What's In A Name

So, I'm here at work again as a receptionist at an assisted living home; a weekend gig that is often quite entertaining. The most random thing however is that while on the phone here talking to people who call who have asked my name over the past two years, they very often mistake my saying "Cathleen" for Stephanie. It's the strangest thing, and I don't even know how it happens! It's been at least 15 times... Has anything like this happened to anyone?

My name is Laura...I've been referred to as: Gloria, Bar (I'm assuming short for Barbara), Lori/Laurie or some other variation there of. I think people hear the "a" sound at the end & just sub whatever name they can think of that ends with the same sound...

Once I was at a restaurant where there was a waiting list so they asked my name...I said Alison...so we waited for our table. Then they started called Alvin and no one went up...turns out they thought my name was Alvin

I've repeatedly been called Emily by several different people, even in different states and I have no idea why. I've also been a Jennifer and Jessica. My real name is Jamie.

Constantly. My name's Kristin, and some people call me Kris, which is fine by me. However, I get Kirsten, Christy, Christine, Christian, etc. alllll the time. Even if I correct people they'll go back to a different version of my name most of the time. Also, my last name used to be Long. I would always be like "Long, L-O-N-G" when people had to write my name for something, and people would look at me like I was an idiot for spelling it out; but, when I didn't I would end up with Wong, Jong, Log, etc. all the time.

I feel better getting that off my chest lol

*edit - I should add, I'm horrible with names myself, though. I teach part time and I'm always so nervous I'm mixing up students' names. So, I get it - it's frustrating on the one end, but kinda hard on the other.

My Name is Pam... I get called "Pen" continuously :indifferent:

Best though is when I make dinner reservations on Date night with my husband, and the rest of the night he's "Mr. Newton" See in Quebec we don't change our family name when we marry - something about distinct society BS and traceability.. I still giggle like a schoolgirl though...

LOL. I do that too. "Joy, J-O-Y". Don't give me that look. You would have gotten it wrong if I didn't spell it
  • Thanks for the responses everyone. It's so funny how misunderstood we can be at times haha, especially with something as basic as our NAMES!

My name's Leyna so yeah, I don't think I have met one person that has pronounced it right without help. It's pronounced Lay-na. It's from a Billy Joel song. I am thankful I'm not in school anymore that was just annoying. It got to the point where I didn't care what the teachers called me but my classmates always corrected them. What makes it's even worse- I have a difficult last name too.

:Years ago when I lived in Kansas, the maintenance man for the company I worked for always called me Mary for some reason, even though my name is Betty. I didn't mind though because I like the name Mary so I always answered to it.

My name is AMY. Pretty simple, right? Wrong! While no one has ever really misunderstood me and called me by the wrong name they constantly spell my name incorrectly at Starbucks. And it is not like they spell it AIMEE which is other most common spelling of the name. The usually spell it AMI or AME. WTH? Okay, maybe the first one if you are a French major and wish to signify I am your male friend, but the other one makes no sense to me whatsoever.

You do not even want to know what they do with my husband's name, Aaron. He is lucky if he gets on A on the cup.
  • My name is Tim... Yet, apparently that's difficult to remember or something? I've gotten Jim, Ken, and even KIM! UGH! lol
  • I have a fairly simple common name. I answer phones and of course, say my name. Some how then i say Carrie, they hear Kay. Thank god for name tags.
