How do you beat stress?

I work at a doctors' office and have quite a great deal of responsibility in my job. Some days (like today) I get so stressed about having to do so many things at once and, heaven forbid, I make a mistake and ruin a doctor's schedule. In the past, I would tell myself at the end of the day "I deserve to eat junk food! I worked really hard today!" and then I'd just buy the worst fast food or some other kind of junk food.

How do you all cope with stress without gorging yourself on comfort food?

Yeah... Beyond exercise, I'm finding violence against a punching bag is a huge help

Exercise and video games (Nintendo DS and my smartphone are portable).
Yes I also used to do junk food and alcohol. Now I don't have enough of either to be a true comfort.

I wish I was awesome enough to say "exercise" but I am not quite there yet...

I have a hobby that I LOVE and I make it a priority in my life. (see pic) That helps me manage my stress... balancing making other people happy with making ME happy.

Agree with both the above replies plus, eating the junk food, tends to make us feel heavy and lethargic afterwards so you do not even get to enjoy the rest of the day except collapse. After some exercise I bet some energy will come back and everything will be a bit brighter and happier. Be well.

I work out. Really intense workouts with a long walk to cool down. It's almost miraculous how it helps. Good luck!
    Blessings! :flowerforyou:

thats kind of a personal question, isnt it?
  • I have a little chat with myself when stressed. I could easily go and grab some junk food and squelch my inner angst with sugar, starchy carbs, and preservatives while having those fleeting minutes of euphoria as the sugar hits my bloodstream...BUT, if I WAIT and truly think about it... WHY ADD TO THE STRESS WITH CONTINUALLY BERATING MY BODY WITH FOOD THAT IS GARBAGE? (LOL, I scream that to myself). It's literally like walking on a hill of shale -- workout hard, eat healthy and climb that hill, or, let stress conquer that hard work and slide back down to have to start all over again. Next time when you feel stress, be kind to yourself and nourish your body with healthy snacks, or simply go for a walk, phone a friend, write down your thoughts. Soon you'll be kicking stress's butt to the curb!! :0)

used to be drinking..now I can say it lifting..not walling, not cardio, not crunches..but serious pushing iron. and if really bad there is a heavy bag at my gym. But I need to get one at home for those times I cant wait for the gym cause my steering wheel already has a short in it from me pounding it...

Truth be told... I have a good cry and then beat the hell out of a workout... Then a yummy protein shake afterwards! Heavenly!
  • I pack a ton of healthy snacks in a lunch bag
    I go to the gym (before/after school/work)
    I do deep breathing
I go for a short walk
I find other ways to reward myself (ie. a magazine, a pack of yummy chewing gum, a new lip gloss)
I use MFP on my mobile device ;)
    I vent to a friend
I take a bathroom break and take my time, wash my hands thoroughly, brush my hair, reapply makeup (it's like a little time out)

I beat it by tenderizing meat. With vigor. Then I marinate it, prepare it to perfection and serve it like a champ. Relieves all kind of stress.
  • I listen to CDs geared to be relaxing. The ones I have are called: "Peace and Quiet.", "Sleep", "Niagra Waters" ect.... You can put them on your ipod and listen to them at anytime of the day without people knowing. My doctor suggested that I do this at least 3 times a day when I was really stressed out.

Now I just listen when I go to bed and I fall a sleep before it's over. Hmmmmm.

You can get them for about 10$-15$ at the local drug store like Shopper's Drug Mart, sometimes you find them at candle shops or popular music stores like HMV.

It's the best investment I've ever made on myself.
