Hello I'm new to my fitness pal, I need all the help I can get. I have around 200 lbs to loose so I can be there for my grandsons.

    1) log every single bite or sip that isn't water. Use grams and milileters.

    2) speak to a doctor! You have a lot to lose so some medical supervision, at least initially, is a good idea.

    3) be gentle on yourself. 200lbs isn't going to vanish in 6 months. Make gradual changes you can stick to. You are going to make mistakes, we all are, but that's how you learn. You'll have a bad week, but don't give up, the next one will be a really good week.

    4) get advice from a qualified professional before starting an exercise programme. This links to seeing a doctor, but as you obviously know you have a fair bit of extra weight and this puts a lot of strain on your joints, heart and lungs. Damage caused by too much exercise, or the wrong kind of exercise, will take a long time to heal.

    5) learn to like (or at least tolerate) swimming. It puts a lot less pressure on your joints and works pretty much every muscle, so is typically a good starting point. "getting the clorine out my hair" is also an excellent excuse for a long, hot shower after you leave the pool!

    6) you cannot outrun a bad diet. Exercise helps, sure, but weight loss is more about what you eat. You can lose a significant amount through diet alone.

    7) learn to cook. It's a pain, sure, and the washing up isn't fun but it's easier to switch to lower calorie options if you do it yourself.

    8) talk to us. Some of us are in the same position, others have reached their goal and others are between the two. There is no such thing as a stupid question. There is someone else who is wondering the exact same thing, so ask!

    PS @jd_43

As I type this, my husband and I are on the plane to see our new granddaughter. He hasn’t seen her yet, and is over the moon.

We’ve both lost a considerable amount of weight as seniors. In fact, we realized our three checked bags weighed less than our combined weight loss.

If we can do this, you can do this.you want to be around to enjoy those grand babies. And I don’t mean just hold them. Go to the park! Down on the ground playing with them!

    Hugs!
