The Wanna Diet

So, I am in my 50's and have gained and lost etc through the years like many of you. Seriously by now you should know what it takes to lose weight and the old mantras of Diet and exercise along with EVERYTHING in moderation holds true. I am now down to the lowest weight I have been at in maybe 33 years. I am 6'2" and now weigh 195. I have been holding steady for a few months now.I feel good and people say I am looking good. And that FEELS good.
I have also found that mindset is everything. Everything. If you just say you want to change, it means nothing unless it is a serious WANNA. I wanted to change, I made it happen. Started with low carb but evolved into caloric intake and everyday activity and exercise ( I am a rowing maniac).
If you don't have the WANNA. You can't get there. Get your mind right and the body will follow.
I can add to this if anyone wants to know how to get there.
Have a good day!

Fantastic job! Isn't it amazing how moderation, diet, exercise, oh and NOT GIVING UP works wonders? But it's slow and doesn't sell well so isn't all that fun to advertise. I'm happy for you!
(I dropped 96 pounds so far using the same method and so I know you are right.)9 -
Totally agree, I was in great shape back in 2013 and then with a new job and stress slowly but steadily gained weight. I knew I need to do something but I just "didn't feel like it" and so nothing happened other than a few half starts that immediately fell off the wayside. Fast forward to covid and an additional 10 lbs gain and looking at summer pictures after a beach trip in July and something in my head clicked and I said, "enough is enough, I look like a beached whale". And I got serious and now almost a year later I am almost 50 lbs lighter and in better shape than I was even back in 2013. You have to really want to do it, otherwise, it will not work. Great job on your loss.11

Exactly! Congratulations! If you don't have your head in the game you'll never succeed.
This is exactly what @ninerbuff posted about a few days ago on the Motivation and Support board. For some reason the thread got derailed and didn't get the attention it deserved.
How you succeeded is by having the right mindset and following through. Good job!3 -

Because many people come here searching, not for motivation and support, but for shoulders to cry on and pats on the back for effort.
I know. I was one of them.
It took a total change of attitude to “get it”.8 -
Couldn't agree more with the "WANNA" factor. My "WANNA" factor came in the form of a jarring "trigger moment" . . . specifically May 29, 2018 . . . the day I weighed in at my doctor's office and the scale showed 314 pounds!! It was at THAT moment that my decades of denial caught up with me. I went to the car and sat in the parking lot pounding my steering wheel and committing at that moment that this s**t had to STOP!
I was NOT going to "diet" . . . I needed a FULL and PERMANENT lifestyle change. Hired a nutritionist and strength training coach. Got serious. Did I mention that I started this commitment at age 68? That's a lot of years of denial.
14 months later (Fall 2019) I hit my final goal of 170 pounds!! I have now held at +/- 3 pounds variance since then and to this day. Went from a 55 pant size to a 33 pant size!
My relationship with food has changed dramatically . . . I focus on cooking and eating healthy foods, portion control, conscious meal planning to maintain necessary calorie count and targeted macro percentages. I have NEVER during this entire journey felt deprived . . . . I now feel empowered and self-accountable to make conscious choices and planning ahead to eat "treat" foods that I would like to enjoy from time to time. I have now logged into MFP for 1,111 consecutive days and I can say for me that "knowledge is truly power"!!
Yeah . . . . . you have to REALLY "WANNA" change in order to change. You have to walk the walk and not just talk the talk! Not easy . . . . but SO rewarding!!14 -
OP please add to! I'd love to read more! And wonderful job!!!0

For me, it wasn't just want to but fear. I started last March at 56 y.o. with chronic kidney disease stage 4 and 4 other conditions that if I caught COVID meant I wouldn't recover. But it wasn't just that I wanted to lose weight but I KNEW that I could lose weight. Failure didn't even cross my mind. I am now 57 y.o. still CKD 4 and have lost 80+pounds and still losing weight. Never considered myself disciplined or committed but knew I developed habits easily and took advantage of this trait.9

Wow, some awesome journeys above!
For me its not about setting goals, It's about setting parameters and guidelines. "Goals" are those lofty ideals that can easily be derailed. I need to work within a set of rules of my own making. (With of course some science based facts to help my decision making)
Its Ok to want to be fit, I am pretty sure we all want something close to that. But in my case, If I don't have the day to day awareness of what I need to achieve and what I allow myself to do, then I can never get to that end goal. YES ITS BORING, TEDIOUS, HARD. BUT..... It works.
So yes long term goals are out there... but its the daily grind. And you know I shouldn't call it a grind anymore. It was a grind, and now I like my workouts as it clears my head. And my food choices are so much easier.6
