What’s up with my steps?

I logged over 14,000 steps today. Why is it not adding calories to my daily allowance? It’s logging as negative 21 calories instead. What am I doing wrong? Does exercise really add calories instead of burning them?
I track through my phone and the MyFitnessPal app, if that makes a difference. Sometimes it logs steps as burning calories, but as soon as I close the app the total resets to zero.

If it matters, I have myself listed as sedentary.
Also, it’s now negative 44 instead of 21. I’m adding calories by the minute, it seems.0
