Going over calories - do you just eat less the next day?

So.... if you have a blow out on one day (I'm on 1200 calories a day), should you extract the amount you are over by from the next day, or just carry on as usual?? and do some exercise!

I just treat it as a bad day and start from fresh the next day
You shouldn't undereat because it can put your body into starvation mode.

Just carry on as usual.0

Hi I try to balance my diet. I don't eat less the next day just work out a little harder or you can eat less if you choose. I think that will be okay.0
-
id say exercising rather than cutting the calories0
-
No...the day happened, so just move on to the next day, making wiser choices. Maybe up the water intake to help flush out extra water retention, but eating less the next day does not negate the previous day. Eat your proper calorie totals and move on!
Good luck (and I hope you enjoyed whatever brought you over your goal....remember life happens and not every second is in our control).0 -
I make sure I'm super good the next day, both with calories and with working out! I've only had a handful of slip-ups in 6 months, but what has totally changed for me is that I've gotten RIGHT back on track, instead of saying WTH & blowing it for days!!
Good Luck!! :drinker:0 -
I too just treat it as a new day but am extra careful to be good!0
-
do some exersise to gain calories back0
-
It is always a new day for me.I try to eat less and exercise more and no tension or brooding about the previous day.0

A one day blowout is fine. It isn't like you are going to instantly put on weight. Just go back to normal the next day. I wouldn't even bother doing double exercise. One day is not going to magically make you fat.0
-
exercise harder to make up for it0
-
I make sure I'm as good as I can be the next day. Maybe stay a little under. I also drink tons of water and try to get in a good burn! Good luck!!0

Although I log daily on MFP, I consider my weekly calorie intake, some days are below, some are above - as long as overall the week is your "ideal" level and you drink lots of water, and exercise - I figure I'm okay.0

Thanks everyone! I haven't gone that far over... maybe 200 calories. Just feeling guilty about it I guess, and yes, it was worth it
I shall continue on as normal and drink heaps of water and do more exercise.
I really appreciate all of your comments and help! Feel free to add me if anyone wishes, I know I could use the support0 -
I always drink extra water after a bad day. It seems to work for me.0

exercise harder to make up for it

Exercise or just move on.
If you start that whole "I'm gonna eat less tomorrow because I ate so much today" thing, then you risk having like no calories left at the end of the week if you have a couple bad days.0 -
I have been told to double my workout after having a splurge. Like the other day, we had a family cookout and I ate quite a bit. It wasn't "bad" fried foods or too many high calorie desserts, I just ate a lot. So, in the days that followed, I just added some extra workout time.0

Oh, and I am extra good with my diet the following days and drink plenty of water!0

Undereating 1 day will not put your body into "starvation mode".0

I don't make deals with myself. I don't carry calories or exercise over from day to day. I can not trust myself to do that. Once you start down that road, then what? Like Kalrez said, your going to be out, or so confused, you will need spread sheets to stay on track.
Better just move on by far. Do better, take personal responsibility. Maybe its not to bad going over one day.0 -

That being said, I just move on. Exercise is great, too.0 -

Increase the amount of ca you do thus increasing the amount of calories you consume. If you workout every day you won't have to feel guilty.0 -
You can eat less the next day to make up, it won't put you into "starvation mode". Plus, a lot of people look at net weekly calories, not daily.0

Friday's are always my naughty day, because I work late on Saturday's and know I am not going to go over. We usually go out to dinner and have a few drinks and I can live with that. Or this whole dieting and exercising thing will never be sustainable for me if I cant enjoy myself occasionally!
That said, I try not to go over too much, but if I do....I work my tooshie off the next day :-) Oh and water......SO MUCH WATER!0 -
I just try to get back on track the next day. And occasionally flog myself if I was particularly bad.0
-
It's up to you. Eating too little for a day WILL NOT put you into "Starvation mode"! (tired of hearing this load of bologna). It won't hurt to eat a little less or exercise more the next day, but I just start fresh the next day.0

~This is why I dont weigh myself every day, as I can go up and down 4lbs, ok this is on a monthly time, but it still happens. Maybe it is just me? Pout... But I would say, just move on, we all have down days, that is what makes the up days so much more fun xx0 -
Treat each day as a new day!0

I would start over the next day fresh. I went over by 98 yesterday, so I did my regular 30 minutes of exercise, and made sure I got outside to do a little extra activity, as well. I'd much rather make up the extra calories with exercise than by eating less! Plus, I am regularly under my calorie goal, anyway (I'm above 1200), so I don't feel too bad about going over a little bit.0
