I lost 14lbs in less than a month when my heart got broken and my life turned upside down. I joke that at least I’ll look good. But truth is I want to continue but lack motivation. My emotions get in the way of me running with this. I could use some tips and or your experience on how to take this heartache and turn it into something wonderful for myself. I am new to this app but not new to exercise but not good at healthy eating.

The good news is, that perceived healthy eating isn't necessary for weight loss.
You don't have to overhaul your whole diet in a day. I'd suggest starting small, set yourself an appopriate weight loss rate (fastest is not always the best) and log your normal food intake for a couple of days - with a food scale if you have one, for accuracy.
Once you can see what you're eating now, you can make slight changes to your diet to get down to your calorie goal, not forgetting to eat at least some of your exercise calories (50% is a good starting point).
Small changes can be things like:- Switching to a lower fat/lower sugar version of something that you already eat.
- Reducing portion sizes of higher calorie/lower nutritional value items
- Increasing portion sizes of lower calorie/higher nutritional value
- Being mindful of condiments/drinks/oil used in cooking
- Cooking your own food more often rather than eating out

I totally hear where you are coming from. In Aug last year, my heart was spectacularly broken and I too am one who finds it difficult to eat when devastated ... within 2 months I had lost 28 lbs (2 stone). The bad news kept coming in form of the other woman being pregnant and subsequently having my ex's baby 4 months after we split and she is now living my life.
Awful as it sounds the app, my food and exercise gave me something to focus on, to keep my mind occupied something I was doing just for me to make me feel better about myself. I joined a gym (having lost my PT - who was my ex) and have thrown myself into healthier eating, making better choices and exercise ... I laugh now that a £30 gym membership is the brokenhearted girl's best friend! Maybe focusing on healthy eating (plenty of tips here) and putting an exercise plan in place will help you through it.21 -
I lost 40 pounds after a break up once.
It was great!6 -
Sorry to hear about your heartbreak...I'm an emotional eater, so I would most likely gain weight after a heart break. I would encourage you to continue to focus on eating healthy and move forward. You will find another love some day and you will be ready!3

I lost my mom a week before this last Christmas, and my FIL at this Thanksgiving. Every day has been an emotional struggle recently and it's a good day if I can accomplish at least one goal I set at bedtime for the next day. I'm surprised at how well I'm managing the weight loss so far. I guess it helps to keep my mind focused on something positive rather than the heartbreak. Best of wishes and hugs to the OP.17

Oh I’m so so sorry to hear about your devastation. I was in a very similar situation two years ago. Lost 15 pounds because I was so depressed and really had very little appetite (which has never happened to me before.) I found talking with my loved ones the best medicine. And time. Time is the hard part.
If you can just get out for a walk and chat with your girlfriends that will make a world of difference. I also started reading this book. It’s helped me a lot. ‘Inward’ by Yung Pueblo. His words are truly amazing and often very applicable for someone dealing with heartbreak. You can follow him on Instagram too. He posts a lot of his poems/words.
Take good care and know that something great is around the bend. xo7 -
Get social, talk with friends, family. Stay active with whatever it is you like to do, even if you feel like all you're doing is 'fake it till you make it'. If you have extra time in your life, find a cause you care deeply about and volunteer some time towards it. Thinking about others usually helps take the focus off ourselves. Time will soften those sharp corners off your life once again. And if you feel the need, please don't think therapy is something to avoid. We all go through break-ups and loss but it's how we handle them that's different for each of us. Sometimes we need a helping hand, or two.
You have your whole life ahead of you.
There will be lots of opportunities to meet the right person. Don't lose out by looking back. This is probably all still feeling fresh and hurtful. You will turn this around and find your best you yet, then be ready for adventure and love once again.
Wishing you the very best of luck and good health!! Read the posts on this forum; lots of wisdom and experience as far as how to eat healthy.
And if you're okay in the exercise department, get right back to it, even if your brain is telling you to hunker under the covers and eat ice cream. With food, start with basic lean protein, vegs., fruit, whole grains, lean dairy, and learn from there. Did you plug in your statistics so you can start logging calories/exercise and have those types of goals?3 -
Sorry about your breakup.Been there w the breakup WL..Just try to focus on you and being around friends and family.Distractions help..stay social.
As far as eating,I would try meal prepping..I usually make meals for 2-4 days at a time, then add on every few days..I save 2 days out of the week to eat out,or hang w friends..hugs to ya!2 -
Sorry to hear, heart breaks are never good. That being said, exercise is a great way to stay positive I find. I'm always in a better mood when I'm running.4

Everyone else had great advice, especially about diet. I'm going to underscore the part about exercise making you feel better. It can be really soothing and help you heal your heart. If you find the right kind of thing, something you really enjoy, exercise can enrich your life so much. You don't just have to run, or walk, or work the elliptical, though those can be good. You could also take out your frustrations on the heavy bag, slam imaginary heads into the ground with the medicine ball, wrestle with an exercise rope, breathe deeply and sooth yourself with tai chi or yoga, or feel immensely powerful with a barbell and a bunch of plates. Once you find that thing you like doing, exercise becomes something you do for yourself, it's "me time," and health is a nice side bonus.3

My story is the opposite of yours. I was losing weight using MFP and feeling great about it. That's when I started dating "Mr Wonderful". He's big on walking and nature, so we went on lots of great day trips in the mountains and by the sea. I was in the best shape of my life. Then he started making plans with other people. Then he went on his merry way. Then I started eating comfort food and staying home. Every time I tried to get out and enjoy nature on my own, I was reminded of him. Now I'm close to my starting weight when I first came to MFP, and I can't seem to get back on track.
That said, there are many wonderful things about MFP that are very helpful. Planning meals in advance gives you a chance to see where you have been going wrong with your diet. Informed choices are easy. I love seeing that little grid at the bottom of each day when I made good choices "Wow, did I do a good job of lowering my carbs!!". You have all the power in your hands. MFP is a great tool. I wish you all the best!11 -
Watch the movie, Heartbreak Ridge. Seriously. Whether you like it or loathe it, it will take your mind off your trouble. At least for 2:10.
Then decide. Are you going to pine away in self pity or start climbing out of that pit of sorrow? Either sit in the pit or get moving towards some sort of goal.
Not saying that a break-up is easy to handle, or a good cry doesn't help, just that your future is in your hands - not in anyone else's.
Planning your meals will also help get your mind off the hurt. Forcing yourself to stick to the plan will also help.
Good luck.

The best revenge is to look good, feel good, so that when you and that person run into each other again, you will look fab and feel good enough to smile confidently.... former BAE lost out on a great thing!
I was in my early 20s when I had the worse heartache I've ever had. Ran into him later after a year, and I was oh so fabulous, great job, great new living space.
Now he was running after me, and I said too late buddy.
When a door closes, keep it closed. That person is not the right one for you for whatever reason. Just thank your lucky stars.5 -
She is living your life with a cheater. What was done to you will probably happen to her as well, but she will have a child to raise on her own.1

Rule number one is love yourself! So work in your mind and body and health and then your heart will heal, always remember life is short don’t waste into tears or sadness.3
