Wrong Attitudes

A lot of people (not necessarily people using MFP) have the wrong attitude concerning health and weight-loss.
1. Healthy weight-loss is not a quick process, but rather, a lifestyle-change. It takes dedication and effort. Quick-fixes like the ever-so-popular HCG won't cut it!
2. Do not freak out if you have to attend a dinner, a family reunion, or a party and happen to overeat. It is not the end of the world.
3. Stop saying "I have no motivation". The more you say it, the more you will reinforce it, and adjust your actions to match your mindset.

Sorry if I come off as harsh, but that's my opinion.

And also about the no motivation xD the majority of us dont care :p no motivation? look at your goals. Still no motivation? Then I give up xD

if you are eating the right prportions adn eating healthy etc. family dinners won't be so bad because you can have the correct portion size of mac and cheese or a little sliver of chesecake or pie.....eating healthy means you train your thinking on what is appropriate or not, what 1/3 cup of mac and cheese gonna do to you?
  • If one has no motivation than what are they doing here?
There are days I'm stuck in a rut but reading others' comments gets me going.

I couldn't agree more. I work with a lady who asked me about my weight loss "program" and when I told her about the website, she seemed really interested - but later I found out, she started using some diet pills - but that only lasted a week and she was back in the same boat again. That's the thing about "fad" diets . . they don't work because in order to lose weight and keep it off (and be healthy, ultimately) you have to change your whole LIFESTYLE.

Sorry . . I'll get off my soap box now. LOL
  • i love the point you made about lifestyle change. I used to think a diet was a temporary thing I would only need to do for a short time and then I could magically go back to normal. It's a lot easier to think of it as a lifestyle change because at least when I make a bad decision with food I didn't RUIN my diet, causing me to completely stop trying altogether. I realize now I just need to eat less/better and work out more, and eventually it will be "normal" for me to do just that.

Amen!! I honestly agree it is a lifestyle change and my attitude that I must change and just do it!!
    Thank you for sharing!!
  • Amen! I have been doing this for 5 months and have lost 22 lbs. Why? Because I am changing my life, not looking for a quick fix. Some acquaintaces (or a few people I don't know well but see about twice a week in passing) are losing a lot of weight fast doing ideal protein (low carb with lots of veggies and special foods through a program - you can google it). While I say good for them, I know I could never possibly sustain that! I need to eat a cookie once in a while  I will say though, two woman of these women have lost a ton of weight and look fabulous, But it's not for me. I want to lose it slowly and keep it off. I want to eat better now and in the future and live a long time.

I completely agree and have been saying the same things over and over. I especially agree with not freaking out over parties and meals out. I feel that you should live your life while losing weight the way you'll live it when you've reached your goal. That means indulging now and then at parties, family dinners out, pizza parties at work, etc. One meal now and then won't hurt you, even if it's once a week. When I was losing weight (I'm pregnant now) I had one or two days every single week where I wouldn't track my foods. I'm sure I went over on calories but guess what? It didn't matter. I was still burning fat! I have a very relaxed approach and my main goal is getting healthy, not being a specific weight or size.

"Just do it" is probably one of the best advices someone can give. You need a starting point to develop a healthy lifestyle, it's not going to happen overnight.

I needed to read this post today. I started mfp at the start of August and did well. I lost 7 pounds for the month, but I have not lost any so far in Sept. I was getting discouraged. Reading this post I realize that I have made a change in the way I eat. This is not a diet, and I am not going to lose a ton of weight fast just to gain it back. I am eating healthier and feeling better every day. I am not going back to my old eating habits and wonder what happened? Thanks so much for motivating me!!!

I also have to throw in:

-Don't judge others when you know NOTHING about their life.
  • I dont really think anyone could of motivated me. It took hitting rock bottom for me to do it. I have lost 70lbs in 11 months including an unexpected surgery(Gall stones) which put things on hold for exercise (anyway). I really felt I would die if I didnt do something NOW. So I did.

we can't be perfect all the time, we are human and have weakness' and emotions that influence all we do. If you have a bad day chaulk it up to that and pick yourself up and try again tomorrow.

    Agreed!

I keep saying it isn't about motivation - it's about commitment. Motivation is fleeting at best. Make the commitment to do it. Period.

    Amen girl!

People need to realize that this is life.. and in life there are no short cuts. You can't just magically take a pill and lose all the weight overnight.. it takes time, and hard work and eating things you don't want to but know you have to. It's about trying new things and figuring out what works for you and what doesn't.

As far as family dinners/nights out/etc, it's ok people.. one night of bad eating won't kill you.. I promise!
I see so many posts that are like plan a cheat night and only plan it once a week or w/e.. and I'm sorry, but I'm not giving up my life just because I'm trying to eat better and lose weight. I fully plan on enjoying every last bit of food life has to offer.. even if it's not whats best for me.

i especially agree with #1. when i first started my new health & fitness regime, i was determined NOT to allow my weight to bother me. after about a month, i hadn't lost much and was frustrated. but then i looked at my choices and realized that 5/6 days a week at the gym + all the healthy eating i was doing was worth far more than a low number on the scale. i feel incredible and after NEVER having gone to the gym in my life, i now LOVE IT! i also feel GREAT when i make healthy choices for meals for myself and my family instead of going to fast-food or sugary sweet alternatives. i lived my life for 40 years in such an unhealthy way so i can't expect to undo all that damage overnight. baby steps!!! thanks for the encouragement.
  • Agree especially on freaking out at dinners or family gatherings. I love to eat, even when I'm in the weight loss process & even more that I love going to parties & reunions dressing myself up to show everyone, especially those who give me nasty comments on my weight before, my rocking lean body. You don't have to sacrifice your social life just because of your weight. The best ways to avoid pigging out at parties or dinners are: to eat a piece of fruit before leaving the house, drink plenty of water prior to eating, eat slowly and indulge in conversations. In that way, you will feel full easily plus you enjoy the company of other people.

Yeah, if someone insists on being negative, there's not much we can do to help.

Adore this! The funniest part of my weight loss so far is how everyone thinks I HAVE lost so much so quickly, even though I have really only been averaging 4 pounds or less per month!
