The Bacon Case

Guilty as charged; I like by bacon 3x a week. Ideally I should replace it by something like oatmeal or beans, I know.

The bacon I used to buy was reported to have 210cal per 2 slices. However I bought some from Costco (Kirkland), the slices are bigger (67g raw).

I weighted them this morning and it was 64g. Cooked in paper by microwave, they came down to 18g for both slices.

Assuming 9cal per of fat (which they are probably 80%), this would be 162cal logged or should it remain 280cal? I am confused. TIA.

Look at your package. The nutritional information for bacon is typically for 2x cooked slices rather than raw like most meats. Log that. I get Kirkland bacon at Costco and the nutritional information is for cooked slices.

It mind-boggles me that something as light as 18g should have 280cal. Does cooked bacon have 16cal per g?

At the same time, see the hits I found on MP.

Well, the real world data (yours) shows that 2 slices after it's cooked weighs 18 g's and if you use 9 calories per gram, which doesn't allow for any actual meat is, like you said 162 calories, use the real world metric (yours). Cheers.

Cooked bacon has between four and six calories per gram, depending on how it's cooked.

Search for "pork, cured, bacon, cooked," in the MFP database and you'll see options for various cooking methods, such as pan-fried, microwaved, and baked. The default serving size for them is mostly one slice, but the drop-down menu should have an option for 100 grams or 1 gram.

As an aside, in lieu of bacon, consider pan frying prosciutto slices in a dry pan.

It crisps like bacon, is savory like bacon, and an uncooked serving of 28gr is 70-80 calories, depending on the brand.

It’s also 100% less messy and dry-fries in a minute or two.

It also tastes lovely and delicious and more’ish.

Board’s Head is OK, but Lidl’s Preferred Selection is way better, imho. An ounce of the Lidl gives me five or six nice slices.
