I saw someone post a comment a while back saying to use cumin instead of a taco seasoning mix, to save on sodium. Was curious if anyone had a recipe such as this or could just give me an idea as to how cumin would be sufficient. I've never cooked much with cumin so wasn't exactly sure how strong it is in a recipe. I use ground turkey, instead of beef in my tacos. Thanks!

I use ground cumin all the time. I will add it to water before I add it to any meat or rice, though. It has a strong flavor, and you don't need much.0

Sounds intriguing...0

I put it in everything! Rice, beans, seitan....it is the wonder-spice!0

I love using cumin in my taco meat, I also use paprika, onion, oregano, garlic (sometimes I use garlic salt), I am sorry I can't give you a specific recipe...I just kind of sprinkle it in until is "smells" right :laugh:0

OMG...I totally read this wrong! baaahahaha0

I use cumin and chili powder in place of the packaged taco seasoning to save on sodium....I think it tastes great!0

I use the spice ground cumin in anything that I want to have mexican flavor. I use it in guacamole, tacos, and even add it to sour cream for a salad dressing sometimes. Makes the dishes delicious without the salt! I also use garlic powder instead of garlic salt in the same dishes. usually a tablespoon is enough for a pound or two of lean ground beef of turkey.0

how about using low sodium salsa???????0

Totally thought this was going somewhere else.:blushing:0

I always put cumin in tacos. As far as how much to add, I just keep adding to taste. Be careful though, because it can make people sneeze.0

cumin + smoked paprika = perfect for everything0

I always just pour some hot sauce like pace picante add a little cumin and never have to add a bit of salt extra. I never ever use Taco seasoning it tastes bad in comparison.0

My mind took this to a totally different place. :blushing:0

cumin is standard in taco seasoning. Google it and make your own.0

I make my own taco seasoning because the taco packet doesn't taste like tacos at all. It's a taste kind of thing, I don't ever measure. I use:
garlic powder
onion powder
chili powder (be heavy handed with this)
cumin (this is the "taco" flavor, so I use a lot of this)
dried cilantro
chili flakes
pepper
salt to taste
It tastes way better than the packet and you can control the sodium content. I will never buy a packet again. You could also look up a recipe for taco seasoning online and make up a big batch you can store so you don't have to make it every time.0 -
I use Cumin in a lot of stuff...it is quite potent, so be careful. Add a bit at first and then more if need be.
(and the title of this could sooooooooo be taken in an awesome way)
