Glad to be here, but what's up with the amounts in recipe builder?

Hi all!
I just joined on the advice of my dietician. I went to put in the first recipe that I was making myself and when I put in cilantro, it defaults to a pound! No one uses a pound of cilantro unless you are cooking for an army. I had to figure out what portion of a pound a tablespoon is LOL! Anyone else notice this?

Sorry to come in griping. I actually do like the app and it helps to be able to report my progress to my dietician.

There are numerous entries in the database for cilantro. You just need to pick one that better suites your needs. The database is for the most part crowdsourced from users, so you're going to find all kinds of interesting entries, including entries that are completely wrong.

The way I did it, I only saw one choice. But I just found out I can create a food. So I can just make it from nutritional info i found online. These are the steps that led me to one choice:
In Recipes, Meals, and Foods... Create Recipe...Enter Ingredients Manually...After giving it a name and serving size... Bulk Import Ingredients... type cilantro on the line... Next... One choice, choose cilantro... serving size 1 lb... when you click to change, the only choice is i lb. You can change the serving size to make it .1 lb or something like that.

I think I'm just going to create my own foods every time, whether it is a staple or a brand name. I don't want to spend time checking that the entries are accurate.

Thanks for the reply! I'm just having a bit of a learning curve with this app, but I'll get it.

Everything wolfman said, plus a suggestion to measure all of your ingredients by weight in grams rather than cups and spoons.

Some people skip the recipe builder and use the “meal” function instead, you can adjust amounts of individual ingredients and enter 1/4 meal or whatever for leftovers. You can also share a meal with friends/ family who are using the app, but you cannot share recipes.

Another tip, if you’re going to use the recipe builder, is to figure out servings as a standard weight like “per 100gm” or “per ounce” or “per gm” and put that into the name of your recipe. Weigh the final recipe before dishing out servings, and then you can weigh your serving size to be precise. Makes it easier for leftovers or if you’re repeating the recipe in the future. And, if you’re making a favorite recipe that you might change a bit, instead of deleting an ingredient, just change the amount to zero so it’s there waiting for next time and you don’t have to search for it.

For any food, in the recipe builder or the usual diary, click on the amount to see what options are available in terms of “cups,” “ml,” “gm,” “portion,” etc. most entries have multiple options.
