Do you guys find them beneficial?
I will usually go an entire month of almost 100% clean eating and then have a “treat” day.
Does anyone else? It always makes me feel blah.

I save calories for the end of the day for ice cream or dessert. No cheating involved.13

I just eat food, aim for good overall nutrition on average over time, and align my long-term average calorie intake with my weight goals. Some less nutrient-dense but more calorie-dense foods fit in there sometimes, especially now that my weight goal is maintaining rather than losin.
I definitely don't think in terms of cheat meals/days (who or what would I be cheating?), and not especially much in terms of treats meals/day (lots of foods are quite enjoyable, and even most of the ones often considered "treats" make some contribution to nutrition).
For sure, life is too short to eat unenjoyable things just to manage weight . . . and fortunately, that seems quite unnecessary, so I don't have to make those choices. Others' mileage may vary.7 -
Yes, I call it that. But for me, it’s just a meal when I don’t worry about logging accurately, like a pot-luck. I don’t use it as a time to eat all the food. It doesn’t bother me at all, because I don’t overeat a lot or eat things I wouldn’t normally eat.2

I bank calories for a cheat meal every few weeks or run extra hard the next day if I have a ‘lenient’ day.0

For me, absolutely not. Instead of cheat days, I let myself have whatever I want if I REALLY want it. Bag of chips that doesn't fit in my cals? Yes. Going out to eat spur of the moment? Yes. Anything more than 1 "cheat" treat is too much for me. Sends me into a low feeling and then I spend the next day hoping I don't continue the endulgement since it was so enjoyable. I've also really gotten better at taking joy out of overeating lately so most of the time, I'm not craving the cheating at all.1

It took me several times of yo-yoing to realize "cheat days" just don't work for me. I tried "cheat day," "cheat meal" and then a 2,000 calorie day (with the rest being 1200) so that I was getting a treat but it was controlled and counted. None of them worked- after awhile it just lead to overeating every day. The thing that worked for me was setting my goal to lose 1 pound per week so that I can get more calories every day. I no longer feel deprived enough to want a "cheat day." If I want something, I just fit it into my calorie day. If it's a bit higher in calories, I do extra walking and eat the exercise calories back. With doing that I can fit just about anything in a reasonable portion into my regular day.7

No cheat days for me when im on caloric deficit, but when bulking i always treat myself when there is extra calories left 👍0

I manage my calories so that I have one day with a planned higher intake. This allows me to fit in foods that are typically calorie dense, not very filling and not very high in nutrients and still have calories for foods that are more filling and nutrient dense.
I don’t cut out foods or label things good/bad/clean/cheat/etc. but my calorie allowance is not very large and I struggle to fit some of the higher calorie/not very filling/not very nutrient dense foods into my regular allowance without being very hungry. Shuffling a few calories to allow for the higher day gives me day where I can fit them in without being ravenous.2 -
No cheat days. It’s counterproductive to me. I have a treat daily, jus work it into my calorie budget. Lost almost 1/2 of my original body weight doing this.4

Not for me. It doesn't really work for me mentally. I allow myself a little treat every day, but in terms of cheat meals, I suppose I usually make something for the family on a Friday or Saturday where the focus is on something we love rather than a bit healthier! It still has to fit in with my calories for the day, I still log it, I just tende to have a lighter lunch/more exercise, or a combination of those to make it fit. I don't feel that my diet is restrictive enough to need a cheat day.1

You likely feel "blah" because you are travelling in extremes. It has been my experience that a sudden shift in a macro or fiber can make me feel "not well". Much earlier in my weight loss I would go weeks of lowish fat and high fiber and then if I did something like go on vacation it would be unpleasant.
That is when I realized that to make myself more well-rounded I would be better off not allowing my diet to to that extreme.
I suggest that if you want to enjoy your treats without the "blah" to eat more like 80 percent of whatever you think clean is.2 -
No scheduled cheat meals or cheat days for me. They've proven themselves counterproductive to my diet efforts and had to be stopped; I was giving back half my weight loss for minutes of (dubious) pleasure each week. I have some kind of treat every day (without fail) - small piece of chocolate, etc - but I count and log it and make it fit.
Occasionally an unscheduled event comes up, like ending up at Red Lobster and not feeling like doing the salad, grilled shrimp thing, and just going for it - cheese rolls, fried this, unlimited that - and actually I always regret it afterward but still do it LOL But I would never bake that kind of behavior into my diet plan as in "Each week I get to ..." It's more like, "when it happens it happens, because that's part of life."9 -
I don't eat clean and will eat what I want (including treats) almost daily. I also wouldn't call what I do cheat days, but they are planned higher calorie/ refeed days which happen on the weekends. Overall I still stay in a deficit but I allow myself more flexibility those days which helps my adherence and workout performance.3

I eat what I want and work it into my calories. On days where I'm more active, I have more calories to work with. For a special occasion, I plan ahead and 'bank' some calories each day for a few days ahead of when I 'need' the additional.2

Every day is treat day for me. Treats vary.
Yesterday was Sunday. That’s doughnut. I soooooo look forward to getting up Sunday’s and going up to the gourmet doughnut place and drooling over the selection. I went hog wild and got three yesterday. Almost 1500 calories. I spaced them out all day long so I could truly savour them instead of gobbling them down and then wondering where they went. Still ended up under goal for the day, even with soup lunch, a nice smoked pork dinner, and my mandatory chai lattes.
Today’s treat is one of my all time faves: BLTs for lunch. Oh joy!!!!! For some reason we have corn dogs in the freezer. I love them and haven’t had one since I began. So a corn dog and XL helping of air crisper fries are on the dinner menu. Dessert will be a double serving of lemon yogurt pudding with whipped cream, honey lemon sprinkles and some yummy TJ Meyer lemon wafers.
Later this week is Turkish Bride Soup and homemade naan bread, and pork and roasted apples. And probably another round of BLTs.
If you factor food you genuinely enjoy into the process, it makes the whole thing enjoyable and so much easier to fall into new habits.
When I was running around looking for the lowest cal foods and recipes, my head was in such a whirl of confusion I just overlooked the obvious.
Eat what you enjoy, just eat less of it and make simple low cal exchanges wherever possible. (And an air crisper will absolutely rock your world.)6 -
I just eat whatever.
Even the word "treat" kinda bothers me.
Its like the word "cheat" but like its dolled up with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Treat implies this food has some sort of special quality seperating it from other food.. or that it should be something of a reward or once in a while food.
If I wanted to eat a big mac, i dont wanna call it a treat or cheat, cause im just fitting it into my calories like every other food, i dont call salad a treat when i do the same thing with it lol5 -
I eat 1500 calories five days a week, and 1800 two days a week. Or sometimes I have just one day where I go up to 2000 or 2100. But it's all included in my weight loss calculations so it's not really a cheat.0
-
No cheat days. I just fit that *kitten* in. Had a steak and lobster dinner on Saturday, including dessert. A lighter breakfast and lunch, plus my usu walking and voila easily in calories. I plan for when I want more indulgent meals and eat accordingly.2
-
I wouldn't call it a cheat meal. It's more just getting take out versus my healthier home cooked food. Lately, I've been getting a burrito bowl from Moes on Fridays - which isn't bad minus the chips . If I want something sweet I'll just keep dark chocolate around so I don't go crazy holding out on cravings.1
