Hi I am Charlotte from Essex UK, just turned 30 and married mum of 2.
I spent my whole childhood as an underweight person all the way up to my 1st pregnancy at 21, then I've piled the weight on and I mean piled.
I eat for absolutely every reason, happy, sad, bored, busy. I love food.
I've been to my GP and asked for support and got no where, I enrolled with weight watchers online and have purely paid £80 over the last 8 months and never actually done it.
I've been to life coaching and the three meetings I paid for, the life coach didn't show up so I've kind of put it to the back of my mind and thought well there can't be anything seriously wrong otherwise I'd have been supported but I've come to realisation that no one will help if I won't help myself.
So here I am confused, worried and further more wondering where the hell I am going to start!

  • Daunting, isn't it?

I don't think I ever read a negative comment on here, so you're in the right place to start. Use MFP, set your goals, stick to them and use the support you'll get on here. Forgive yourself your bad days when you have them, and keep moving forward.

You have to start somewhere, and that's half the fight. You don't need a GP, a life coach or anything else. The best of that kind couldn't do a thing if YOU weren't ready to DO something.

If it all sounds too simple, maybe it's because we prefer things to sound complicated, n'est-ce pas?
  • hello also from the UK, you sounf like me, eating cos your happy, sad, to celebrate etc.

Here you'll find support from friends and from the boards. Choose your goals and log your food even when you know you'll go over your cals. only by seeing what we eat can we learn and educate ourselves. Good luck with your journey. remember, don't ex[pect results overnight, we are here to learn ans for the loung haul.

I am so proud of you for not giving up. I am from an Italian family and we love to eat too.... .weddings, parites, funerals, etc. : )
Just like another member said, "log your food" no matter what... it really helps to see it. I, too have piled on the weight after my sister passed away last year. I had to decide for myself that I needed help, and MFP has been a blessing! You can do it! (Yesterday I allowed for a piece of pumpkin pie, logged the calories and ate it....... guilt free)!!! If I can do this, so can you.

    Hi Charlotte,
I know how hard it can be to manage urges to eat when you want feel some sense of comfort.

My partner and I have recently done the Lighter Life diet. They have a programme that helps you to learn why you eat to comfort. It's not the easiest of diets but does have fast results.

Another help is a little book called 'On Eating' by Susie Orbach, she's a well known psychotherapist who specialises in eating problems. It's a really easy small book to flick through and can give tips for looking at your eating habits.

Since coming off Lighter Life my partner and I have been following a low glycaemic index way of eating. It works on the principle that everything you eat ultimately breaks down into glucose, which is the body's fuel. Some foods break down much quicker than others (eg white bread, mashed potato, crisps) and this leads to cravings for more, rises in the body's insulin levels, and excess fuel being stored as fat. By eating low GI foods you get a stable level of energy, a reduction in cravings, and mood becomes more balanced. If you look on You Tube for a guy called Patrick Holford he talks about it in a way that makes sense. There's loads of books out there about low GI diets and as a mum with young kids you might find a low GI is the best, most balanced way to loose weight. If you combine it with reading some Susie Orbach stuff that might help even more. Good luck!
