My donation:
I've always wanted to grow my hair long enough to donate to Locks of Love.
Then I found out they charge for their wigs (sliding scale based on parental income). Boo.
Stumbled upon Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program.
They provide free wigs to female cancer patients.

It takes 6 donations to make 1 wig.
Join me. I've been counting down the days for the past three months until it was finally long enough. Help me to put a smile back on some troubled woman's face. Give her a small respite in her storm.

What a beautiful thing you are doing. Thank you:flowerforyou:0
-
You look great with short hair(and a big heart!)0
-
Wow this is such a great thing you're doing. I had to see the before pic to recognize you, ya know?! You look fabulous. And I bet you're teaching your daughter about what you are doing. I love it when people do stuff like that.:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0

LOVE the new cut, Lauryn! It is very flattering on you!
I'm cutting mine off in April for the same cause as are 2 of my girlfriends! That's 3 more ponytails! WOO HOO!
I love this organization & am SO glad that you decided to donate to them! YAY for you!0 -
Do they take men's hair with grey in it?
Ahhhhh, screw it, I'll just keep donating my time and money to the Jimmy Fund (childrens cancer research and the Boston childrens hospital)
It's a noble cause Lauryn, I commend your efforts!0 -
That's GREAT, Lauryn. You look fantastic!!!!:flowerforyou:0

OMG, I will have to ask my mother if she knew that. She donates to locks of love like 2 or 3 times a year. Her hair grows so fast and she is always going and getting it all choped off. I love your new do and I am glad you found a great cause. I have always wanted to donate but they will not take color treated hair and I always have highlights. Well you look great!0
-
Wow! I love the new haircut. That style looks great on you. Is your hair naturally curly? Just curious...mine is and while I would love that type of cut, I don't have the patience to straighten it every day!
What is the minimum length you can donate for the beautiful lengths program? Thank you for opening our eyes about Locks for Love charging!0 -
Very cool! :smokin:
Love the new do, too! :drinker:0 -

8''-10'' for Beautiful Lengths
(Locks of Love needs 10''-12'')
And I'm not trying to say Locks of Love is a bad program. It isn't. I just hate that parents are charged (some rate) for a wig for their child. That isn't publicized and I feel they keep that info quiet. I think companies, like Pantene, should do their part to truly help others -- by providing free wigs to those in need with the help of those who can donate.
My hair is naturally curly... wavy. (My daughter has more 'curl', I have more 'wave', but we shall see how my hair does now that the weight has been removed. It might curl more.)0 -

Check out the requirements for Beautiful Lengths.
They DO accept certain colored hair.... depends on the dye type.0 -
Here are the requirements from the site:
Requirements for Donating Your Hair
In order to make the most beautiful, realistic and durable wigs, donated hair must meet the requirements below.
* Donated hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long (measure hair from just above the elastic band of the ponytail to the ends).
* Wavy/curly hair texture is fine—you may straighten hair to measure.
* Hair should be freshly washed and completely dry, without any styling products.
* Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes. It cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.
* Hair may not be more than 5 percent gray.
Here's why:
* It takes at least six ponytails to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig; in general, each ponytail comes from a different person and is a different color. Even though some hair colors may look similar, including gray hair, each is completely unique.
* For a realistic-looking wig that has consistent color throughout, donated ponytails must be processed and then dyed to the same shade. It is critical for each ponytail to absorb dyes at the same rate in order to create wigs of consistent, natural-looking color.
* Gray hair, as well as some chemically-treated or permanently-colored hair, does not absorb dye at the same rate as other types of hair. It is much harder to color and, once colored, fades more quickly.
* Most permanently-colored hair, once it is processed and re-colored, is too fragile and breakable under the rigorous processing required during the production of a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig.
In appreciation of the sacrifice that a hair donation requires, Pantene Beautiful Lengths only accepts hair it knows can be used for its intended purposes.

As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor who was able to receive a free wig, I say a huge THANK YOU!! I can't even begin to describe the gratitude and love that I feel towards women, girls, and yes even men who are willing to donate for this program. My mom is 2 years cancer free and has passed her wig on to a friend who is currently undergoing chemo. So, that 1 wig has already helped 2 beautiful women.0
-
The new cut looks great on you!
Great cause!
I have to say I know lots of young women thru my under 40 breast cancer group who used wigs and it really does help while going thru such a traumatic time. When it was warm enough-I sported my baldness around - I hoped people would realize....bald is beautiful...(I know what a weirdo )
The wigs really do mean alot to those who wear them!0 -
Yikes! My DH donated to Locks of Love when he cut off his hair. Now I wish we'd known about this program. :frown:
Yes, he used to look like a 14 year old girl After two years of begging he chopped off the hair and I put a little weight on him.

This made me stop and laugh. When I was dating my husband, his sister pulled out a picture, kinda similar to this one. And I said, "Who is this girl in the picture? She smiles just like..." Insert foot in mouth right?! Everyone busted out laughing.
Now my hubby is working out and shaves his head. I totally could relate!!
P.S. Is that a Lord of the Rings head piece??:laugh:0 -

YAY! Work pics! Perhaps he'll need to grow it out again sometime & then he can donate. He looks like he'd have nice hair for it!0 -
bump because I want more people to consider donating their hair :flowerforyou:0

 The poor dear, everybody told him how beautiful his hair was his whole life. Then I come along and go 'You're serious?' And I don't know where he got that headpiece. He used to work for the Texas Renaissance Festival, that was his Elf Year. You should have seen his 'Fairy Year' :laugh:YAY! Work pics! I know its a good cause... And he really wants to grow it out again. I just like him looking like a man. I need to stop my selfishness.
Lauryn - I have mentioned this program to him and he's really keen to donate in the future! Thanks so much for the info. :bigsmile:0 -
My DD (7 ) wants to donate her hair. She was told by the hair dresser it wasn't long enough. So she just trimmed it then but it is time to cut it again. So what do we do to get it to them? Do we need to go to a special salon? Or just ask them to save it for donating?
I just put it in a pony tail at her shoulders and she has 11-12 inches.0 -
Here's the link for all the info on how to go about donating to them:

If you are in Canada, it is a different link, though. Good for your DD! That is so neat to do at such a young age!0 -
Hannah - LMBO! I don't know WHY you'd want your husband to look like a man! The audacity! :laugh:0

great job lauryn! you look HOT! :drinker:0

Have the hairdresser rubber band the ponytail and cut it off.
You bring home the ponytail with you. (It's kinda funny - weird to carry it out.)
You put it in a ziplock baggie and mail it in. Simple as that!
Directions are on the site, or I can email them to you, if you like.0 -
You look great. I wish my hair would grow long so I could donate it. But it gets to a certain length and seems to stop. My oldest daughter has the thickest hair and I think she should donate it, but she's too attached to it right now, and my mom (a breast cancer survivor) tells her not to get it cut off:huh:0

Tell daughter to raise funds for a cancer awareness walk instead. :flowerforyou: Will still be tremendously helpful until she's at a point where she wants to get rid of her locks.0 -
LOVE the cut, it's wonderful.
Awesome cause too... wish I wasn't so scissor happy all the time.0 -
God bless you. :flowerforyou:0
