Why is the word always "lurkING" and never just "lurk?"

" Who knows who else could be lurk?" - not very good grammar, is it?

Could it be the same reason people are standING and not just stand?

Should we tag all the OGs & frequent posters to help bring this thread back to life? What if I start with @skahtboi ?

You don't think @nossmf was wondering why 'lurk" isn't used instead of 'lurking', do you? Didn't I understand him to wonder why you don't see or hear references like, "They like to lurk in the forums."? Isn't it more common to see stand used in its non-gerund form?

Doesn’t it make sense to say they’re lurking because it’s something they’re actively doing?

Who is this mysterious "they" and why are "they" always doing something questionable?

Would it surprise you to learn I can't stand when people lurk around while I'm enjoying my chocolate?

Was I surprised to learn today is World Tai Chi & Qigong Day (the last Saturday of April)?
    How should I/we celebrate it?

This reminds me...reading a commemoration of Willie Nelson turning 90, did you know he was a 5th degree black belt?

Have you ever seen a sportwatch's GPS tracking of one's path while walking indoors?
    Doesn't it resemble a child's scribble?

Does it truly have that level of resolution? Didn't it seem like only last week when GPS was accurate to within a hundred meters?

isn’t it ironic how her remark about it continuing actually stopped a lot wonderful chain of questions?

Do you realize your observation about stopping question-chains, having not been in response to the previous question, itself stops a potential chain?
