YES! what you eat before depends on when you work out. i work out in the morning so my breakfast goes somthing like...
fiber one cereal w/ milk and a serving of fruit
or
2 eggs, toast, fruit, glass of milk
you want a decent amount of carbs and deff a serving of fruit. the sugar will increase your energy levels along with a small dose of electrolytes in some fruits. try to eat 30-45min before0 -
Yep, cereal and a piece of fruit. Afterwards a couple eggs and a cup of coffee (protein intake and stimulant to boost the metabolism)0
-
I feel sick if I try to eat a meal before my workout. I always try to work out first thing in the morning. I will eat half a banana if I am starving when I get up.0
-
It depends on how long and how hard you are exercising and what suits your body and your lifestyle.
If I'm going to exercise for 30 - 45 mins I don't bother eating anything (I'm not prepared to get up 1/2 an hour earlier!) but before long runs or another big workout I have toast or an english muffin with peanut butter and banana.
Make sure you drink plenty of water before and after (and during if it is a long workout) even if you don't eat.0 -

most people have heard this but dont know why... i glass of chocolate milk (surprisingly from whole milke) is EXTREMELY good for you after you work out. if you look at the nutrition facts there 27g carbs and 9g protein. the 3:1 ratio allows restoration of ATP and aids your muscles with energy to actually absorb, digest and rebuild from the the protein. also the thinkness from the fat creates a mucus coating over your stomach (that is usually warn down while working out). this gives moisture and protection to your stomach allowing for easier and more sufficient digestion.
(if i worded this wrong or missed anything, and theres anybody who knows more on the chocolate milk subject please elaborate in my new thread.)0 -
okay thanks for all the advice guys!!0
-
i actually have heard that chocolate milk after work outs are good before! i think ill hafta pick some up when i go grocery shopping tomorrow!0
-
A processed sugary beverage that is high in acidicity and mostly processed isn't good for anyone, before or after workout. I am talking about chocolate milk. ATP is replenesed depending on the energy system your using, i am talking about the rate of replenishment. There is not one thing I can think of that "replenishes" ATP. ATP is what fat, carbs, turn in to for energy.
Eating before you workout??? Some read this in "Fitness Magazine?" Magazine's are highly inaccurate. Eating before a workout prevents fat oxidation. If your goal is to burn fat, you shouldn't eat before you workout.
breakfast slows down fat oxidation

Please go do you research.
Milk contains whey protein and BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids) which is beneficial to muscle building and the sugar in milk will help aid restoring glycogen levels and help transport nutrients. Milkfat is not unhealthy either and this will simply not go to your hips.
You can even drink whey protein with milk after a workout, it would not be detrimental.0 -

I did my research. Now please go do yours. I don't speak "broscience" i speak "real science." Let me state it simply, "adult cows don't drink cow milk" Cow milk isn't made for human consumption. Milk has lactose a milk sugar , sugar feeds microforms in the body which produce acidic waste. This acidic waste is what is the cause of disease. Milk is mostly caseins proteins. Milk has a pH balance of 6.4, 7.0 is neutral. Milk is acidic to the body, acid is the cause of disease and illness from common cold to cancer.
My original post was to make a point, just beause something "works" doesn't mean it's good for us. Use common sense, highly processed crap, after a workout??? come on.0 -

You do realise your stomach acid is at a ph of 1 or 2? This would regard your post as irrelevant.0 -

Yes i am aware of that. We're talking about blood pH balance.0 -

.*watches the folks get into slap-fest and gets back to the point of the post.....*
Point is-if you need something to keep you going so you can get the best workout, eat. If you can't exercise right after eating, eat earlier or something small like a piece of fruit and wait a little bit. If you feel you can do your best and not eat before, then that's okay too. You can get into all the technical details of when and what to eat but if you are a long way to goal it's minutia - just get off your feet and exercise. You burn fat all day, not just when you exercise. Creating a total caloric deficit is the key.
*grabs some air-popped popcorn and returns you to the slap-fest*0 -
Oh I'm so confused. Drinking a small amount of choc milk post work out is mighty appealing but surely one could drink plain milk (if they were inclined that way) and source what extra carbs they needed to recover from something other than the delicious but not that good for you sugar in choc milk?! Hypothetically speaking?0
-
Yes i am aware of that. We're talking about blood pH balance.
Even so your kidneys and lungs acts as buffers and keep the ph above 7.2.
So simply by drinking water your kidneys would rid itself from the excess H* ions that is the cause of the acidic ph level and stabilize the ph level in your bloodstream back to 7.2
Thus it is important to drink adequate water not only for hydration purposes but remove "toxins" as well.
So back to topic...YES IT IS SAFE and if it fits your macros you can enjoy your chocolate post workout.0 -

I do get what you're saying, it sounds like to me you're talking about someone who's already balanced. If they're acidic I don't see this happening the way you say. What you're saying seems partially true, but not fully. If it was true fully the blood would stay at 7.365 which is ideal. We both know that's not the case if it was there would be no acidosis.0 -

Please explain why milk would interfere with the balance in the first place?
You do realise by simply breathing the amount of CO2 leaving the lungs leads to a high concentration of CO2 in the blood and this is countered by the kidneys increasing the absorption of basic HCO3- ions as to reaise the ph level. Also due to quick breathing would lead to a low concentration of CO2 in the blood which will be countered by the kidneys decreasing HCO3- reabsorption so as to lower the pH level again. Your body is constantly out of balance and countered to keep the ph level neutral, why would milk simply cause it to go acidic if the kidneys would simply remove the excess H* ions via the bladder?
Milk is healthy in numerous ways, though it might be slightly acidic...it will not be the sole cause of cancer. No research has been done to support this.0 -

i'm very similar. i only work out on my days off, and i like to have a full breakfast pre-work out, digest for an hour, work out, and then have a protein fruit smoothie as my post work out recovery drink.0 -

According to that article you linked, chicken is a "highly acidic" food, like homogenized milk, so should we also stay away from chicken?0 -
anyways to the OP, it's personal preference on if you want to have something to eat or not0

I am following an alkalarian diet. The diet is 20-30% acidic food. I was consuming 500 calories a day from animal protein.0 -

I did answer it, you just missed it. I didn't answer it directly. If you followed what i said the 25% = 500 calories. This means you can eat 500 calories of chicken, or fish or anything else pretty much. The alklarian diet is 60-70% alklizing food 20-30% acidic foods. If you want you can even do 30% of acidic foods getting in even more protein.0 -
I am responding to the question asked (not getting in the middle of that!) I eat peanut butter on wheat toast before I run.0
-
When I worked out in the mornings, i NEVER ate before, i would do it after, but thats just me....
just make sure your breakfast is a hardy meal, since as we all know, its the most important meal of the day!0 -
About te chocolate milk thing. Anyone who is educated who has common sense will tell you sugar isn't good for you. From tooth decay to CAD(Coronary Heart Disese) sugar is the culrpit. I think most of know that intuitively, some how we tend to ignore it at times. As I said before chocolate milk "would work" as a recovery drink, it would work very well. The issue is, it's not healthy. There are other options out there. Chocolate milk might be the most anabolic drink there is, but that doesn't mean it's good for you. Everyone can think of many drugs that will help them get bigger, run faster, and farther... doesnt mean they're good for us.0

Exactly you didn't answer directly, you left it open for vague interpretation. One may interpre your answer as "it's okay to eat chicken" or "its bad to eat chicken so stick to fish or beef" Anyways, back to your initial post about choco milk, what makes it a bad post workout meal/drink, is it because it has sugar or that it has a low pH?0
