Thinking of starting a Whole 30 during stay at home order. Thoughts?

What's your goal(s)?
It's really more of an elimination diet than a weight-loss diet, though some people do lose weight doing it. If weight loss is the goal, you may still want to calorie-count: I'm almost a poster child for the idea that it's possible to get obese and stay that way for decades eating mostly so-called whole foods (and get thin again eating the same foods, BTW - just less of them ).
It seems to help some people get more veggies and such into their eating, by having very strict rules. If you do well with strict structure, it may work well for you. If you tend to rebel against strict rules . . . maybe not.
For sure, there's nothing magical about it, for weight loss or health. It limits certain foods I personally consider not only very healthful, but delicious (legumes, dairy, grains, etc.), and I know I'm not allergic/sensitive to those foods, so I personally wouldn't choose to do it. But if you aren't sure whether you have food sensitivities, perhaps those eliminations would help you figure that out. (If you're pretty sure you have allergies/sensitivities but aren't sure what they are, a classic elimination diet, supervised by a Registered Dietitian and tailored to you, might be a better plan).
There are lots of different paths to weight loss and more nutritious eating. This can be a good one, for some. If it seems like a way of eating that would be useful and enjoyable for you, why not try it?2 -
Thank you for your thoughts. I do appreciate them. I have done Whole 30 before and felt so much better. That would be my goal. I was wondering if it would be too much given the way things are right now. Or maybe the focus would be good.
I've never posted before so thank you!1 -

It probably depends on your situation. If it's hard to get adequate fresh produce and meat or causes you to shop more than you otherwise would need to or if it would cause you to have to spend more time cooking in a way that's difficult, it might not work.
I actually think that if one were inclined it might be a good time, as being home all day could make cooking more time consuming options easier (especially if it's cooking time, not prep time), and -- especially -- it would be something different to think about besides you know what. And often just having a routine where you feel like you are doing things that are good for you can be very comforting.
For me, W30 is not consistent with my own health goals, as I think beans/other legumes and grains can be extremely healthy and avoiding those sources of protein (and dairy) would mean that I would need more meat than I otherwise eat. But I think the focus on home cooking and lots of vegetables and some fruit and so on is good and healthy and something I also try to focus on while including beans and lentils and peanuts and various kinds of grains in my diet.2 -
I'm not sure this is the best time for it. It restricts the foods you can eat, and if the current worldwide situation makes it difficult to find enough foods you like that are W30 compatible, you'll be restricted even more.
I certainly understand the need for some structure right now! You could always try to do it and just let it go if you have too much trouble getting a good variety of allowed foods.
Do you know what foods you eliminated the last time you did it made you feel better? If so, maybe just try to avoid that item right now. I'm not a fan of restrictive diets so I've never done it and not sure what steps you go through to determine how you are supposed to eat after the 30 days.
If it's not feasible right now, maybe focus on one or two easier goals, like getting enough protein and fiber, or limiting mindless snacking. Good luck whatever you end up doing!5 -
Thank you very much for your good ideas.1

I tried it once. I wouldn't wish being quarantined with me for the duration on my worst enemy.3

I am actually on day 47 of Whole 30. I am doing 60 days.
This has been the easiest Whole 30 yet, as there are no temptations from

Wisdom. There's so much I would like say but it wouldn't be prudent here.
