Hi my daughter is currently 15 years old and is struggling to gain weight, she is 15 years old , 5’3 and 90 pounds which is underweight. She has a small appetite and exercises 5 days a week running track. We tried high fat food, protein shakes, etc. but nothing works. She also hasn’t had her period yet which is concerning. The dietician isn’t really helping. Please help!

I think most people on this forum are going to send you their best wishes and sympathy for a difficult situation. But then point out that this is really not the right forum and we genuinely can’t help you. Firstly this site is for people over 18, and secondly weight issues for teenagers are incredibly complicated and sensitive. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck, and hope you get more support from your dietitian and primary care physician.13

Maybe she has an eating disorder that she keeps from you? Excessive exercise can be a cover up for many people. My daughter is now 18 years old and we have only realised in the past year that she has been having problems.
I urge you to talk openly and honestly, get a full health check and talking therapies underway if this is what she needs.5 -

Are you seeing a doctor with her about her weight and lack of period?
Does her weight bother you or her?3 -
Have you talked about these concerns with her pediatrician?3

For what it's worth, I was the same way (but 4'11 and 80 pounds) at 15 and totally healthy. Not every girl starts her period before 15, it is perfectly normal, especially for an athlete.2
