From all that I've read, the best is the one that straps to your chest.0

Seems most people like the chest strap, I personally did not
I have the gaiam wrist watch (best buy about 80 dollars) I love it
I have compared it to my friends chest strap and it was within
3 calories of mine, much easier to use as well0 -
I use the Polar FT7 with chest strap. Seems to be dead on. $109 from Scheels.0

I use one with a chest strap. I went with a less expensive model... a Timex somewhere around $30.00. It gives me my average heart rate and then I use that to figure out how many calories I've burned. I have the equation saved in a spread sheet so all I need to do is enter the amount of time I worked out and my avg heart rate and it does the work for me. It was a less expensive alternative to a fancier hrm and I'm happy with it.0

I don't have anything to add regarding HRM's, just wanted to say I hope you like the 30-Day Shred. It was the first workout DVD I bought. It kicked my butt!0

I just bought a Suunto M2 Heart rate monitor like... last week? I love it! Turns out I've been over-estimating my calories burned for months now, no wonder my weight loss slowed so much! It does have a chest strap, but I honestly don't even notice it. I just tuck it up under my bra and away I go. It was expensive though, I got it for $140 from SportChek. I'm sure you can get it cheaper somewhere else, but it was a last minute decision to buy it, so I splurged a little! Plus, it's pretty.
I wish I'd used it for when I did the 30 Day Shred! I'm going to re-do it this winter and see what my HRM says0 -
Polar FT4.. Amazon, 63 dollars shipped.
Watch only ones will not be accurate no matter what anyone says.. You need a chest strap for accurate calorie estimation.
I'd also stay away from Timex brand.. the calorie counts are very overestimated on those HRM's.0
