I have a terrible terrible chest cold ontop of asthma ive done all my medication for the asthma but im still really congested. Im drinking all my fluids and trying to stay rested. Part of me feels like i could do a work out, light work out like walking. Is it ok to exercise when you feel sick?

Ooo, the asthma part scares me for you. If you decide to exercise, take it easy until you're sure you won't have an asthma episode.

This knocked me on my butt- My doctor told me that when I worked out Wed (thinking I could sweat it out) that I made myself worse- Because I left the gym where it was nice and hot and I was all sweaty and walked out into the cold 30 degree weather with open pores (i was covered up when I left too obviously it didn't help)
Now I have missed 2 days a work and I am doped up on medicine and I can't workout trust me I want to but I have no energy a fever and my friends and family yelling at me about cathing pnemonia (sp) So basically all I can do is get rest and ride this horrible wave out-

Yeah, i called the doctor and she said that if its viral to be careful when working out because you can make it worse. that if i feel like doing light housework and or a light walk it will be ok, just nothing heavy (like 30 mins of cardio) Stupid colds putting a damper on my success!!

Now's a great time to work on your flexibility. Go get some Youtube yoga vids or something On Demand. That way you are still improving an aspect of your fitness.

kudos to you for calling your doctor first- Just take it easy you don't want to end up like me.

I have a ridiculous pile of work waiting for me on my desk at work, I can't work out my routine is completely messed up this week I only got 2 workouts in before getting knocked on my butt, Not to mention my housework is slipping through the cracks cause I haven't been able to do anything for 2 days. AHHHH Im too busy to be sick.
Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better so I can hit the gym Saturday and Sunday

    Great idea!

I'm 80/30 when I'm sick. I have had times where I was able to work out normal (80%) and some where I was laid up in bed and unable to move without hurting (20%). Lately with the flu...I'm on that 20! Ugh.

I was sick last week and basically lost 3 days of workout. Luckily I technically didn't gain since my last official weighins, but I was down and then tip toed back into last weeks weight....I did stay in cals, sometimes we have to just take a break on the workouts to our benefit. I would go with the yoga/stretching as mentioned........then your getting a benefit and not sitting on your butt like I did....of course I had a migrain...so I was not a happy camper in whatever I did.

Good luck and hang in there.....hope you feel better soon

  • Hi all, new here....

It would seem to me, a bad idea to try and continue a strict diet regimen, (including exercise) when sick.

Chances are, you aren't going to be eating well anyway. I think at that point, it would be more beneficial, to concentrate on getting well. I wouldn't be worried with caloric intake, as much as loss of vital nutrients. I'm no doctor, but it does seem to me, that if your system is down, your diet aides would not be working properly. Most likely, the only weight you will gain is water weight, and that is easily lost. I would say pamper yourself, get well, and then resume your activities. jmo, hope you feel better soon! :flowerforyou:
