When calculating my sugar mine allows me to have like 19 g of sugar a day. When I am eating fruit, should I still keep to the alloted 19grams or its natural sugar so it doesnt matter?

According to my doc, it counts as sugar. Not as bad for you as refined sugar and plenty of fruits have a low GI, but it is sugar.

Sugar matters, but I generally don't freak out if I go over from sugar in oranges and pineapple...as opposed to sugar from something like cake and cookies.

Just be mindful of it and don't go crazy.

This. IMO sugar is sugar. I don't eat a lot of processed foods so most of mine comes from fruit and dairy. But I still try to limit that to about 30g per day.

    This ^^

Sugar is sugar. No kind of sugar is healthier then the other. Eat fruits! They are full of fiber and vitamins :]
  • I just spoke to my doctor and my nutritionist today and both agree; Sugar is sugar.. but the refined sugar is the worst one and the nutritional benefits of the fruit out way anything else ... and I keep losing and I eat a fair amount of fruit

    Yes.

The important question is WHY are you counting sugars?

For example, if it's because you're diabetic, you have to account for all sugars, no matter the source.

If it's because you're counting calories, then a sugar paired with a lot of fiber and less 'other' (like in fruit vs. donuts) is important to know.

The body DOES process certain sugars differently. Sugars are a form of carbohydrates, and there are complex and simple carbs. As a general rule, complex carbs are more nutritious since they contain other nutrients and not a lot of fat. They are broken into glucose fuel and take longer to digest than simple sugars.
  • Yes I am doing it to lose weight! Should I limit myself fruit wise? If so, how many fruits a day and which fruits are "better" fruits?
I am trying to lose weight and eat healthy and Im eating alot of vegetables, proteins and FRUITS! Should I cut back on fruit intake?

It depends on you. (How non-committal am I, huh?)

I think if you're eating lots of fruits and veggies, staying under calories - you will lose weight. From what you described, it doesn't sound like the natural sugars are hurting you... and fruit is SUCH a good choice.

I track my sugar as an FYI. I work to stay under calorie goal... and believe eating as close to nature is beneficial.

Just my humble opinion. It's worked well for me.
  • It is fructose, but I honestly don't bother to count it. I've still lost weight. I am basically careful with eating other sources of sugar
