running (it's the small things)

So I've been running for the better part of 3 months. I used to run quite a bit, but I've been working my way back up to it. I typically run for about a half hour every day.

Today I had a brief, beautiful window of about three minutes midway through where I really felt that effortless perfect stride. I always think of it as a slight out of body experience. No pain, no heavy breath, and landing just right. Of course, then it all went to hell, but it gives me hope for returning to being a true runner :)

Yes! I had the same thing today! I have never been a runner in my life, but started running in June. Now I can run about 4 miles (I probably could do more, it's just finding the time and mental strength to do so) and do so on a regular basis. It's so crazy how much easier things are for me in everyday life, walking up stairs and hills and I just feel all around SO much healthier. And I did have that crazy running moment today too! I didn't feel a thing, wasn't thinking about a thing. Just felt so great.

Oh, to have that window more often! I'm just starting running and trying to find my perfect stride/pace/landing. I know it'll come, but believe me, I wish for it whenever my legs start killing me halfway through.

I would ask if you were on crack, but I realize that my experience with running is not the same as that of the fleet-footed, experienced, running types. That and I've heard of this "running high," though I just can't wrap my head around the concept. Maybe someday. Glad you found some bliss. I'll just trust that you experienced runners aren't just playing some ongoing inside joke on new runners as a form of cruel hazing when you speak of such things.

I noticed everytime I run, I may get the "running high". If I DO get the "running high" it happens at different points in the run. But once I get it, I don't ever want to stop. If I didn't think about the knee pain that will come later, I'd probably never stop!

This makes me laugh because I honestly don't feel like I am a real runner. When does one begin to feel like they aren't just posers in the running world? As far as runner's high's go... it's not the way I would imagine the legendary "runner's high"... it's more like a brief moment of zen. Is that a runner's high?

Posted to the blog, but here's a great place to share it as well:

I realized I was a RUNNER last November, when I went out for my long run (long at the time was 6 miles). POURING rain and cold here in Seattle at the time. And I ran. And ran. And ran. I splish-sploshed the roads around my home and watched the rain drip-drip off the bill of my cap and felt it run down my back. Grinning like a fool the whole time. People must have thought I was crazy. Still the best run I've ever had.
  • I love running in the rain. When sweat and water becomes undistinguishable is truly awesome.
