Ladies Only, Please....

Okay, ladies. I am majorly in need of any advice/suggestions. I know everyone is a little different during that time of month, but i'm sure there are many ladies out there with the same problem as me. I am always hungry! I mean it starts a week before and lasts all the way through. So basically, I am EXTRA hungry for 2 weeks out of the month. That's half of the month! I mean it's bad enough getting discouraged from feeling bloated when you're trying to lose weight, but on top of that I am always thinking about food during a time i'm really trying to lose weight. Please tell me i'm not alone. LOL. If you're in the same boat as me, how do you deal? Sorry if this is a little too personal for some people, but it's a part of nature, and a problem i've been encountering and would like some help. Any suggestions or advice during these rough times would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Laura

There are times I am a bottomless pit. And its mostly high carb, refind sugar crap too which irritates me. The only thing i have learned is to give in.. but only a bit. If I want a tray of brownies (YUM) I will eat one and split it up.. have some now and some later.. that way i am not depriving, but I am not blowing everything out of the water.

I crave sweets so I just got some Mousse Jell-O, it's only 60 calories. I get the sugar-free and chocolate. It's delicious!
Everyone always told me to watch salt intake, drink water, and when I'm feeling hungry (and know I can't be) to just go for a walk to take my mind off of food.

I have the same problem...when you feel hungry drink a ton of water first and then only eat until you are full. The water will fill up most of your stomach so you wont be eating a large quantity of food.
  • I completely understand where you are coming from... My hunger seems to jump when its that TOM... I just try to eat as healthy as possible... I usually allow myself a treat once or twice but other than that I try to eat almonds for a snack and try to put a bit more protein and fibre in my diet to keep me full longer...

I am exactly the same... i kind of just try and drink more and i find hot water with a slice of lemon helps..also eases cramps if you have them :) if you crave something sweet maybe have some sugar free jelly or snack on dried mango which just tastes like sweets! Good luck!!

I usually get like that and to top matters off, I usually want only junkfood. Mostly hamburgers, pizza, fried food, pretty much anything that's a carb and loaded with calories. You have to fight through it and learn to turn it off. Maybe when you get hungry, drink a bottle of water and go to the gym before you take that bite. Pretty much, keep yourself occupied as to not thing about food and keep yourself from around it.

Walking also reduces cramps so it's like killing two birds with one stone.

I know it sounds silly but everytime its that time of the month (and yes I am always hungry during that time) I make myself drink a glass of water everytime I want to eaaaaat! If I am still clearly hungry then I let myself eat something "healthy". All the water helps with the being bloated problem and I feel much better. Now of course I am totally not perfect. This is coming from a girl that had Arby's yesterday when I wasnt supposed to :(
  • laura you are definitely not alone lol I am the same EXACT way. what I usually do or try to do is stay away from eating out at restaurants. if i am craving pizza, i will make one at home, I used a whole grain tortilla, low fat sauce and cheese, with veggie toppings. that should be filling for you and still keep you from calling and ordering a pizza. I usually try to eat soups around that time of the month and salads to fill up. with me i love carbs around that time of the month so i like to make sandwiches that are low cal and i usually stay away from buying chips. anything i have in my cabinet i want to eat lol. i hope these tips help!

I also drink a lot of water. But you can still snack in a healthy way. Fruits and veggies make a great snack and you can eat quite a bit and it won't quickly eat up your calories for the day.

If it is that bad, maybe you should research and find an appetite suppressant. They do have mild ones on the market that are not full of something that will make your skin crawl. Or you could try eating more protein, it feels you up faster and keeps you fuller longer. Cut carbs down low and wait to eat the carbs with your later meals. That way the carbs won't cause you to crave food through out the day as bad.

    LOL, ahhh this was tame!!

I'm the same way... I could eat my entire refridgerator, and I crave chips and pastas and any carbs like crazy!!

I have started finding low calorie-high volume foods. For example, I've been buying Popchips or this other really good Canadian brand I can't remember the name of... a fraction of the calories than a normal bag of chips and just as satisfying.

Someone posted a recipe on here with some sort of asian noodles that were really low calorie... and bean sprouts added to that (and a little chicken and a bunch of frozen veggies) and it was SUPER low calorie and a massive amount of food.

I also keep those Cadbury thin chocolate bars in the fridge specifically for that time of the month. I don't crave sweets otherwise so they're safe there!

Uhhhmmm... that's all I can think of right now but I look forward to seeing what everyone else suggests!
  • I am the WORST with this...I've been known to go out and buy a bag of Doritos during my time of the month and literally chow down on the entire bag...and of course hide it in the trash so my boyfriend doesn't see it and make fun of me LOLOL...so since I started working on losing weight, the 2 weeks (week before period and week of) have been KILLER. I've managed to combat it by munching on white cheddar rice cakes (only 45 calories each!!), chocolate jello pudding cups, and sometimes if the chocolate craving is really killing me, I'll just drink a cup of hot chocolate. It's not THAT healthy but it's healthier than a candy bar, cookies or a bag of Doritos :)
  • Honestly, I spend a lot of that TOM eating sugar snap peas and wishing they were potato chips or french fries.

The best option is pretty much what's been said - find yourself some satisfying alternatives. Eventually you will automatically reach for the snap peas instead of the potato chips, the bottle of water instead of the can of soda, the low-fat jello pudding instead of the Haagen Dasz. But that's true whether it's the TOM or an ordinary day. ;)

Also...if you're dying for something, just remember to track it, try to observe portion control.

I am the same way, I crave sweets like crazy about a week or so before I start. Like the other posts I drink alot of water and I might give in and eat some chocolate but I do it in moderation. I will also distract myself by doing laundry or something around the house. What really helps my craving for chocolate is the skinny cow truffles, they are sooo good and only have 100 calories. Whats so wierd is that the day that I start I have hardly an appetite at all. All cravings are gone!

I'm the same way but what I do now is keep busy (my flat is usually spotless lol) and drink water. If it all gets to much and I need chocolate I get a small bar or drink some low cal hot chocolate as it seems to kill the cravings

That is why I go to bed early every night!!!! Even if I watch TV in bed I won't let myself get up to eat. Now from the couch.......that I will do.
