This was not a triumph of willpower. I always had that. This was the result of finally being believed by a doctor who didn’t automatically assume I was dishonest or self-deceived about my lifestyle. I had already been an active, health-conscious vegan for years. This happened with very minor changes, carefully tailored to treat a specific medical diagnosis that was discovered when I was sent to a specialist for testing. This is why we need to end the stigma and help prevent medical discrimination! I spent my entire adult life being blamed and told to just diet by almost every doctor I saw, no matter what I was there to treat, yet in a matter of months, one doctor who actually listened had more of an impact than decades of prejudiced ones who thought I was just being weak-willed.93 -
