Who stopped you from eating the same foods the same way while counting calories?
Of COURSE what you eat matters (satiation for the calories) and of course if you continue to make life difficult for you requiring white knuckling will power to you get through the day, this is unsustainable and will eventually fail.
WW seems to have some people overdoing free foods to the point of eliminating deficits and some not eating enough of them and going on to create unsustainably large deficits.
Being willing to adjust to a Goldilocks deficit allows you to keep going (sustainability)... and if you keep going long enough, you win!4 -
I am glad you found something that works well for you. I am using the old ww points and counting calories to make sure I am not undereating. I lost 40 pounds years ago on weight watchers the old ww points system. I think it is great to do MFP with weight watchers.

WW is great if you need to learn to eat better. It steers you towards lean proteins and fruits and vegetables with the free foods system. However, the flip side of that is that it penalizes carbs and sugars by inflating their points. I loved WW and lost weight on it but never understood why things like a slice of bread, or a water ice (slushie), would be so many points. Once I was already eating lean proteins and fruits and vegetables, I wanted a plan that would be more transparent, so MFP really helped me learn about calories without the filter of the point system. For me, after being successful on WW and crediting WW to teach me how to eat, MFP made much more sense because I just wanted the raw data so I could teach myself. To be honest, MFP and calorie counting, not weighted points, has worked for me in the long haul. But I needed WW to get me here, and whatever works for you is great.8

In the past I have done WW and MFP together. For me it worked and I think that the meetings was my "hold me accountable" which is what I needed. Do you and enjoy the journey!

Nothing, really, but it gives me some guardrails. Yes, I know generally what foods are good for my waistline and which aren't but, apparently, I need more help than that or I wouldn't have gained 40 pounds over that last 15 years.5
