What is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating based on the traditional cuisine of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. While there is no single definition of the Mediterranean diet, it is typically high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nut and seeds, and olive oil.
The main components of Mediterranean diet include:
Daily consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats
Weekly intake of fish, poultry, beans and eggs
Moderate portions of dairy products
Limited intake of red meat

Perhaps to you but it may teach beginners that have less knowledge on the topic.1 -

Losing weight is about CICO. Any newbie can learn that with a quick perusal of the threads here at MFP.
No special diets or supplements are needed and anyone who tries to push them is frankly, a fool. That said, the OPs post name read as if they had questions which they obviously did not. If they were genuinely trying to be “helpful” there are other areas of the forum that they can post in.5 -

Whole grains is definitely a big part of the Mediterranean diet. And from all the stuff I have read, it's definitely included into the diet.5 -
I had the most success losing weight while I followed more of a Mediterranean diet...
To this day, most days for dinner this is what I'm having... Sometimes with salmon, or shrimp tho 🤷🏽♂️

I’m just going to say this - I’ve never had myself mentioned in a paragraph that always used the word lurve...it felt good - felt really good!

Yep, and quite a lot of it in various local forms in the 8 or 9 Med countries I've visited and also red meat certainly isn't regarded as "bad".
Got a strong suspicion that list wasn't complied by someone who actually lives in the Mediterranean region.10 -

This is an accurate statement4 -
I found it interesting that in the canned speech my Dr (annual physical) gave last year he mentioned this WOE. It wasn't even about losing weight but more about being healthy. Of course he also always mentions smoking and drinking and about that time my eyes roll up in my head since I don't drink or smoke and never have. He has a checklist of things he tells all the patients regardless of size shape age sex etc...4

Not sure I grok why there's antagonism to the Meditteranean diet. Looks healthy and sensible. I've always wanted to give it a shot as a long term WOE, but every time I do, I end up quickly going back to my rib eyes and cheddar BLTs.2

Yep, same here. My doc gives me a printout full of info about it every physical I have, even though she said she doesn't think I need to lose a whole lot more weight and my numbers are decent.
Not that I'm against it or anything...I actually think this WOE is the closest thing I'd ever choose to an actual diet plan.1 -

I'm not seeing antagonism to the Med diet in this thread. I'm seeing disagreement with some false claims about what people in the Med regions (a very large area) eat, plus dislike of trying to advertise on MFP.
I like the Med approach to eating, as usually understood.7 -
The so-called Mediterranean diet is an invention. In fact, people around the Mediterranean sea eat very, very different diets... I'm Spanish, and Spanish food has very little to do with Greek or Egyptian food, just to set an example.5

It’s a little bit response to the odd tone of the post and also to the “this one diet” idea.2 -
I didn’t see any red wine in the graphic - just sayin ☺️☺️ What’s a Mediterranean diet without vino? 🍷8

Nearly. Bread is recommended, and commonly eaten with every meal. Evil white bread even!4 -

I think it's more skepticism about the inflated claims for it or the somewhat arbitrary food groupings that don't really reflect how people actually eat in the region.3 -

Historically, though, it was fermented or sour dough. Traditional, minimally processed whole grains too. Not processed white bread. Big difference. The white bread you get now could sit on a shelf for two years and not mold. That's not bread.
The American idea of the Mediterranean Diet is what's wrong. Many think it's the spaghetti or pizza diet.
For instance, nearly all the cheeses in the Mediterranean Diet, historically at least, were goat and sheep cheese, now cow dairy and eaten in somewhat moderation. Meat was eaten in moderation just because it was expensive and rare. Fish was more ample and in higher supply.4 -
Two year old bread, never seen it.3
-
"The American idea of the Mediterranean Diet is what's wrong"
I'd agree with that!
The false starting point is that there is one Mediterranean diet - completely wrong as there are many.
There are some common threads - people living by the sea do tend to eat more fish than those that don't!
Olive oil is used more frequently where olive trees grow....
The idea presented earlier in this thread of good and bad foods is completely wrong-headed, regional diets start from inclusion of local produce and not exclusion.
Some countries have a lot of similarities. Greek & Turkish cuisine for example, you could also group a few North African countries with a different set of similarities but there's a lot of big differences too as you travel around a very diverse region.
Sourdough bread for example hasn't been the predominant method of leavening bread for 100+ years and a lot of Mediterranean countries also eat a lot of unleavened bread.
It's a bit sad that the diet industry is busy convincing people that a healthy diet has to be in some way exotic.

I don't think that's true at all, anymore. I can't imagine anyone I know claiming that's what eating the med diet is, but for as a joke.
I do think the "Med Diet" as usually used in the US is only somewhat like how people really eat (or historically ate) in the region and also that one cannot generalize about how people eat there since it is such a diverse region.
I would also argue that just because something is not traditionally consumed in the mediterranean doesn't mean it makes sense for an American who wants to be healthy to avoid it. I just ate half an avocado with my lunch. That would not be mediterranean, but it is the kind of food that fits with the general foods eaten on that diet.7
