Thoughts RE MyFitnessPall moving the barcode scan to premium?

Finding another app.Very Disappointing.
The app and interface is already behind the times and has its own issues. Aside from no ads and other non-essential, value-added features; I can't see any advantage to switching to paid-premium, especially subscription based. A subscription service for this app isn't worth it at all. I'd pay $10 for a "PRO" version of the app that keeps the ads but includes some premium features.
It's sad that I 'll lose my streak but I think it may be time to start looking at other apps.8 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?Very disappointing. I'll be keeping my eyes open for other apps or websites, but I think I will try using the feature in Fitbit.3

Finding another app.Bold choice to continue to remove features when MFP isn't in most peoples top 3 recommends for a diet tracker. Loseit, Carb Manager, Cronometer
We aren't hurting for options7 -
Finding another app. They should have added new features that bring value to encourage people to pay. Removing features and charging for them is the wrong move.8

Finding another app.Definitely going to be switching apps. That feature was really the only reason I was still using this app. No way will I pay a monthly sub cost for that one thing. They already had me irritated with the constant pushing premium in my face every time I open the app.
Maybe they should try actually improving the app, instead of just taking free features and making us pay for them.5 -
Finding another app.Been a member for a decade and tolerated the ads up til now. But the recent change happening in October has finally pushed me over to Cronometer.
Very much a situation of 'read the room' going on here. Between rising costs of everything and the fact there's plenty of other free alternatives now... this latest decision by MFP is only going to push users away, me included.

Finding another app.It says a lot that they can't think of anything new to bring to the app. Moving previously free features behind a pay wall, a subscription based one no less, instead of creating new features people would be willing to pay for is a mistake.
You know what would have been an innovative feature for premium, as opposed to removing free features? A weekly calorie plan. Are you someone who has a weekly pizza night? Maybe you meal prep for the week but brunch on Saturday morning with friends. People rarely consume the same amount of calories every day, so why not have a weekly allotment of calories that you can distribute amongst the days of the week?
An example of how it would look:
Goal: average 2000 calories a day
Weekly total: 14000 calories
Sun: 2200
Mon: 2000
Tue: 1800
Wed: 2000
Thu: 1800
Fri: 2000
Sat: 2200
That way you can fit your goals to your lifestyle better, and not just "eating back workout calories." Most people are more social eaters on the weekends, so being able to allocate calories for those days within the app would be helpful as a premium feature.
Don't get rid of the free barcode scanner. Not worth the loss of users.5 -
Finding another app.Nice try MFP. I only came back for the food tracking, I already switched to another app for my work outs. This may be the thing that finally sinks this old boat.6

Finding another app.Barcode reading is litterally the only feature worth a damn. I am going to be losing a 1000+ day streak and 3 years of weightloss tracking when I leave on princple oct 1st3

Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?I know most of these sites are now charging at some level and adding advertising, etc.. but to strip away a basic functionality on a site that has been plagued with tech issues over the years is silly.
I'm not totally sure if this will wipe me out of here but it sure does make me consider it.2 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?I would be willing to go premium if the food entries weren’t crowd-sourced and inaccurate. If they maintained a good database of updated entries, I would be far more willing to pay a premium price for it. Even the barcode scanner doesn’t match entries sometimes. Not sure what I’ll do. I might do the 50% off for the year as I am managing the beginning year of maintenance. After that, re-evaluate.6

Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?50% off eh? What's the basis, full, monthly price, or the discounted annual price? I'm with others, give me something new and I might pay, taking something away and asking me to pay; I'll pass.

Finding another app.Agree with those who have commented that the barcode feature was the best feature of this App, and gatekeeping that behind a premium sub is the end of the app for me.
I understand that Under Armours earnings are down, but I can't see this as a solution to that problem0 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?I feel like a LOT of the barcodes I scan come up as not found, or the wrong food, so why would I pay for that?? The only reason I might consider paying is because they have made the ads more intrusive, but then I can just use it less on my phone and more on my laptop, where I have ads blocked.1

I'm not sure Under Armour owns this anymore.. Do they?0 -
Finding another app.I'll probably switch to cronometer. Got super annoyed when they started playing ads while I was trying to log my food, and taking away barcode scanning is some *kitten*. Bye MFP. I've been using it off and on since 2012!2

Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?Hey so this is the first time I've posted on these forums. Didn't know they existed. Once I saw that they are cancelling the bar code function for non premium members, I had to go and make sure I wasn't the only one that was peeved off. I'll definitely be closing my account and looking at other apps.0

Finding another app.Imagine having your userbase build up your app through word of mouth, add recipes and food items to the database, and generally be okay with annoying ads since it's free.
Only to defecate through our sunroof and decide to strip features, push yet another subscribe-every-month-forever in order to keep features that were standard. They're following the industry of making us rent every function of our lives, but it's still *kitten*3 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?Just downloaded Cronometer and scanned in my first item. I have been using MFP since 2011 and I am very disappointed in the latest announcement. Where is the logic in taking away an existing feature? Maybe you guys need to invest in better developers and innovators for your brand instead of punishing loyal users. Hate to lose my streak and my friends but not willing to go back to typing in every entry or paying for what was free.0
-
It's unfortunate, but understandable. It's probably the best "feature" they have, so it makes sense that they would use it to drive the subscription side.
Personally, I've got 90% of what I eat well established in my recent list, or in my foods/my meals... so I rarely use the barcode scanner at this point.0 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version? This is a strange decision and I'm concerned that this will also reduce value for premium members - surely the database of new barcodes will be much smaller with fewer members adding new content?2
-
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version? The "free" version is NOT FREE--it's paid for by advertising. It's irritating to have to click through a stack of slow ads just to log my exercise but that's a price I'm willing to pay. I am not willing to fork over cash to use an app with as much competition as MFP has.
Any bets on whether this turns out to be MFP's "Netflix moment"? Remember, Netflix lost 800K subscribers and its stock price dropped 70% as a result of their corporate cash grab earlier this year. Wise up, MFP.2 -
Don’t like it. How about if MFP does better marketing or adds other options to premium vs taking function away from free version?I think it totally sucks to charge for scanner. They could at least show a little class and grandfather in existing users. I have been here since 2009. Seriously looking at LOSE IT APP.0

No, it was sold to a private-equity firm in 2020 at a loss of $130M.
As to the OP, it has no impact on me personally as I haven't logged anything in years and for the most part I only really use this platform for the community. But yeah, it sucks. I started here in 2012 and it was the best free diet and fitness app out there IMO. I kind of saw the writing on the wall when Under Armour bought it in 2015 and added the premium option.
It would seem to me that they're now trying to migrate to an app that is paid with either no free access or a free version that will be limited to the most very basic things. A lot of fitness apps have done this over the last few years, but the problem for MFP is that they are an inferior product in many regards.
There biggest issue is the food database, followed by the constant glitches and downtime and syncing issues. I personally vowed never to pay for premium unless and until they have a database that you don't have to wade through to find a correct entry. One of the things that made it great in 2012 was that the database was far and away larger than anyone else's database due in large part to crowd sourcing of those entries...but then you end up with the issue that we see today with a database that is very large, but also filled with a bunch of hot garbage.
I'd guess this doesn't end well unless this private equity firm revamps the whole thing...but I'm not sure a private equity firm is really that interested in the functionality as much as just making a money grab.2 -

The database for free and premium is exactly the same and the barcodes pull up the same thing as it would if you just searched for it...the barcode scanner doesn't mean a correct entry is actually being used. The barcode scanner is pulling from the same database as the search function would, they aren't separate databases.0 -
@cwolfman13 The community may be the next thing to go for paying customers only. Aren't we just free users instead of customers.0

Honestly, the community is really the only thing MFP has that is superior to anyone else out there...probably because it's been around so long. But even the community isn't what it used to be back in the day. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if it becomes a premium only feature but that in and of itself would not making MFP worth paying for. If I was someone seriously looking to track calories and nutrition I would have likely migrated somewhere else a long time ago. When I was tracking, MFP was basically one of the only players in the game and certainly the biggest...not really the case these days and I'm sure there are a lot of people who can take or leave the community.
I'd certainly miss it as I love chatting on here, but all good things come to an end at some point.2 -

I know. The soup kitchen vs. the dining room. No more soup for you and me. I'm just an ol'hound dog yakkin' on a bone out here in the sagebrush. 😋 I guess it's time to pack UP my marbles and head for the house. A few more chow hall ditties, first.

Completely agree. It's the community component that kept bringing me back. Though, as you say it's nothing like what it used to be back I first started in 2013. The Ban Hammer did some serious damage when it was implemented.
I remember when there was NO App and when there was an App it didn't have the bar code reader. I was totally excited when it began.
I've tried LoseIt and Cronometer and they both have different levels of 'subscriber' versions. I may be wrong but I think their free versions (for now) include a bar code scanner - who knows for how long. Their community component always lacked severely to me - but again - that may have changed by now and improved. I think Cronometer required a paid subscription to have 'friends'.
All in all, these things are free to me since I'd never pay for any of it, so I guess I get what I get. If I'm not willing to contribute to a subscription, I have to put up with ads I hate. And.. now... I lose a functionality that at one time didn't exist.1 -
@justlog2day Let's just get it while the gettin' is good. I paid for a big name weight customer community. It was as interesting as watching paint dry and the grass grow. It was mods and volunteers, the discussion was dead. If the community goes away, we have to pay to play. You have to mix it all up to keep it vibrant, exciting and alive.1
