One of my many loves is paddling a dragon boat. We usually start the season in early May and paddle till late October. Our weather has been really unsettled this month with lots wind, rain, hail, lightening, etc and so last night was the first time I've been out in the boat this season. It felt wonderful!! And we were rewarded for our efforts with this:
FYI, our youngest paddler is in her late 20's and our oldest one is 80. The 80 year old is one of our strokes (the paddlers in the front seat who set the pace) and the coach always has to remind her to slow down! Oh, and our coach, who also sometimes paddles, is 75.
Here's a picture of some of us from a couple of years ago:

Love reading all your stories. I have always had to fight to keep my weigh under control. But I was always lucky when I was younger and if I put too much on I could lose it quickly. But I've learned that it's even easier to put it on as you get older. As Ann pointed out only adding a little adds up quickly over time. Now at 72 it doesn't come off as easy. But logging on MFP and reading all the good advise here really helps me to keep control of my eating habits. Thank you all for sharing. It always helps too to know I'm not alone on this journey.4

Wow, dragon boats look like such fun! Don't think I'll ever see one where I live, it's mostly big winds and ocean waves here and way too rough. Your post inspired me to look them up on YouTube and want to try it sometime, maybe on a vacation where they offer the experience.

@SbetaK, keep your eyes open. Here, even before there was a dragon boat team, a local city brought in a commercial outfit to run a one-weekend race. Usually, there'd be a day of practice (on some river or lake) then a competition day (just fun-competition, mostly, though some teams were more rabid than others). There were always teams - maybe sponsored by a local community organization or charity group - that were looking for members to fill out their teams.
The folks from the commercial outfit provided boats, paddles, life jackets, basic instruction, and had their staff man/woman the rudder for safety. The races were short (500m), so pretty do-able. I never competed, but several friends did (including um, mature ones like us). I did get to paddle one of the boats from a put-in point to the competition/practice site one year when my rowing club was providing volunteers to help staff the event.4 -
My vacation to Botswana and Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) was incredible. My plan was to eat everything I wanted, but in smaller portions. That plan didn't last long. The chefs were amazing and the food was some of the best I've ever eaten. So, I enjoyed myself. I'm still getting over the jet lag and caught a cold, so I'm giving my body the chance to rest.
The exciting news is that the weight I gained, over 8 pounds, is already dropping off. When I left I weighed 189.2 and on Monday, my weight was 197.6. Today I'm at 193.4. After I get over the cold, I'll be back to exercising and meal planning.
This trip was made even better because I'm 70 pounds down from when I last traveled to the African continent. It was so much easier to climb in the safari vehicles, to fly on the small planes, to carry my luggage and to do everything else. I can't wait to do it again when I'm down another 20-30 pounds. I've started saving already.

Good advice from James Clear (author of "Automic Habits") in this morning "3-2-1 Thursday" email ..
"before you try to increase your willpower, try to decrease the friction in your environment."
and ..
"Most big, deeply satisfying accomplishments in life take at least five years to achieve. This can include building a business, cultivating a loving relationship, writing a book, getting in the best shape of your life, raising a family, and more. ... Five years is a long time. It is much slower than most of us would like. If you accept the reality of slow progress, you have every reason to take action today. If you resist the reality of slow progress, five years from now you'll simply be five years older and still looking for a shortcut.

Hi. I’m 65 years old and just joined, so I haven’t set up my profile yet. Just thought I’d say hello.
Over the past few years I’ve gained a few pounds that I hope to shed. I know what I need to do and it’s time to mend my ways.

Sounds like a fabulous trip! I went to Uganda on a humanitarian trip about 10 years ago. We worked hard and then treated ourselves with a few days at a lodge in a national park before we came home. The food was amazing and we were able to tour around the park and see the animals. They say that when you've been to Africa once, you'll always want to go back. I think there's some truth to that I'd especially like to go back weighing what I do now because it would make the heat much easier to handle.5 -

When you travel, Google the area you're in for dragon boat clubs. I believe that most clubs will offer a "drop-in" fee and set you up with a paddle and life jacket, and put you in a boat that's an appropriate skill level. A first time paddle with us is free at my club
I think the main reason I enjoy the dragon boat is that you paddle as a team. In order to get the best result, all 20 of us must be in sync. At our age there aren't many "team sports" available and I missed that. And I love being out on the water on a summer evening. It also helps that we often go for a drink and wings afterwards5 -
Good evening. This group was recommended to me. I am female, in my 7th decade and healthy and active. Could do with losing a few pounds to keep in shape. Major problem in diet is carbs: home baked bread, passion for curry with rice, home grown potatoes etc. Will get round to uploading photo to my profile once I am more familiar with site. Anyone here from UK?4

@Colyan38 welcome! Not from UK, but all are welcome. I’m from Colorado, SW of Denver, in the foothills. Can you call just shy of 8,000’ the foothills, lol?5

Welcome to all the new people!5

I had kind of an NSV on my walk yesterday. The toe of my shoe caught in a crack in the sidewalk and down I went landing on my hands. No serious damage, I scraped up my hands pretty good. Nothing broken. Here comes the NSV.....I hopped right up without any problem. Didn't need anything to hold on to. A few months ago I would never have been able to get up like that. If I was down on the floor I needed the support of a piece of furniture to get up.15

Oh, I forgot to say....I'll be 70 years old in October.

I actually had something similar happen to me at work. I do dialysis on patients. I was doing it in their hospital room. We have hoses that we have to connect to a water supply. Sometimes they are across the room to the bathroom faucet. I tripped over a hose, fell on the knee I had the Tibial plateau fracture in 2015. I too hopped right up. When you don't have all that additional weight to push up it makes a world of a difference!6 -
@swimmom_1 yes, it is amazing what your body can do without the extra weight. Being more active than I used to be helps, too. I just feel so much better in general than I did a year ago.4

Me too! I can't believe I put up with that weight for 7 years after I lost it before. I'm in a better place psychologically and think I'm going to be better at controlling my cravings for certain foods/snacks.5 -

Hi everyone! I'm also looking for a group facing the same weight/health/age challenges. Please add me as a friend, and welcome me to the group?
I've been on WW numerous times, last year I joined again online and lost 60 pounds, and then they changed the program, and I lost my motivation and started gaining weight back. Since spending $22 a month was getting ridiculous for a program I wasn't using, I came back here. I think the key to staying with any kind of program is finding like-minded people who can cheer you on and you can cheer on in your turn.7 -
I am learning Just found out what NSV is!9

@Sue_Smiles yes I’m back too. Was on WW and new program messed with me too. But need to get back on track2

Welcome to all of you2

As a trainer who's almost 60, I can attest you can get into shape at any age if the approach is smart and reasonable. I have a couple of clients who work out with me over late 50's and one of them can squat 275lbs with great form. I started training him in his early 50's though. Right now, in the best shape of his life ever.
Also have another who is pretty fit, although there are some flexibility issues that I have to work around to try to have her be completely fit.
You have to have a program that fits your current fitness level and progress from there. That's why assessments are important and not just a way where gyms try to get you to get personal training. I have about 50 clients right now and the majority of them thought they didn't need help. But with their improvement comes confidence and keeping them safe from any exercises that they shouldn't be doing.

I’m so relieved I’m not the only one who had problems with the new program. Here’s to a healthy lifestyle!1 -
Hey pals, sorry for being largely absent lately; I am struggling with my appetite, food choices and calories, but I am logging everything and not giving up!! I switched my target to maintenance per advice on these boards and I think it is helping to take the pressure off.
I couldn't really be up 5 lbs...but that's what the 😈 ⚖️ was showing this morning at my daughter's...back home tonight. Sheesh.
Welcome newbies!6 -
@ridiculous59 I hope you can get back. I got addicted the first time I went 18 years ago. This was my fifth trip to the continent. Any extra funds go into my travel bucket. It was so amazing at a lower weight and I bought most of my travel clothes at Goodwill, which was a huge surprise. I'm already planning the next visit. This is another reason to stay focused on getting healthy. I want to be healthy enough to travel as I get older.4

I'm feeling happy today. I'm down 14 lbs. I have 15 more to go to get to goal. We are going on vacation Friday. I hope I can just not gain wait on vacation.7

Hi All,
I am a 67 year old male. I joined MFP in 2014 at 205 lbs (recorded as 202 lbs because I didn't know my scale was off by 3 lbs) and, after about a year or so of gradual weight loss, I reached my goal weight of 165 lbs. Some months after that, perhaps it was a year, I stopped using MFP, thinking I could keep the weight off with the knowledge gained from MFP. That worked out for a while, but now, here I am again and this time, when I weighed in the day before yesterday, I was at 208 lbs. I feel I owe most of the success I had the first time around to my weight loss friends here on MFP so I am looking for some new weight loss friends. This time around, if I ever do reach my goal weight, I plan on sticking with MFP.8
