Home made baked vegi chips

Any suggestions on how to make them? I've tried several recipes online, olive oil, sliced vegies (parsnips, sweet potatoes... I foget what else) and spices - arrange on a baking sheet and bake, but they never turn out. They either burn to a crisp or come out chewy and bendy, there is never a happy medium. I just can't get it right, but would love to be able to make my own sweet potato chips.

Any tips? Thanks!

The pampered chef has a really cool potato chip maker that you put into the microwave and you can put sweet potatoes on it and they turn on wonderfulllllllllllllllll. only down side is that you can't put other vegetables on it :(
  • Not sure about baking, but I remember reading somewhere that you can season and grill kale to make chips. I'll be interested to see what people come up with!

I'll have to look, but I came across a recipe awhile back for something like this. May be for fries though... I know you had to boil the taters first, then bake. I'll poke around & see if I can find this recipe.

I do thick sweet tater slices in my GF grill. They are delish! Spray with a little Pam then sprinkle with garlic & sea salt, cook for about 10 minutes (depending on how thick your slices are... Yum-O!

I tried it and like you, they were burned or mushy... I have a dehydrator and never thought to use it. I might try it this weekend...

I've sliced potatoes or sweet potatoes - microwaved them first for a bit, then arranged them on a baking sheet and spritzed olive oil on it and sprinkled spices (seasoning salt, garlic) on it and baked it in the oven for 20 min on 250+.
I think the website 'hungry girl' has a recipe for kale. spritz with oil and seasoning and place on baking sheet in oven for 7 minutes.

For those with a dehydrater, do you think it's worth the cost?

My parents had one growing up and it was great. Dried fruit, fruit roll ups, beef jerkey, vegies that you can add to soup to rehydrate later. I'd love to get one again.

I make zucchini chips. I use a food dehydrator...and the key...I think...is they have to be sliced thin thin thin thin thin.....I use a pampered chef ...mandolin (?) and the slices are paper thin. They also have to be uniform in size. I could never slice them with a knife like that.

My chips come out very crispy.... I've never tried to do it in the oven, but I love them dehydrated.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. To the poster that asked if they are worth the cost...YES...I love mine...make jerky, dried fruit and even yogurt in it. I bought an exaclibur...pricier than some that you can find in the stores, but well well worth it.

Also, great to make dried tomatoes, etc, when produce is cheaper.
