How many others have this daunting task?
I'm excited to get started. I know it's going to be a long journey, so I may as well get going now. I won't melt off magically afterall.
I'm 37, have lost weight in the past, but have always had weight issues.
I'd like to nick them once and for all. Hope all of you can help me in my journey.

Make every 5 pounds a celebration! They add up fast. Before you know it you will be at goal. Congrats for taking the first step of the best decision you have made!0

I share your pain as I was well over 300 lbs. Don't give up you can do it. I tend to get discouraged at the slow process as I want it gone right away. I had to accept that it can be a slow and long process. If you need support feel free to add me as a friend

Welcome!!! I'm on the same journey, so I can tell you that you've come to the right place. I use a BodyBugg to track my calories out and this site to track my calories in. I've lost 50lbs since April! Just be true to your diary and track everything you eat. I've learned so much about food here! Knowledge is power! :bigsmile:0

What is your opinion on fast vs slow weight loss?
Do you think it's best to work hard, lose quickly in order to gain momentum? Or do you beleive in the slow and steady, long term sustainable, behaviour changing approach (with the risk that you'll get bored or give up)0 -
Working on 130 lbs as an interim goal I'll see when I'm closer if the 155 I want to lose is going to be what I want. Log everything, weigh portions while you figure out how much a serving actualy is... some stuff I was eating way more than an appropriate serving and others I was only eating half...0

I believe in slow and steady. With attention to making changes I can sustain. To that end- I will say that the first 30 lbs came off rather quickly for me and really helped to keep me motivated. I have to work a lot harder now but I'm in it for the long haul so I don't mind.0

I have 91 to go, but a couple of years ago I took up cycling and lost 20, so I know I can do it. I just need to get back on track. I just finished my second day on South Beach. I'm finding it easier to follow than I thought it would be, and my calorie totals are under the goal, so I think I'm good there.
It is daunting. I've been inspired, though, by a program called Heavy, which I watched on Netflicks a few days ago. There are only about eight or ten episodes and they address two really, really obese people in each one, who are invited to attend a residential health facility (one is in Austin, the other in Hilton Head). I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford a place like that, but the people's stories were really inspiring. Every one of them had great success, mostly from addressing the psychological reasons behind their life-endangering habits.

I'm with you at over 100 to lose. I like the fast results, I feel that the numbers motivate you...When you see a quick loss (Like 4 lbs in 5 days for me) It makes you want to do more!0

I think you should do whatever you feel most comfortable!! I am going at my own pace.. I think as long as you watch your calorie intake and work out (which I always start out small) and trust me if you start working out every day, you will soon become upsessed with working out because of the way it makes you feel after. Start slow and increase your exercise when you see fit, I'm starting out by walking, and then I will increase it to the eliptcal and so on0

I need to lose just about the same amount that you have to lose! Trust me you can do it! Today is my first day and I am feeling the energry from everyone and its very enlightening! GOOD LUCK!0

I started with over 100lbs to lose and am almost halfway...
Slow and steady is DEFINITELY the way to go for me. I can't give up the things I love (like chocolate) but am prepared to put in the hard work to counteract that.
It's taken me a year so far, and I'm prepared to put in another year to finish it off.
Just get yourself in good habits with logging and exercising regularly, and everything else will follow.0 -
thanks. that's what I figured I'd do...start slowly with adding walking in 15 minute increments, and take it from there...I've climbed stairs several times, and I'm looking forward to doing some stretching videos, and strength training, but don't feel strong enough yet.0

very cool. I planned on taking 2 years to lose it... (averaging a lb a week) I know I could do it faster, but I want the changes to be gradual and natural.0

Trust me when I tell you that you are more than capable of getting to your goal weight. Five years ago I was 272 and today I am 191. I still have a while to get to my goal weight but I will get there. Here are a few things i have learned from this journey.
1. dont focus on the entire amount you have drop. focus on the first 10%. once you have accomplised that reward yourself with a non food item like sneakers or gym clothes (whatever makes you happy). Then focus on the next 10 %
2. positive thoughts- your mind is so powerful
3. surround yourself with positive people who are healthy
4. The scale is not the only way to measure your effort. Use a tape measure as well or reward yourself for a change in habit
5. diet sodas, splenda or other artificial sweeteners dont have calories but they make work against you.
6. you are worth the effort and time it takes to get this done.
7.EXERCISE, but only doing things that work for you
8. enjoy what you eat. I dont care how good something is for me, if I dont enjoy it i will just keep eating and eating.
9. do not trust your eyes. measure and weigh everything.
10. invest in your health ( sneakers, healthy foods, gym, personal training) what ever you can afford and do not apologize for it
11. water, water and more water. i never drink juice. i hate wasting calories on liquids. i make an exception for a glass of red wine

Dont think of it in terms of 100 lbs, cuz that just seems like its crazy impossible...
I broke my back, and was unable to walk for a year, and put on like 70 lbs. I decided last October that I had had it...Ive been heavy all my life and just was sick of it.
Ive lost 103 lbs in 11 months, and am lighter than I was in High School (47 now). Im about 7 lbs from my goal, and I have no doubt in my mind that I will keep it off, this time for life.....But if you had asked me 'so...think you can diet for a year"? I would have said...NO WAY!!! But I just set small incremental goals, and kept at it.
11 months on a diet sounds tragic, but it really isn't. One day at a time. Eventually, it becomes second nature, and a new lifestyle, and you'll find yourself looking at other people thinking..."how can they EAT that &*#%...".....0 -

YOU DO NOT HAVE 100LBS TO LOOSE AND DO NOT FORGET THAT!
you have 10 lots of 10lb to loose....not so bad now ehhh :huh:
if you look at it as 100lb you really will never get there but set the goals at 5 or 10lb intervals and it will become second nature to you loosing the little ones and before you know it you will be flying!

The exercise is hard at first, I know I won't be jogging anytime soon, but do what you can! I have Biggest Loser workout Dvds that are in 10 min increments, so if you feel meh one day, you can do one or two, but if you're feeling up to it, you can do 3 or 4! Eventually I want to be able to run a mile...but that's gonna take a bit Is anyone doing any specific diets or just watching calories? I'm doing the 17 Day Diet.0

I am pretty much in the same boat. I'm starting off at a whopping 307lbs. And as most people have stated, you really don't want to look at the big picture because it can be really scary. Break it up into smaller goals, and attack it. You aren't going to be at your goal weight tomorrow, next week, or even next month. However, you can make good progress toward it. I received my first "Are you losing weight?" comment yesterday, and its those moments that let you know you are making true progress toward the big picture.0

Well I have aboput 100lbs to lose now I started off needing to lose about 150 lost 50lbs got preggo with my son and now Im ready to get the rest of this weigh off!0

For me, I am going the steady stable 1 pound a week. It took me 5 years to gain it and I know it will take close to a year to get it off. To be honest, I have done the quick weight loss route for the last 40 years and seems like I always took the quick route back to gain it all over again plus some. That's just me - do what works for you.0

I agree with you, I definitely want a healthy sustainable slow weight loss. It's not a race for me.0
