Logging = Epiphanies edition

Been logging for awhile now, even weighing things out to the T. I’ve noticed a couple things overlooked or just oblivious to before now....
* Oil in stirfrys : even a tiny amount = big calorie addition (I bet I always underestimated on this; trying to use less/none now)
* Sugar is !!! In everything.
* M&Ms: tiny little buggers are way too high in calories for the yumminess return!
* Maybe I need a degree to hit perfect macros daily!?
Easy to overlook/miss or just surprises: Got more ya’ll?...

Almond M&Ms are delicious and 1000% worth the calories. Plus I don’t feel as bad about eating them because I’m getting an almond with my chocolate lol5

Logging is one of the best ways to maintain weight loss over the long run for the reasons you mention. It's surprising how much you can eat without even knowing it. Just be careful about hitting the macros from a psychological standpoint. There have been concerns raised that macro-based dieting can cause a form of eating disorder, don't be too strict and give yourself some wiggle room and you'll do fine.3

As far as macros go, another reason to not worry so much is that the database items themselves may not even be accurate.2

Oils were a big eye opener for me.
Also sausages, specifically black pudding and white pudding. I love those but wow, so many calories.1 -
Slices of bread, sliced deli cheese, my turkey bacon.....I have to weigh these because one slice is not actually what the package says. It is much more.2

@nogymhero interesting, I can see how it could become an obsession. thankfully work usually keeps from having enough time to be overly into it. Also it’ll get boring soon enuf.

Chicken wings. One of our neighbors owns a Hooters and catered a neighborhood pool party. I had four wings and some little fried chicken slider, came home to log them, and nearly fainted.
I still can’t figure out where the calories were. There was no meat on them, you pretty much had to lick the sauce off. What an absolute sucking waste of good calories.6 -
These epiphanies are the training on which the success of calorie counting and logging is based. Forget about the big decisions. Concentrate on the small ones. We can only control the small stuff. Whether the salad has mayo based dressing or vinegar based dressing. Yea, the mayo will taste a little better but do we really want to log the 200 extra calories it brings.
Over and over we make these choices. We can eat whatever we want, but we have to log it in the end. Is it grapes vs. Doritos. Beef filet over salmon filet. Cola or fizzy water with lunch. After a while, different decisions come naturally. For me, its 609 days and 61 pounds lost. Feels just right.7 -
88% chocolove is amazing. The endangered species chocolate is like velvet. I’m satisfied with a much smaller amount vs something like m&m’s
Often throw water in a pan in lieu of some oil for that very reason ^^ (plus I think it’s 14g, not 15, per tbsp —since we’re paying attention to details )1 -
Logging just reminds me how much protein I’m not eating (triathlete, high carbs, fueling long workouts, etc). Even on my good days I feel like I’m failing a little.1

@goatg those ES chocolates are truly yummy - I get em when they are on sale only tho. I also found there srirulina carob seed nuggets (bulk) - odd but good. It’s really cool how dark chocolate and these curb the craving and you only need one piece and then done. -perhaps because there is less sugar. AND I’m right there on the protein too!
@wilson10102018 ! Yes ! The little things - they add up - especially the super tasty ones. Finding better replacements is a chore. Starting to eat out of my comfort zone w/ experimental Foods & combos. !
** sprouted grain bread is so much more balanced macros-wise than just regular bread. And it is much more filling and nutritious. Loving it!

Not really an ephinanee.. but more of a "it's amazing how much we ignore".. because as a previous 2 year food logger, you end up with a general sense of what's likely gonna be calorie dense and obvious.
Obviously, egg rolls, from chinese food, is an obvious one. At almost 200 calories before being deep fried lol.. it's not gonna surprise anyone.
Fast forward.. 3 years into my binge eating and regaining my weight back.. every 5th thursday at my job (which I worked for, for 2 of those 3 years) is chinese food night. Eggs rolls were baked but the pan was sprayed with cooking spray, and I would probably eat about a dozen while working, then at the end of the night, whatever was left in the bucket, I would take home, usually there was about 20 or so in there.
Then I would go home... and eat those egg rolls like someone sitting and eating a bag of chips.
So.. upon my return to work 3 weeks ago, as I've only just started to lose the weight I gained about 2 months or so now, I knew that while I would have no problems, passing on most things lol, the egg rolls, i knew I'd want.
So out of curiosity I found them and scanned them in, for future preparation for my calories for that day. Got curious to see just how many calories I was just mindlessly eating and ignoring even tho I knew better.. lol..
190 x 32 = 6080 calories... and that doesnt include the rice, chicken and sandwiches I also would of ate that day, plus any treats from the vending machine or just random ones floating about the facility. And knowing me, I probably didnt stop eating after those egg rolls.
My diabetes was coma level, 4 to 7 is normal blood sugar levels, i was sitting at 34 and eating probably over 1000g carbs..
It was more shocking that rather then get help for my eating disorder, I just ignored it all and put my body through that.

Mac and Cheese was my eye opener (GF if that makes any difference?). I ate a meager serving, logged it after the fact, then was mad because it wasn’t even all that good0

I love mac and cheese...and I can eat way too much of it. Lately I've been cooking a bag of of frozen broccoli (100 cals in the whole bag with 12 grams of fiber), draining off the water, then melting two deluxe American cheese slices on top. Total cals = 240 calories. While not as good as real mac and cheese, it satisfies the craving and leaves me full.
