Working out & calorie counting

I am meeting with my new personal trainer today, session #5 with her. I would not be going to the gym today if I didn't have it scheduled. Wondering if anyone else finds this helpful or a waste of money. Also wondering if you use all the calories and eat more the days you work out? My trainer says I should to avoid "starvation mode" and stagnate in weight loss but it seems I lose weight more quickly if I don't. I always assumed starvation mode (body trying to conserve and slowing down metabolism) only happened in extreme situations. Thanks for any input!

  • You shouldn't put your body into starvation mode. It makes you feel icky & your metabolism too! Before I found this group, I was basically starving myself with counting calories because I didn't know how many calories I burned by doing different exercises. Since I've found this, I'm filled with energy! This is coming from a full time mother, full time student, and part time worker. Now that I know how many calories I can acutally consume throughout the day, I'm feeling wonderful!
  • If having a personal trainer make you go then it's worth it. I say some day use the extra cal if you want and some days don't. But that's my opinion....your body will let you know if it does not like what your doing.

Well, you will lose weight faster of course if you don't eat many caloires....BUT, this is supposed to be a process about being healthy. We can all do the "I'll starve myself skinny diet"....but why??

Eat the calories, and be healthy and fit....not hungry and weak. This has got to last a lifetime.

This is not necessarily true. People who are close to their goal weight often find that they have to eat back their exercise calories in order to continue to lose weight. In the early stages, when you have a lot of weight to lose, it doesn't seem to matter nearly as much.

    Hi,
First post! I'm lucky enough to be at my healthy weight but I'm using MFP to help keep track of nutrition.
What I've found so far is that I'm not taking in enough calories to match my daily needs, especially if I do any exercise.
Yesterday I was over 2000 calories under!
Any suggestions? I don't really want to just stuff my face to keep up with my exercising.
I'm a triathlete and do about 9 hours of vigorous exercise per week.

    Thanks, David

Wow. I would make sure you're eating the regular (as opposed to light or low fat) version of everything you eat. Add healthy fats (olive oil, etc.) to every meal. Look into protein powder and have a couple of shakes during the day.

Thanks for the thoughts! I think I agree with Juliapurpletoes (funny name by the way!) that it should be more of a lifestyle change. I got weighed today by my PT and I weigh exactly the same as I did on Tuesday. But I don't want to drop a ton of weight too fast and gain it back because my nutrition intake was unrealistic.

To copa2251, not sure what to tell you, but I read Runner's World a lot and here's an article about nutrition for training for a marathon, which might be similar to your nutrition needs:

Also to Sue you're probably right, that it will start making more of a difference the more weight you lose. Thanks!
