Trying to lose 100 lbs, never been to a gym where do I start?

To lose a 100 lbs is no small task as a matter of fact it is very, very hard. I have dropped roughly 90 in the past eleven months and for me getting prepared mentally for what was coming was the first step. Because it is a rough ride, but worth it. There is a lady over on 'success stories' comment section who posted I think today about losing a 100 lbs with keto+intermittent fasting, I concur. This is the way.
Fixed it.
Calorie deficit and some exercise is the way...9 -
The common factor in any weight loss success, is calorie deficit. That’s it.
How you accomplish this is your choice. Take advice from those you think would work best for you. No one knows you better than yourself.
Exercise is not necessary for weight loss, but is great for overall health.3 -

If this is “the way”, why are you on a site designed to track calories? Answer: because weight loss is EXCLUSIVELY CICO.
How many people lose weight, cutting NOTHING out of their diet, but eat in a calorie deficit? Answer: 100%.
How many people lose weight on Keto if they are not in a calorie deficit? Answer: ZERO %. I am one of those people who ate Keto for 10 years because people like you kept preaching it was the way. It created disordered eating, WEIGHT GAIN, even frequent nightmares. So when you spew your non-science nonsense, I can only imagine how many other peoples lives you are giving false hope to.
I do IF (naturally) and I STILL need to count calories or I WILL GAIN WEIGHT! So no, there is no magical property of IF. It’s a tool.
You are a troll at this point, I’m certain of it. Eat keto all you want, knock yourself out. Just don’t continue to lie to people that don’t know any better.
The word 'KETO' is apparently offensive. Why are you attacking me calling me names for something I didn't say, not very nice is it...you are reading lines that are not there. Who said anything about not having to count calories. I am not giving 'false hope' to anyone, I am saying losing a 100 lbs is no small task and one has to prepare mentally-i know I had to- because it aint easy, am I wrong? I will try not to 'knock myself out' and i never lied to anyone. By the way keto and calorie counting work just fine together, I know because I am doing it. That doesn't mean keto will work for everyone, it is one of many strategies out there, but to completely dismiss it because it didn't work for you is wrong. Why even do it for ten years if it is clearly not the right diet...
Remember, this is an open forum and there are A LOT of lurkers out there that DO NOT post at all and just read remarks. And lots of people are susceptible and desperate to lose weight that they are willing to do just about anything that sounds like it will get results.
Now I'm NOT saying you can't lose on keto. As a trainer I believe there are better plans. I've had several clients lose 80+ to 100+lbs on just a calorie deficit and exercising without having to give up foods they actually enjoy eating. And what person WOULDN'T love to lose weight that way? You know as well as I do there are foods that are totally forbidden from keto plans and if people are going to have a mental fight with it, then it should be mentioned.
As for Ddsb11, she may have on keto for 10 years because that all everyone was saying. Fads work like that. Let's face it, there are millions of dieters out there that have been on "eat clean" only plans, no "junk food" plans, "no dairy" plans, etc. for years and years and lose a little here and regain back and then restart over again and again.
My personal opinion, I've met just a handful of people who've done keto successfully and kept it off for 5 years. And I've been doing this over 35+ years. The most successful people I've seen are people who just DON'T overindulge in their daily eating regimens. Again, there are no sure fire ways since everyone is different, but because of that difference we should be offering as much info as we can so it's easier for them to make a decision on what plan might be right for them.

And that's fine. Explaining why I may be wrong or why you may disagree is one thing, calling me a liar or troll is another. Not that I am offended-Ddsb11 seems to be- just a bit frustrated, I have been called worse, LOL. What else can I say other than my experiences, I am not implying anything, I am saying what worked, yeah maybe 'this is the way' is a bit too much, sounds cool though.8 -

I guess I did it wrong. I lost 100 + pounds eating the same things I always did. simply less of it, counting calories, and a moderate workout schedule.
I must be a miracle and scientific anomaly.
oh, and OP.... i am sure it has been said, but you do not have to go to the gym, or even workout to lose (any amount of) weight. All that is required is a calorie deficit. Learning to properly weigh and log your foods, is all that is needed. Exercise has other additional benefits, that I highly recommend doing it for, but is not needed for weight loss.
I enjoy the elliptical (it did take a little time and when I first started I could BARELY do 10 minutes, and I was dying, but that rapidly changed). And I LOVE swimming. More strength training is on the agenda too, if I can find someone at my gym willing to help teach me proper form so I don't hurt myself. Find the things you ENJOY, and do those. Walking by itself is QUITE beneficial (and free!)8 -
@bubus05 Here’s the thing. People have done this loop with you a lot, and you continue to tell people that keto and IF is the way, when it’s a tool. You even try to explain the “science” which has already been debunked. Why not just say that it’s your preferred eating method, we would support you. The fact you won’t change your verbiage, when you just admitted that CICO is how one loses weight, is what makes me think you are doing it for attention or something. I see now that is not the case. Basically, I don’t understand why you create false illusions for people who are here trying to understand the facts.
You asked why I did Keto for 10 years (Atkins back then), and here’s the reason. I was told, counting calories doesn’t work. That low carb was the way, just like you are saying. And even worse, the demonizing of carbs was backed by the same alternative facts you post. I felt trapped and terrified to eat carbs. Absolutely terrified! I was a dancer for 20 years, so this was my life. I mean, what is the alternative? Eat carbs and explode or eat low carb and gain 3-5 lbs a year forever? So I gradually gained over the years, trying to combat it with exercise, starvation which lead to binges, the whole thing. Deprivation leads many of us to binge and can create disordered eating, even eating disorders. You can’t imagine how shocked I was when I found out, from this community no less, that eating in a deficit was all that was necessary. I started tracking and logging until I quit losing, and was told to weigh my food. Then the scale moved again. I started studying biology, physiology, and nutrition in college as well. And it clicked. It was like I was blind and now I could see! If only I had the knowledge years ago, it would have changed my life mentally and physically.
You’ll find a lot of posts about Keto and no one cares, we just want them to know the facts. But your posts are not about being a fan, it’s about spreading that “it is the way”.12 -

I used to be on alternative lifestyle website where The One True Way-ers were mocked, whatever their flavor of Way. We had much tolerance for ways, just not The One True Way.
You'll get much less pushback here if you frame keto as "a way" rather than coming across as a keto-evangelical.

There's a couple of things to "unpack".
First: It seems obvious, but check out the gyms in your area and see if they fit your needs.
Gyms vary a lot, and you might not feel comfortable going to the one infested by "gym rats" or the one that only seem to cater to triathletes. Do they seem positive and accepting, or do you get a vibe that you're "too big for this gym?" If you are looking for swimming, do they have a pool?
I would encourage asking if there are any staff good at working with people just starting workouts. If you're new to working out, it's easy to use bad form, or overdo reps, or otherwise do things that could end up causing you an injury. If you are heavy, you should likely be starting with water workouts, stationary bikes, or other workouts that are easy on joints. Some trainers are better at this than others.
Actually go there and get a sense if you feel comfortable, it's clean, doing social distancing, etc.
Also, check out costs. If you feel high pressured, it's OK to walk out. Gyms are notorious for having high pressure salespeople, lots of fine print, and hidden costs. (But with COVID they're also dropping prices as well.)
If you have a friend or coworker who has a gym, often there's some sort of free pass that members can use for a free visit.4 -
I've almost lost 200 pounds now. I definitely feel what you're getting at when looking for a gym. It's pretty intimidating. I do CrossFit now, but if I tried it when I started losing weight there's ZERO chance I would have last. It would have been far too intimidating.
I started-out just keeping it simple. I joined a Planet Fitness gym. No frills, no special machines. It was good for me when I started. After I lost some weight and started getting more fit I started taking HIIT classes. You can do these at a YMCA or even a gym that specializes in HIIT classes. The group will add motivation, fun, and more of a challenge than you likely were doing by working-out alone at a generic gym. Where you go from there depends on your goals.
Yes, I agree with many of the other posts... diet is paramount. Exercise is supplementary. Nevertheless, it's definitely a step in the right direction. Start small, get comfortable with working out, and keep challenging yourself as you continue to make progress. You got this!6 -
1 Find a gym 1-2km away.
2 walk there and back. don't go in
3 eat less calories
4 when the walking is easy, find another gym further away

I had a 100 pounds to lose 2 years ago, and I took 2 tours at 2 different gyms and decided I would wait. It may have just have been me , but I felt self conscious at both places because everyone there was very fit or looked like a body builder. So I lost the first 65 pounds diarying all my food, walking and working out to music on you tube at home before I actually went to the gym.
I think gyms are good and many people swear by them. And many people are very successful. And with my luck 6 months after I joined a gym finally , covid hit and the gym closed. So I am back to working out at home. But I am only a little over a half pound away from my 100 pound goal.
The thing that has helped me most is mindful eating and weighing and measuring EVERYTHING. I cut out all sodas and processed food also. Cut my sodium back and increased my proteins and cutback on my carbs.
Now I workout 5 to 6 days a week.
But the key is baby steps and taking it 1 pound and 1 day at a time.
Good luck to you.7 -

Could just start walking as far as you can or until tired. Youd need to get a handle on your diet too so could try to eat more balanced. Just making healthy changes where you feel motivated can help. I've lost over 100 lbs and thats kind of what is needed for change.1
