This Hubble Space Telescope image shows a bright supernova in a prominent arm of a large spiral galaxy called NGC 2525.
The supernova, visible on the left side of the galaxy, occurred when a white dwarf — itself the superdense remnant of a dead star — fed on the gas of its companion star until it couldn't anymore, and exploded.
