A Question for the ladies :)

I had a bit of a search and i dont think this specific question has been asked (yes its a period question) lol

Anywho this week i turned into a raving lunatic and completely ditched my excercise, stuffed my face and stopped logging my food :/ I have not felt this way during a period in years im starting to wonder wether my diet and excercise program has brought this back on

The last time this started happening i was trying to lose weight and it was in the end, the thing that made me give up because i felt like i was losing my mind

i think possiblly i havent been feeling these affects for the last year or so because i was able to self medicate with alchohol and bad foods which i have now given up, so now its left me wondering what do i do? i cant allow myself to go into this dark place every month i honestly feel like i cant control myself physically and mentally

has this happend to anyone else, is there anything you think i could do to help i am considering going to the doctors soon but unfortunatley the doctors in my area are awful and seem to hand out antibiotics for absoloutley everything so im hoping they can be a last option

I LOVE the care bears on your weight loss ticker! They are cute!

I don't have this problem, but I wanted to say, at least, to still log your food. To still get the "bad" food, you may be able to fit it in during this time while watching your overall calorie intake. Continuing to log your food might make you realize not wanting certain foods after you hit a calorie point.

I log no matter how ugly it is. Somedays I've hit over 3000..but hey, it went in the mouth, it should be logged. It is what it is. It HAS made me rethink some other foods in the present.
  • Well, I do crave food more during my period. But you gotta use self control and just keep telling yourself not to eat it. It is hard, but stick with it. Try to keep yourself busy so you don't think about food. That helps with me.

I HATE taking pills... but I do have to say The Pill might help if you are able to take it. I am on the generic version of Yaz right now. I hardly get a period (just enough to say - "Hey! All cool!") And I no longer get any PMS (which I DID used to get on other pills.)

    OR

you could try making healthier versions of the bad foods you like?

When I felt out of control (especially emotionally) around my period I went to see my doctor and we switched my birth control. I haven't had that problem since.

I think it is a very good question, I too have become a raving lunatic and had huge cravings and I started to realize it was happening before and during my period. Yes, it is true - our hormones reek havoc on our minds, bodies and souls. If you are/were self medicating maybe talking about what feelings you are medicating underneath may help? I went to counseling and uncovered a lot of "stuff" and it helped alot, plus she helped me learn ways to cope and deal with my rage. Good luck, feel free to add me as a friend for support and encouragement.

    Blessings,
    Jeanne Marie

That happens to me every other month or so.... I make myself log now even though I am completely embarrassed by it, but it helps me keep myself in check at least a little. It always takes me by surprise though.

I've heard your body temp increases when you're on your period and you actually do burn more calories, but only a tiny bit more -- like 100 or maybe 200 per day.

I cut myself some slack and my weight still keeps going down despite a few days of craptastic eating every month. Try and stay hydrated, and try to compromise when you're craving something really bad. I tend to just keep mini chocolate chips in the house so when I NEED chocolate I can have a tbspful of them and it's only 70 calories. If I make myself eat them one at a time it takes forever, too.

I am pretty bad around that time of the month too.... craving and usually eating lots more naughty foods. If you can't control the urges then just let yourself have ONE bad day where you have some chocolate and dont beat yourself up. Make sure you limit it to one day, do extra exercise (this will probably help in itself) and dont let it become an excuse for a whole 10 days (pre-menstrual, menstrual, post-menstrual hahahaha)!

I'm usually too frustrated with water retention during my TOM to think about cravings. Water is good at suppressing cravings. Also, try yoga. It helps with menstrual pain. Maybe it could help with the menstrual loonies. Good luck!

Another suggestion is to plan your meals ahead of time during your TOM. You can always give yourself a treat so long as you have made up for it with your meals.

Oh! And I  the doggy in your profile pic!!

Lol! Some pills have made me bananas, too! OMG - I tired the Ring for 2 and 1/2 months and had the nice little "emotional instability" side effect.

What do you crave when you PMS? Maybe the healthier version would be the way to go? I love crab rangoons (70 cals. a pop) and found a baked verson (40 cal a pop). you can make lower cal mac 'n' cheese. Lower cal sweets.

I thought I heard somewhere about B vitamins being good for lessening PMS??

Look up Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder...sounds like you in a big way. The national institute of health has a website with legit info on it - ncbi dot nlm dot nih dot gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0004461 only take out the spaces and put a " . " instead of "dot" :)

I have had completely the opposite to you. Before starting this diet I used to crave chocolate and crisps and get very sore breasts and water retention. But since joining MFP I have no symptoms at all!! Its strange how changing your eating can affect people so differently

How do I get the care bear ticker? I don't remember seeing it when I chose mine?

regarding eating more at that time of the month - i get cravings for choc more and sweet stuff - (once ate a entire packet of scones with clotted cream and jam on them each day!) ,, and used to eat loads choc and alcohol and pop I'd get cravings for (love Brandy and coke) .

I got some diet patches off ebay to try and use them just for that week, they do help.. I still have a bit of choc but a few pieces instead of an entire large bar and I avoid getting too many puddings in,

I get my shopping online so make a list of healthy stuff I want and then I only have that in the house to eat (though get a few small choc bars for 'emergencies') I think it helps that I'm not tempted by all the other stuff in the aisles then.. if I went to the supermarket I always end up coming back with twice as much as I went for!

I think it helps that I'm mainly housebound so I dont have to deal with workmates eating cakes in front of me, passing vending machines everyday with choc and crisps in, I try and move about as much as I can though I usually have first two days with severe backache and stomach cramps, so take those days off from exercising.

Luckily for me my choc cravings come a few days before they start so I can still exercise on those days when I eat chocolate!
