Hello all,
I am coming to you for suggestions. I have had a life long problem with constipation. Before you say see a doctor I have. We have tried several things including a high fiber diet 35-40 grams a day which I have been hitting almost everyday.I also take 17g of miralax a day. I eat lots of veggies, used flax seed in a variety of foods and nothing seems to help. I go at best once a week and even then it is a small amount. My doctor wants to start me on a prescription drug called Amitiza. I really dont want to take a medication so I am seeking advice from you all. Any other suggestions I havent mentioned.

Thanks in advance! Sorry for the TMI

Too much fibre can constipate you as much as too little can, I experienced this when I was drinking benefibre while on a low carb diet, I ditched the benefibre and everything went back to normal.

It might be a case of just not worrying about it for a while? Drink lots of water, eat veg and... hope for the best! If nothing happens, give the meds a go.
  • I have the same problem.. haven't found anything that works for the long run but if you drink Epson Salt it will get you going!!

    good luck... :)

Double your water. Double your fruit.
  • I have a son who is special needs and has suffered from constipation for years finally the dr's suggested citracal i think that is how you spell it, its orange powder you add to water and that finally did the trick. good luck
  • Probiotics and Water! I have had the same problem for so long. Also when I don't eat dairy or gluten products I go regularly:).

    Great on the Fiber ;-)

Also you can use the Label "Calm" it's Magnesium. Take it at night and it will help you, and drink lemon water in the morning and maybe a pinch of salt too if you don't consume enough:).

The citracal reminded me of this too.

Try a naturalpath....my son had a bowel condition that caused his colon to stretch due to severe constipation....and a naturalpath finally helped - after years of seeing doctors, specialists and doing everything possible.

I have the same issue, just not quite as bad as he did, but at least over the counter fiber supplements, along with a high fiber diet, usually work for me.

    Good luck!
  • Milk of Magnesia... I work in healthcare and that's one of the things we give to our residents to get them going.. along with prune juice... they're both inexpensive so I suggest giving those a try
  • i have the same exact problem.. unless i take a laxative i don't go. i had a friend recently tell me drinking dill pickle juice will make you go. i have tried Amitiza and it worked for me.. made my stomach a little yucky but it works. however my insurance won't cover it so i had to quit taking it. i am back to stool softners everyday and ss with laxative every few days.

I used to have this problem. I had a colonic irrigation & things have got better!
  • you poor thing! I have had a life long struggle too. The best I've ever felt was when I was eating about 70% raw and was doing yoga regularly. Never underestimate the power of some of those stretches! Also, when I eat a heavy carb diet, I am in really bad shape. I do best with lots of fruits and veggies (mostly raw), lean protein, six small meals a day, tons of water, lots of stretching and exercise, and a little fat--avocados work best for me. I would also suggest (if you haven't already) that you build up to the high amount of fiber. Too much too fast can really plug one up! good luck!

is it just that you don't do much or is it that you suffer the typical symptoms of constipation (dry hard crumbly Sorry TMI!)

I think your Dr should be looking at the possible causes not just treating it so do ask for further investigation to rule out any nasties but in the meantime...prunes, prune juice, pysillium husk (have them all together ONLY if you have immediate unimpeded access to a loo!)

Drinking a large mug of hot water first thing in the morning before you eat is a natural stimulant to make you poop. I also take a probiotic capsule every day and my dr advised two citracel every day also.

I was never one for the herbal remedies, but there is a tea called Smooth Move... it is magic! It's the best thing for me to go!

Unfortunately my son has inherited my jeans. Although he has an actual medical condition called Hirschsprungs. He was born with out the muscles to feel the BM. He has had two surgeries and will be on miralax or something similar for the rest of his life. He is only 3.

I don't generally have any problems with being constipated, but when I do, I find exercise helps a lot. Running in particular. Just don't run too far away from home! LOL
  • Maybe drinking lots of water, eating lots of fruit, and mayvbe cutting back on things that make you constipated, like cheese. However, I would try it for a bit, but if it doesn't work, you should definetely express your concerns to your doctor and find the best solution. I am sure there are some more natural ways you could discuss with him.

You should try Trim - Maxx herbal tea. It's very good. Works for me. It's advertised as a weight lost tea but it's really for constipation. I drink it every time around 9:30 pm and I'm ready to go around 7:30 - 8:00 am. I've gotten so addicted to this tea that I see it as my nightly treat. It's sold at Vitamin World or online.

Greek yogurt is what does the trick for me.

The probiotics in it help keep things moving a long at a nice pace.

no we don't poop and we don't fart, in public. My husband always asks #1. Why on earth would you hold a fart in? and #2 How on earth do you hold a fart in without EXPLODING? lol
  • Try Fiber Choice chewables.
  • I use to go couple times a week. SInce I started on Shakeology over 2 years ago, I noticed the first week that it worked with this... I started going everyday. sometimes twice a day. Now, 2 years later.... still regular... sometimes 3 x's a day.

Have you tried Senna tea? Its natural and may help. Ditto on the probiotics. Keeping all the good bugs in the gut really helps with regularity.
