Muggy recovery run on the trail this morning. My calf is still a little tight, but getting better with the TLC over the last couple of days. My left knee is also grumbling a little, but that’s not unusual for me on these longer distance runs. Ice helps a lot then making sure to wear well padded and supportive shoes.
This week is my bonus taper week. I usually build an extra week into my training plans just in case I get sick or injured and have to skip a long run or a whole week. I have never needed to use it but I figured since I have time, I might as well give myself a little cushion. So, shorter runs this week culminating with a 6 miler this weekend. I am camping again so I will do my 6 miles on the trails and the weather is shaping up to be gorgeous!
Congrats on a great race @katharmonic !
@kgirlhart Sounds like you are ready for race day! Good luck!

A rare weekend of no running for me. I probably won’t be meeting my monthly goal, but oh well! I had the Wilderness Survival Class all day on Saturday. I learned so much. A lot was common sense but a lot of good reinforcement, new information and hands-on fire building, making shelter, etc. Yesterday was a beautiful Fall day and with a cold front coming through tonight I decided to get my bike out for perhaps the last ride of the season. I rode over 38 miles on a local rails-to-trails just enjoying the beautiful Fall leaves and the water rushing through the creek that runs alongside the trail. This morning was an uneventful 5 mile run at 5 am.
@kgirlhart – You are going to do great in HM. You have worked your training so hard. Just trust the taper!
@katharmonic – Wow, that was one hilly race but you did great!

Anyway, I felt fine today and did one of my standard 9k routes. The sun was shining but it was chilly. The Fall leaves are just about peaking, which isn't like in Pennsylvania, but it sure is beautiful. I like this time of year.5 -
@quilteryoyo Beautiful pictures. You and your mom look so happy. I will try remember to post a picture of the quilt.. I hope it turns out good. Thanks for the words of encouragement on my race to you and @martaindale and @teresa502. I am at that point of teetering between feeling like I won't be ready and feeling like I'll ace it.

I’m never going to catch up on the thread, but I’ll do my best to read at least. I’m working like 50-55 hours a week, it’s been so crazy. But I’m still managing to get up with the rooster and run LOL
@ereck44 thanks for the horse racing education, that’s really interesting.

Most of Arizona doesn't follow daylight saving time and it is awesome5

No run today. Golf instead. Was the last Monday golf of the season for me. Soon I'll be back to running every day.6
-
Yo! yo! yo! I'm back from my holidays which weren't holidays, more like taking my laptop to a different part of the country and carry one but there you go. How is everyone getting on?
I will have a look through the recent posts and have a good browse at the activities.
Hope you have all been having fun!6 -
Hey there @TheMrWobbly! Great to see you back!
Don't worry about catching up on the thread, nothing ever happens on here 😏🤣😂🤣😂3 -
No run today, but I did take the pups for a walk this evening. I have a busy week of travel and site visits every day, so I hope I sleep better tonight than I have been. I’m going to work on the blanket I’m crocheting tonight. It looks SO pretty, and I hope to have it finished within the week.6
-
Thanks so much everyone for the comments and congrats on my race!
The race photos were posted and there were a lot of them but they mostly looked like various degrees of suffering and awkwardness. This one near the finish I looked happy
No run for me today either. I got my COVID booster shot this morning and by late afternoon was feeling some low-grade crappiness. Nothing horrible as of yet but I'm tired and flushed, and I have the general "might be getting sick" feeling. Heading to bed early to sleep off what is hopefully a fairly mild reaction.5 -
@RunsOnEspresso Yeah for running again. Slow is better than stopped.
Nice running @CarsonSurfs ! If I were an early bird, I'm sure I'd be like you. But, I'm a night owl instead, so like it to be lighter later in the day.
Yeah for a bonus taper week @martaindale ! You're going to do great race day.
@Teresa502 Sounds like a fun weekend and nice run this morning.
@polskagirl01 Glad you felt good on your run today.
Thanks @kgirlhart .
You're doing great @mshawski !
@skippygirlsmom It's hard to keep up when you are working that many hours. It's awesome that you are getting up early and getting your runs in!
Welcome back @TheMrWobbly ! Sorry your holiday wasn't much of a holiday. At least you had a change of scenery.
@marisap2010 Would love to see the completed blanket.
Nice picture @katharmonic ! If you're like me, you were happy to be near the finish line. I hope you feel back to normal in the morning.
I worked in the barley one year old class room today. There were only 2 kids there today, so it was an easy one. And, these weigh a lot less than those I've been with for the last two months. I went to the chiropractor this afternoon. He says my left side is "adjusting" to the changes in my right side, since it's all connected back there. He adjusted both sides today and gave me another exercise to do. I can tell, in general, the back is feeling better, but it isn't normal yet.
When I got home, I did a mile walk on the treadmill and did all of the back exercises. He hasn't cleared me to run yet. I'm hoping he will by the end of this week.7 -
Couch to 5k is going well.
22 minute run this morning. Feels good!
@martaindale That's a great idea to add an extra week to your training plans in case of injuries. Must remember to do that when I get up to training for races again.4 -
I am behind as usual. Just so busy with everything going on here. Have been running and walking when I can. Seems like lots of good running and racing have been going on here.
@katharmonic - great job on your GOAT race. I remember when you ran it previously! All of my race pictures all look like pain and suffering! Yours looks great!
@CarsonSurfs - I also hate day light savings. I just wish they would commit and get rid of it. We actually voted in CA to get rid of it but the federal government has yet to approve it.
Welcome back @TheMrWobbly!
Not sure I will get to my goal of 100 miles but given how busy I have been I am look with it. I will however keep trying. Got out in the rain this morning. It was cold wet and windy but I was generally excited to be able to run in real rain - it has been a while. We got soaked but it was all good!
Some of you may recall that my friend Rachel Bell Kelly is a semi-elite ultra runner and winner of the Cruel Jewel in 2018. She has run Western States twice and silver buckled. Recently she qualified for and ran in the 2021 USTAF 100k Championships, hoping to make the 100k Team. She placed 3rd but missed making the team and didn't hit the time that she felt she could have. Her blog post here is so insightful about running outside your comfort zone and finding success even when you don't hit your expectations. It really hit home for me and I think you all might like it too.

Great picture with your mom @quilteryoyo and at your race finish @katharmonic
@martaindale enjoy the extra taper week! I like to have a week leeway when following a plan, too, but usually try to keep the last 3 weeks of the plan intact (so I have to use the extra week before then). But I haven't really been following any plans to build up to anything for the past year (or 2?); it's been more a matter of maintaining and being ready for whatever race I have next, so I just do what I want and aim for a consistent weekly total most weeks. I wonder if I could go back to following a plan 🤔.3 -

I believe that CA actually voted to KEEP DST all the time. I lived and surfed there for 5 years, up until June of this year. That was a point of contention for me and all my Dawn Patrol buddies.

@Orphia You're doing great. You'll be training for a race in no time.
You are doing great, especially considering all that you have going on @shanaber ! I'll look at the blog post later. It sounds interesting.
Thanks @polskagirl01 .
@Scott6255 You are so consistent, even when you aren't feeling it. WTG!4 -
@shanaber I did read the blog post. It's very insightful. I enjoyed the read and hope I can incorporate some of her insights into my running, when I get back to it.3

I was not feeling it this morning. It was 70°F this morning with 100% humidity and a dew point of 70°. I know I have run in hotter weather, but it just felt gross this morning. The plan called for 5 miles in 48 minutes with a 9:32 pace. I ended up running 5.2 miles in 55 minutes at a 10:36 pace. I felt really good about the run. I wasn't really feeling it when I started out and the first 2 miles were pretty meh. The first mile came in right at an 11:00 pace. So I decided to go for negative splits. I ended up with 11:00, 10:54, 10:46, 10:31, and 10:01. The last .20 was at a 9:31 pace. So I felt really good about it. I felt better and better as I ran and it was definitely a run that even though I was tired and not feeling it in the beginning I was enjoying it by the end and was glad I got out there.

Welcome back @TheMrWobbly!
How's your blanket going @marisap2010? Hopefully you are getting some sleep too.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad you felt improvement after your adjustment and back exercises! Hopefully you'll be back running very soon. That was a very nice pic with your mom. And yes, I'm always extremely happy to see that finish line, even though my pictures rarely show that.
@skippygirlsmom you are doing fantastic with your early morning running. Way ahead of goal. Hope things will settle down for you a little bit.
@kgirlhart I agree - you're ready. The nerves are so normal when you've put so much into it. Good luck! You've got this!
@martaindale enjoy some extra taper. I really believe in an extended taper to really feel fresh. You've put in the work so keep it easy and be ready to go on race day!
@shanaber I read your friend's blog post. So impressive to be able to accomplish that and really insightful thoughts about it. I particularly like her last point "Put your all into what you do, but do not be defined by it." I think this is so important to remember in running and in other parts of life so that not reaching a goal or milestone does not equal failing as a person. I also loved that she said "I could use the time to finish in a way that my soul would be proud of" and being a good person/member of the community and not just focused solely on making or not making her time. Beautiful words to remember.
Good running and commitment to yourselves, everyone.

I felt much better this morning after a good night's sleep. My vaccine arm was sore but otherwise felt good so I went to yoga class. I didn't have time to run before and it was pouring rain out - all day long was 100% chance of rain and that came true - so I took a little extra time for a short run on the treadmill after class to get it done.7 -

4 x tempo miles this morning (target pace - 6:51/ mile). Hit them in 6:49.8, 6:50.5, 6:55.4 and 6:46.1. After really struggling in the third, I was surprised to run the fastest of them all on the fourth. Heart rate did climb a little too high on the first and fourth miles, which I chalk up to not being able to run yesterday because of the heavy rains. My heart rate does tend to climb higher than usual on runs following days off.

I did my run in the evening yesterday, so quite a bit warmer than usual but the humidity had a chance to burn off, which helped so much. Because it was such a short run, I pushed my pace a little. I have been going at basically the same easy pace for months just getting my base built back up. I am not racing my upcoming HM for a PR so I didn't worry too much about speed work. I can tell I am slower than this time last year because of the lack of speed work. I figured a little pace pushing just to stretch those muscles a little would be fine over a couple of miles. It feels good to work in that way after so many months of just battling endurance and heat. I averaged a 9:15 pace which is a solid 1-2 minutes a mile faster than I've been pacing.6 -
I haven’t posted in a bit because I am having lupus problems and it makes me depressed. Still having vasculatis, speckled feet, minor pain and aches, and fatigue. Ran my “long run” Sunday which is only 10k easy and it was really hard, at my slowest pace. From past experience it’s a good idea to do whatever I can do during a flare, if I ease up on exercising I just lose fitness and it doesn’t help the flare. But I am pretty much instantly sick of it.
Tuesday was a little better, ran 5 miles easy trails. We’re supposed to get rain tonight and the next three days, but Tuesday was about as perfect running weather as it could be. Was even dry afterwards!11 -

109.21/111 miles completed for October
My Half Marathon is just 10 days away and the taper has begun. Today the plan was for 3 miles in 26 minutes at HM race pace of 8:43 min/mile. I ran 3.4 miles in 32 minutes at a 9:25 pace which is race pace for me. It's actually a little quicker than race pace and I hit 3.1 miles at 29:14 so I felt really good about the run. It wasn't so hot this morning. We had some storms overnight and the rain was just ending as I was getting up and it was cooler when I finished than when I started. Tomorrow will be a 6 mile run which will be my last long run before the race. I'm starting to get excited. 😊
Thanks @katharmonic! I'm glad you're feeling ok after the booster.
@rheddmobile I hope the flare passes and you feel better soon.
