, myself, have found great motivation with simply doing my food and exercise diary. BTW, I'm 66 and it is better late than never!1
