One time I attempted highlights on my own it nearly ended in shaving my head. I looked like a tiger striped freak and it cost me a bucketload of $ to have it all corrected..not to mention the emotion trauma of thinking that it couldn't be fixed.
    Never again.

    Salon.

I went from dark blonde (natural) to medium brown about a year ago, 5 weeks ago had it lifted slightly and it turned ginger, which I hate.

Next week I go again and hopefully it will end up closer to dark blonde. I've never had red tones in my natural color before and I have no idea where they came from. My hair guy KNEW I'd hate it and said to just wait 6 weeks with it in this horrid color. I could deal with a nice honey blonde but this? Not flattering at all.

Whats the real trick ladies, is date a girl who is a hair stylist, or find a friend that does it. My girl is a stylist, and she has people come to her house, cheaper than the salon, and she makes more money. Now she works at a salon too, but all her friends and family just come to her house, and shell make $250 in a day, but the girls are only paying about 1/4 of what theyd pay at the salon

    Home most the time

Every now and then I'll splurge. But not often.

I've been coloring my hair at home for years. I can't afford to get it done at the salon. My son always tells me "You have to go gray sometime.". I say no I don't as long as they keep making hair color.

At home for sure. It fits my budget better, and now that greys creep in more often, well.....

I use ION liquid products (Sally Beauty Supply), and I mix it myself.

LOL..must be a man thing. My brother asked me one time "when is mom going to just give it up and let her hair go gray?", and I said..."not while there's life in her body..and why should she?"

From the song "Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)" (1998)....Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85. What's so bad about rockin' the color nature gave you? I'm wearing my first sparks of gray proudly.

I'll wear them proudly when I'm older. I'm only 25, and I've been getting random gray strands since I was about 19. Now, the "random strands" are becoming more and more frequent.

I think I may go with Harley's suggestion, and try a beauty school.

I've been dyeing my hair myself since I was 9 and there's no way ( other then if someone else payed for it) that I'd go get it done at a salon , I know what color I want and how to get it so why would I pay up to 100$ more just so that someone else can do it for me lol
I have as a treat gotten my hair done in salons in the past and the only thing I'd say is it's great for if you want really Blonde hair and don't know how to safely bleach .

My hairs been every color under the rainbow and I love to dye it :)

I do my own after my stylist screwed my hair up royally earlier this year. I had pieces breaking off and floating around my face after she applied bleach to give my platinum highlights. No thanks!

I don't use department store stuff, tho...I go to Sally's and buy professional stuff. It is less than $10 and I get it the way I want!!

I don't like to pay expensive salons to get my hair dyed. I don't dye my hair often, but when I do, I use home dyeing products :)

I use to dye my hair at home all the time, but sometimes I ended up greenish gray if I picked a color to ashy, or redish orange if I picked something to warm. My hair is finicky and pulls red really strongly so The last 4 years I have given up doing it myself and started going to salons. I think if you are doing 1-2 shades different and have a friend come over to help you make sure you dont miss any spots you will be ok, but if its a drastic color change go to the professionals, at least if they screw up they have to fix it!

Blond Excellence, 9G, at home forever. It's a tiny bit strawberry for the first few days, then it settles nicely into medium golden blond. But it's not that many shades lighter than my natural color.

I go to the salon for my highlights. I had a friend who BEGGED me to help her use a highlighting kit in her hair....yeah she definately ended up with cheetah-spots. It was baaaad. If I'm that terrible when I can see what I'm doing, there's no way I'm going to risk coloring my own hair!

Not sure what some of these people have done to themselves at home, but if you use a good products, do a deep conditioning before and/or afterward, and get frequent enough hair cuts, there's no reason your hair has to end up looking bad or damaged.

I've done my own for years, and get compliments on the color all the time. Plus my hair stylist thinks I'm doing a great job on my own, and since she's the one who stands to gain by suggesting I do it at a salon, I'm inclined to believe her!

There's no reason or excuse for looking older than you have to...its 2011, and the technology to keep us looking fabulous is here...use it!

What's with that magical tube of conditioner that comes in the box dye? Do they sell that stuff by the bottle?

Go to the salon, the boxed colors look soo bad and dull. It is expensive but looks a hundred times better!

Personally, I think at a certain age, we should just step away from the box dye:)

I wouldn't recommend lightening it yourself, but dying it darker why not.

And do what? Let the natural color grow in?

I'll never do my own hair. I'm too afraid I'll mess it up and it would cost me even more to have someone fix the color. Plus I love my time at the salon!

I have never had my hair professionally done. I am too cheap and because i dye my hair at home it will cost more for them to color correct it first before adding colour. I would like to get it cut some time but i cut my own hair too. When it is long it is easy.

My husband prefers I have my hair done at a salon.
I think he likes to pamper me, but it could be he hates the smell, or maybe a professional just does a better job. (I don't ask I just prefer to think he likes to pamper me....)

I use to get my hair done at the salon all the time. Lately though dropping $120 every 6 weeks for a cut, color and highlight was getting a bit too much. I now color my own hair at home and it comes out great....with the help of my hairdresser from the salon who helped me pick out the brand and color best for me! lol

My mom's a hairstylist, I have never paid to have my hair done. Now I live 700 miles away, I dye it myself. I've been spoiled for so long I refuse to pay or let anyone else cut or do anything else to my hair. I REALLY need a haircut though, it might be awhile!!!

While I have to agree, depending on the age and color (like no shoe-polish black after a certain age), I have to say, you look pretty young. I'm willing to bet your opinion will change when you're a little older.
