Dumbells for P90x

So I just bought some dumbells for P90x, I have been using the resistance bands but I really find them quite restrictive. Im an average sort of strength guy, do you think these weights will be enough? I guess since they are 20kg's the most i can hope for is 10kg in each arm. Right now I can't even think how much that even is! http://www.amazon.co.uk/York-20kg-Cast-Iron-Dumbell/dp/B004ELB550

Well, I've heard Tony Horton mention he's using 40lbs or 30lbs or 20lbs, which I assume is each arm. Soooo, you're probably too light with 20kg for both. BUT give it a try *shrug*0

I use 8lb, 10lb and 12lb but thats just me0

Yeah, that's probably a little light for several of the exercises. You'll progress beyond that pretty quick. If money is the issue, I'd just check out craigslist, eBay, or garage sales for used stuff. Nothing wrong with used weights. It worked for me for two rounds of P90X. Eventually I just invested in the adjustable dumbbells, but that's a little more pricey.0

Well the big ones on there are 2.5kg's, I take it there is no reason why I can't buy more 2.5kg's? The bar is long enough right?0

I used the bands for "pulls ups" (80 & 100 lb strength) only, rather than the pull up bar on a door.
You will find out quickly if the weights are enough for you or not. There are a few exercises where you need a lighter weight 10 lbs (4-5 kg?) and some that you will build up to 40 lbs (18 kg?)
You will love (and hate) the P90X system.
Good luck...0 -
Thats a pretty good starter set. I have a similar set I've had for years except my biggest plates are 2kg instead of 2.5. So my top weight was 7.5kg per hand.
Just today I got 4 new 5kg plates (cost about £35 from ebay but you could probably get cheaper) so I can go up to 17.5kg in each hand - which I'm reliably informed should be enough for my first round of p90x.
And hey, if that becomes too light, I've got 2 10kg plates so if I get 2 more, I'm up to a theoretical max of 36.5kg! Be a bit tricky to handle them that big though…0 -
Hey - that's prob not enough once you progress like Tharrop says, ..you're gonna need a bigger boat soon
I use adjustable ones with the spinlock, from 6 to 30kg depending on the exercise. They can be expensive but i just bought all the different plates in my supermarket (Tesco) and it works out a ton cheaper than buying from a bodybuilders shop. Once you've done a few weeks, you'll need bigger plates rather than lots of little ones, - it kinda makes them more awkward..

ps - the lowest you'll need is between 4 & 8kg for weighted circles, it's the lightest weight for a killer exercise. Even the guy in the video fails halfway through, but when you do some of the back exercises, lawnmowers etc, i think you'll need to double up on the weights. Good luck with the program0 -
I bought 4x5kg weights to go with them today aswell. I'll see how that goes. I"m on week 3 of p90x though, so im going to have to work out which weight im suitable for in exchange for the bands0

I used 20's and 30's. For the most part they worked just fine! I did at times find the weights to be to light/heavy. I just went out and bought some adjustable dumbbells the other day! Can't wait to try another round using those things!0

I am at 23.5 pounds each arm so you'll probably want to go a little heavier. I don't know how strong you are at the moment but you'll probably up your weight fairly quickly. I bought two inexpensive dumbbell bars with threads on the end. That way I can add plates as I need to increase my weight. I did find it was a bit inconvenient so I just bought another pair and some extra plates so I can have a couple of them loaded up. The bars were $5 each and the plates vary in price depending on what you get. I have 2.5 and 5 pound plates but I need to get a couple of 10's too. The bonus is you can find the plates at garage sales and thrift stores and it's a little cheaper than craigslist.0
