May totals: 13/100 miles
3/2: 3.2 miles
3/3: 6.6 miles
3/4: 3.2 miles
30 minute progression run this morning. Managed to see appropriate drop then rise of the pace. I think I got down to 10k pace for a short time (the target peak pace), though it looks like I wasn’t there very long.
My legs felt good this morning, so I think the new shoes will be a nice addition to the rotation for speed days. I wondered if I would feel any stiffness this morning after running in the less cushioned shoe. I think I need to go try on some Asics @Scott6255. You’re not the only person I have had recommend them to me as an alternative to the ghost. I don’t want to completely upend my shoe rotation but adding in some variety could probably benefit me.3 -
Went out a few minutes after 6 this morning and the sky was already getting light with streaks of blue and pink in the East. Temp was in the mid-50s. A perfect morning for running. I got in 5.23 miles. I tried to focus on shorter steps but even though my overall average pace was 45 seconds faster per mile than yesterday, my average cadence was lower.
This sounds absolutely beautiful! I have mile repeats this afternoon... I'll be fine with them, but it's like I have to mentally prepare for them, lol.3 -
4 miles for May the Fourth.
I just read about a family that ran a marathon together. With their 6-year-old kid. I'm not a parent or doctor so I might be out of line but this feels like too much for a little kid? They posted a photo at the halfway point and he looked miserable.2 -

Not a doctor, but I am a parent and I could NEVER get my kid to run a marathon at age 6. 100 yard dash? sure. Around the block? ehh... not likely. A full marathon?! That's nuts. Either that kid has an incredible future in endurance sports... or may need a lot of therapy.3 -

Yeah, a marathon is too much for a kid that age. Guidelines I was able to find generally look like the ones below, with little tweaks in age. These are pretty close to what race organizers will allow as a minimum age of entry for the longer distances at races I have entered (at least the ones where I have noticed age limits posted). I have seen plenty of races that will allow 5 and up for a 5k and 10 and up for a 10k. That seems reasonable depending on your child.

Hi all, long time no see. After a pretty good start to the year I had a bit of a disaster. Fell off a ladder and ended up in hospital. Worst damage was to my face (I bounced off the metal ladder face-first) but I also injured my right thigh quite badly. No breaks but nasty contusions and some stitches, which all left me sore and pretty sad, tbh.
Long story short, today I went for my first run in ages. It was only about 3 or 4km, and I had to do some walking breaks, but it just felt nice to be out there again. I’m sorry I haven’t been here for so long, I was (and still am) struggling mentally with feeling so unfit and out of condition. But I’m still trying, and that’s all I can do for now.
Hope you are all well. I will try and read and catch up on the news over the next couple of days. X9 -
@Faebert So glad to see you back! That fall sounds brutal. You are right, trying is all you can do. Keep it up!2

Yah, I saw similar guidelines when I looked it up. My nephews sometimes join us in 5ks but Mom or Dad always have the stroller if they get tired. The oldest, at 6, sometimes didn't want to walk/run the entire way. I can't imagine making him run a marathon!2 -
@polskagirl01, I agree with the others and would count the hike as a recovery run.
@RunsOnEspresso That is crazy that a kid ran the marathon! You know he probably had no desire to do it and the parents just wanted to make news for having the whole family to do it. You know he had nothing close to marathon training, so it is a miracle he didn't fall out during the race.
@Faebert, I'm sorry to hear about your fall! I know it is tough to get back into it, but you can do it!2 -
My plan had me do 40 minutes in Z1 tonight, so hubby and I went for a walk, because I just can't run slow enough to stay in Z1. 1.56 miles.
I'm trying to decide if I want to get up again and run before work to avoid the projected 95 degrees tomorrow afternoon.4 -
May Goal: 100 Miles
5/1: 12.03 miles
5/2: 2.02 miles
5/3: 5.05 miles
19.10/100 miles completed for May
I ran 5 miles this morning. It was chillier than I expected it to be. It was about 55°F, but there was a 15mph North wind. I was a little underdressed. I was surprised that it was so cool. It t is supposed to be over 100 this weekend.
@Faebert I am glad you are back and on the road to recovery.
@RunsOnEspresso I can't imagine having a 6 year old run a marathon.

Hi all! I totally got left behind again, so busy I can't keep up!
Nice to see some old names showing up again, and some new ones coming on board :-)
So, umm, April. April was a tough month, I raced a mountain HM on the 16th (omg part of it was literally rock-climbing!) and then a flat (slightly downhill actually) HM on the 1st of May. Combined with some way too long, hard training sessions courtesy of Evil Coach number 3, I'm feeling pretty wiped out right now so have decided to skip club training this month for a number of reasons. Our trail club was great to start with, Evil Coaches 1 and 2 are great guys and I learned so, so much from them. BUT Evil Coach 1 got head-hunted for the provincial mountain running team, and Evil Coach 2 got a big promotion at work. One guy is running a 100k new weekend so has been following his own plan for a few months, another had a baby (well, his wife did, obviously) so has had a few months off, others had other excuses, but all in all group training has turned into EC3, a triathlon athlete they know who obviously pulled the short straw, babysitting me twice a week. And his entire training focus is "let's go as far as we can, as fast as we can, for a couple of hours". Story short, I'm exhausted. No matter how many times I suggested we should go slow, do some easy runs, etc. etc. he just ignored me. Then the penny dropped after the last of these episodes that I don't actually have to go and endure that, especially when I am paying for it (albeit a token 10€ per month). So I announced in the group chat that I'll be doing my own thing and training in the mornings this month. Actually feel quite relieved!
Fact is I'm signed up for a 17k trail race at the end of this month around the village where my mother lives, and it starts at 10am so it's going to be HOT. Meaning I will be training at that time of day all month in the hopes of somewhat preparing myself for that, rather than sticking my head in the sand and suffering on the day. (I seem to be getting old and wise or something).
I'm also signed up for the same mountain HM I ran last October, which made me cry the first time I ran the course. I've decided these things are like child-birth, they hurt like hell but you forget the pain lol.
But... and here comes the really exciting part, then I did a thing and signed up for a 35km race 3 weeks later. From what I can see, it will basically be just like the one before it for elevation but with a relatively flat 15km warm-up. I'm excitified (excited and terrified) already! I've tweaked Hal's Novice 1 marathon plan, so the mileage is as low as reasonably possible, but will be making a conscious effort to get as much elevation into my training as I possibly can. We'll see how that goes!
So that's pretty much me running wise. With the low mileage as I recover from the last couple of races and save my legs for the next, this month will look pretty conservative on paper, probably around 110km, but at this point, my legs are telling me they need quality over quantity.9 -
I've had a bit of a slow start to the month and going to aim for 30 miles again.
05/05 3.38 miles
3.38/30 miles
Welcome back @Faebert - Ur accident sounds awful but your back! For me I keep telling myself 'Slow and steady Marissa and U'll get there'.
@elenorhawkins - love the term Evil Coach, souds like u have a hell of a month planned.
3 -
@elenorhawkins glad to see you back. Sounds like you have been busy. Great job on those races. And feeling excitified is a great new word! I love our new vocabulary 😁
You are in Spain right? My daughter is going to Barcelona next month for a mission trip. Any insider info I can pass along to her on what to look out for, and / or what to stay away from?2 -

I am in Spain, but at the opposite end, down on the southern coast. Never been to Barcelona so I can't really suggest much apart from the obvious tourist attractions (Sagrada Familia, Camp Nou, museums...)
It is known for pickpockets, as most large tourist cities are, so tell her to be very careful with her stuff!
On a travel note, I just booked flights to the UK to go and see my Dad next month. At last! Many of you will remember that he collapsed not long after we all came out of lockdown back in 2020 and it turned out to be a brain tumour. They removed it that October and he's been through radiotherapy and chemo, but with all the restrictions and the extra precautions to ensure he didn't get Covid I still haven't seen him. In fact, I haven't seen him, or my grandparents, since Easter 2017. Pretty excitified about that, too! (I have yet to be brave enough to stop wearing my mask in shops, etc, although they removed that rule a couple of weeks ago. I also got on a bus for the first time since before the pandemic on Sunday (but I kept my mask on there, too!)8 -
@eleanorhawkins Sounds like you made the right decision regarding the club training if you felt relieved. It's good you are listening to what your body needs for some recovery time. I'm so glad you're finally going to get to see your family. It has been a long time!1

May totals: 16/100 miles
3/2: 3.2 miles
3/3: 6.6 miles
3/4: 3.2 miles
3/5: 3 miles
Recovery miles this morning and a run through the sprinklers. Uneventful and easy, as a recovery run should be.5 -
02.05: 3.20km in 26min 10 stride repeats
04.05: 6.45km in 57mins
Well, that went completely wrong! In total I ran about 5.1km, and much slower than usual. Decided as running was going so well lately to do a bigger loop without possibility to return home should things go wrong. Yeah, furthest away from home my leg muscles gave up and I started to get dizzy and could not see sharp anymore. Cue many, many alternations between running and walking. Also was a wee bit more terrain that I thought there was. Oh well... can't get much worse than this. On to the next run

Tuesday - 10 miles
Wednesday - 6 miles
Tuesday I quit work early to pick up my pickup at the mechanic (new muffler) and since I had extra time on my hands I decided to drive drive a bit further and continue my pursuit of running every street in the town next to us. I've already run all of our city and all of the town where we keep our boat. I'm now 81% through my our neighboring city. Since I now have to drive a about 15 minutes to get to new roads I don't go after it as much. The run wasn't all that great. I had to do much more walking that I'd like. I was glad to be done with it. Another frustrating part of the run is that I paused my GPS when I stopped to look for a geocache and forgot to start until 2 miles later. I created a manual entry for Strava and Garmin Connect and just drove the part of the route I missed with my GPS on to capture the route for the site where I track my streets.
Yesterday my 6 mile run turned into a slow run. I had intended to run two loops of a local park doing fartleks but again, my body just wasn't having it. It's a mile to the park and with no sign of being able to do fartleks I decided to just go as slow as I had to to keep from walking. That was mostly successful.
In retrospect I think I'm not getting enough sleep. Garmin tells me I've been averaging 6.5 hours per night over the last two weeks. Time to get my butt to bed earlier.
GVRAT is going well. I'm in the top 10 to 15 percent depending on when I look at the standings. I'm mostly racing my effort from two years ago though. That year I finished the 635 miles with just 2 days to spare. This year I hope to finish with 3 to 4 weeks left. If you're not familiar with GVRAT, it's the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee. You have May 1st through August 31st to run, walk or hike 639 miles across Tennessee, virtually. It's run by Lazerus Lake, of Barclay Marathon fame, and his crew. When they first did this in 2020, the first year of covid, they got nearly 20,000 entrants. Last year was 5200 and this year is 2000, so interest is waning. In 2020 it was the motivation I needed to have the most running miles in those months ever for me. Last year I had to skip it because I was out of running for 7 months due to bad case of plantar fasciitis.

@kgirlhart – Good luck with your May streaking challenge. Maybe @7lenny7 should sign up for that one…..
@Teresa502 perhaps I should sign up for one of these races.
https://www.runningintheusa.com/details/88204
I'm guessing you don't get a shirt for entering these.
@polskagirl01 that hike with your son sounds fabulous! I think logging the hike has an easy run is very justifiable particularly when there's a lot of elevation involved. Your body doesn't know miles or pace, it only knows stress and I think they're comparable in that regard.
@Scott6255 I can't even imagine hitting 221 spm, even on a downhill.
@martaindale I think a variety of shoes is beneficial. In both road and trail shoes I have varying drops from 0 to 10mm, and varying levels of cushion. I have 7 pair in active rotation.
@Faebert ouch! Glad your back to running and welcome back.
Hey @eleanorhawkins ! that mountain HM sounds wonderful. EC3 does not!
Regarding the 6 year old marathoner - I don't it was a good idea but I also don't have that much of a problem with it. First, there's no way you're going to get a 6 year to complete a marathon unless he wanted to finish it, I don't care what you're parenting style is. Secondly, your body has a way of shutting down to protect itself and I don't think a 6 year old has the wherewithal to push past that. Finally, the family didn't *run* it. They took 8.5 hours to finish, which is a pace of 19.5 minutes per mile. He'll recover. He'll be fine. Of course, this is coming from a guy who ran 5 miles with a ruptured tendon in his foot and who told his son to keep playing basketball for two games with a painful wrist when we later found out he had a fracture, so make of that what you will.
So much for our cool spring. Some forecasts have us getting to 97F next Wednesday! That's just nasty.

Hey @eleanorhawkins ! that mountain HM sounds wonderful. EC3 does not!
Yeah, these mountain races are very addictive! I say they're like childbirth, they hurt like hell when you're doing them but after the pain wears off you only remember the good bits. EC3... don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy and an impressive athlete (he's doing an ironman this weekend while still having a messed up neck from having been hit by a car while on his bike a couple of weeks ago) but he isn't a coach, and his style of training doesn't work for a perimenopausal slow woman **rolls eyes**
@polskagirl01 I also agree with everyone about the hike... I include my rare incursions up the mountain as 'elevation training runs' even though there is very little scope for me to run on our goat tracks!
@martaindale the thought of snakes being a normal thing for you makes my skin crawl! Someone turned the heating on again here and I'm planning to run 10-12 tomorrow so will be copying you and praying for sprinklers. Doubt I'll find any out in the hills though... I've been tempted a couple of times recently to just turn down towards the beach and run straight into the sea. This summer's not-quite-marathon training may see me end up doing just that!
So much catching up to do, so many things I have meant to comment on then forgotten, hugs and likes all round!

@Faebert - @Scott6255 is right. You have had a rough couple of years so be gentle on yourself. I’m glad you took some time off to heal after your nasty fall. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will eventually get back to your usual fit self.
@eleanorhawkins – You have been a busy bee. Good to see you back with us! Glad your dad is doing good and that you are getting to visit your family.
@Scott6255 – I have no advice because I have only visited there once, but have to say that I love Barcelona! The Sagrada Familia is a must see.
Oh my goodness @7lenny7! Who even knew that category of races existed!
2 -
@SummerSkier - that song made me LOL! 😂 also maybe a theme song for @7lenny7... who knew there were clothing optional races!?!
@polskagirl01 - love the pictures! Did your son enjoy the hike?
@Faebert - welcome back! So sorry you have been in the hospital and recovering all this time. I agree with everyone else, just take it slow and listen to your body. Maybe even try out C25K to ease back into it?
@Scott6255 - my daughter loved Barcelona when she was backpacking around Europe after her undergraduate degree. Maybe not what you want to tell your daughter but mine said they had the best Sangria she's ever had...
@RunsOnEspresso - I think whether they were running or walking taking a 6 yo out to do a marathon is wrong. It is so hard on their bodies. I am sure he would do whatever his parents wanted him to do, like it or not, but it doesn't make it ok. I am surprised the RD would allow it.
I have gotten some run/walks in, some good, some not so good... Had my first PT session today and he is confident I will get through w/o surgery. It was painful but we are working on range of motion/pain relief and then strength next. He also said I have done a great job 'protecting' my shoulder and now I need to stop doing that 😁
Tomorrow it is supposed to be warm again so I am going to 'try' to get out early (for me). I took Hobbes the other day and he was really struggling in the 75F heat. Unlike him but I think as he is getting older he is getting more heat intolerant.6 -
@eleanorhawkins You’ve been busy! With all of the races and training you have done, I think you will do amazing at your upcoming races.
@Scott6255 Hubby and I went to Barcelona a few years ago. I will try to look back at some of the places we visited and give you some suggestions.
@7lenny7 Your map is crazy! That is awesome that you have explored so much of your town.
I ran before work again yesterday. It was a Foundation Run - 5 min Z1, 35 min Z2, 5 min Z1. 2.51 miles total.
I’m supposed to run intervals again tonight, pending the storms passing through before I get home from work.5 -
Thanks for the advice and suggestions about Barcelona @eleanorhawkins @Teresa502 @shanaber @marisap2010. I will pass it along to my daughter.
7 miles this morning. It was such a beautiful morning; upper 50F, very light wind, only 82% humidity. Found a great Spotify playlist, Kenny Wayne Shepherd radio. Wanted to make the most of these conditions, as it will be one of the last nice days before the hell of summer. But even with all that going for me, the actual run felt terrible. Tried to go slow and easy, but only managed the slow part. Was even about 1:00/mi slower than normal slow, but felt 2x harder. Only felt good for the last half mile. Just chalk it up to one of those days and move on I guess.
5 -
@Scott6255 I just sent my daughter a text asking about Barcelona. She spent a summer interning there about 4 years ago and loved it.4
-
@marisap2010 here's my running history for most of the Minneapolis metro area. I use CityStrides to track it. Can you see the Christmas tree I ran one time?
6 -
I think @7lenny7 makes some good points about the 6 year old. Personally I think it's too much, but I don't know the kid or his normal activity level. A kid who runs around playing all day can probably cover the marathon distance, walking with breaks over an 8.5 hr period. Would I recommend that parents encourage that? Not really. There are plenty of better ways to encourage an active lifestyle.
I actually really tried to discourage my 11 year old from the hike. He insisted on going on a group hike once in winter when he was around 4, and it was a disaster. And I've had a complaining 7-year old ruin another group hike once, and was not looking for a repeat of that either. I was pretty clear on expectations, then let him decide. He did great, and had fun.
I decided to count that hike on my training plan as a shorter easy run AND a cross-training day, which gave me an extra rest day today.
Last night we picked up a car about 15 minutes from one of my mountain start points. So I took the extra car and went for a quick fast hike up "little goat mountain", took a picture of the incoming storm, noted that it was getting dark and both my phone and watch batteries were dying (oops), and promptly double-checked that the "green trail" indeed went all the way back to my start point, and ran back down following the trail markings (and very odd and excessive amounts of cement that had been brought in to "improve" the trail). Drove through the storm on my way home.7 -
