im wondering what you can mix with rice as a main meal to make it taste nice?
sometimes i make a curry rice with onions, sultanas and curry sauce
other times i have kimchi fried rice which is a korean food, basically just fermented cabbage
im wanting more options but peppers, tomatoes (apart from peeled, chopped canned ones) olives and mushrooms are off the list for me
meat wise i wouldnt mind adding a little tuna or chicken but the less calories the better !
im also not a particularly amazing cook so i dont want anything extravagent just quick and simple to make up~
any suggestions?

soy sauce
black/red beans
whip up some risotto which is super tasty0 -
 I find when I add meat to rice it makes me it eat more rice. I just add different seasoning to it to make it taste better and leave it as a side dish. Chili powder if I'm having something spicy and sometimes add beans. Sauteed with egg whites in a little canola oil and low sodium soy sauce as a side with pork or chicken. Or cook it in low sodium chicken broth for everything else.0

great ideas !
i love hot stuff, beans are yummy, and ive never had risotto but i'm googling it now and it sounds perfect

Use fat free chicken/beef broth instead of water. Or use boulion cubes0
-
peas, chopped scallions, soy or teriyaki sauce, sauteed onions, spinach. chopped up crystallized ginger pieces.0
-
Use broth instead of water for extra flavor and seasonings to add extra flavor.
Can you eat squash? It's easy to cook and toss with rice.0 -
chicken broth
rice vinegar
soy sauce0 -
sometimes I sautee some onions and garlic then add rice and chicken broth, when it's done cooking I add drained black beans, some cumin and cayenne pepper, easy and yummy0

Stuff in rice? My Japanese aunt would poke you in the eye with a chop stick.
maybe that was to harsh. you can really put whatever on the rice. and there are always beans that can go in them too.0 -
Sriracha makes everything better0

Try these:
garbanzo beans, lemon juice, feta cheese & dill (together)
toasted slivered almonds
black beans and chilli powder or cumin and scallions
sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and black olives (together)0 -
LOVE LOVE LOVE rice and stewed tomatoes!0

Sack it off! Why bother with rice when Quinoa is way nicer and is better for you? Sorry, I know that's no help really, but you shoud try it if you haven't already.0

thanks for all the ideas, will stock up on some beans, sauces, stock and maybe some more veg0 -
haha thats ok. i guess if i had my rice as a side dish it'd be okay plain but eating a whole bowl of it alone for dinner? bleh0

This might sound weird but don't knock it till you try it:
Diced onions and raisins in brown rice.
Seriously. The raisins get all round fat and juicy and almost become grapes again, and the sweetness offsets the onion-ness. My honey says he "hates" rice AND onions and he likes this dish. I pair it with pork chops made in the crock pot with applesauce till they fall apart..0 -

I just had to google sultanas as I never heard that term...
I found this:
the grapes used for raisin production are the Thompson Seedless variety, which dry and darken in the sunlight, producing the common raisin. The same variety of grape, however, treated with sulphur dioxide and heated artificially stays lighter, moister, and plumper, and these are what are sold here as golden raisins or sultanas. Theoretically, sultanas are sweeter and less acid than other raisins.
So it's the same grape treated with sulphur dioxide to make it a sultana/golden raisin? Dang, I liked golden's but that sounds so....chemical...and I like to buy the "cleaner" versions of things so I'll stick with natural sun-dried raisins.....that's disappointing, I thought goldens just started out as lighter grapes...0 -
I LOVE making rice with soy sauce or tomatoes and putting shredded chicken (preferably from a cooked whole chicken) and black beans. It's so yummy if you let the chicken simmer in taco seasoning with a little bit of water!0

Take a few minutes at the ethnic foods section at the grocery store. Check out some of the bottled sauces. My guy loves the Thai stuff...spicy peanut sauces, curry, sweet & sour, etc. A little goes a long way too! Just a teaspoon of the peanut sauce works for me mixed with rice, vegies and shrimp/chicken. I also put a dribble of imitation butter flavor or tobasco sauce in the water when I cook rice.0

mushrooms, carrots, peas, scrambles egg. Make your own "fried" rice. Peanuts, cashews, chickem, golden raisins....0

i did consider all the nice jars of sauces you can buy, but the trouble is that like you said, you only need a little bit and because i'd only be cooking for myself, i dont know how long a sauce is good for once its been opened and i tend to chuck old half-full jars away so its a waste.. wish they did smaller containers of them.
then again im too lazy to make my own sauces hah
bought some little prawns today so i reckon that'll be my first experiment0 -
Rotel tomatoes0
-
Ground turkey (low fat) and rice is very good. Add low fat cheese and/or tomatoes/tomato sauce if you like.0
-
siracha/hot sauce
soy sauce
black/red beans
whip up some risotto which is super tasty
Im addicted to siracha sauce!! So good. Nice way to spice up chicken too0
