Hey, fun fact. . . Tell me a fun fact about yourself!

I was thinking about this after talking with a friend. It’s more of an interesting fact of where I went to high school. It’s considered an “alternative” school. Back when it started in the 70’s it was for “troubled youth”. But in the 80’s it changed. It’s a public school but small. I had 40 something in my graduating class. You have to interview and get accepted. Maintain a C average and it has a zero violence policy. Which was a huge switch from the school I attended 9th grade for. Lots of gangs and violence and fighting. What this meant for us was:
No bells, first name basis with teachers and staff (who seemed to mostly be hippies), you could hang out in the halls during free periods (some people napped), arts heavy, but still a rigorous workload in main subjects, no sports teams (you had to go to your “home school” in the district to participate in sports), couches in some of the classes, kids hanging out in classes during free periods playing dungeons and dragons or something, graduation....every student went up with their home group teacher (who was more like a parent by this point in some ways) and could say whatever they wanted. We didn’t do standardized testing or finals. We had to write papers and either demonstrate or verbally communicate that we were competent in the areas we needed to be. It was an entire class they took the whole year. We had an all school “Thanksgiving Feast” every year (6-12 grade) where people brought dishes to pass and the school served the gross school turkey and potatoes (which I actually liked🤣) and alumni would visit. Our school colors were “rainbow” and we voted on the senior colors every year. We had some interesting electives like “batik” and “creature connection” (a class where you watched movies like Rosemary’s Baby and discussed symbolism and such) and “Sense and Sensibility” where you would watch Jane Austen movies and discuss. And one of the best electives...Canoe Class. I don’t remember what the class was but the final week we canoed 40 miles on the Wisconsin River, camped on sand dunes....some kids may have gotten high in their tents and then raided coolers to make pudgie pies at night.🙈
It was an amazing school experience. And not that I always liked going but, even then, I knew how special it was. I didn’t take for granted how lucky I was to be able to go there. I still exchange Christmas cards with my home group teacher and it’s been “several” years since I’ve graduated. lol. And now you know that there are actually weird public schools like this in existence.
