Your children are watching

I was very fit back in the day. I've struggled with my weight for the past probably decade. During My marriage, my kids have really only seen me be overweight.

Recently divorced and I had them with me for summer when I started my journey.

My journey began with fasting. Although they initially didn't know what it was, they noticed my discipline. And my commitment to is made them want to to try it. They'd say "we fasting with you today daddy".

My 14 year old returned home and she fasts on her own. I've never told her to. She just does it.

My 8 year old has gone home and his mom says that since he got back he brags about daddy losing so much weight and new eating style and habits.


When you want to quit or skip the gym or just Binge eat everything. Remember.....

Those little eyes are watching. They are being impressioned. Which impression do you want to leave?

P.s. if you don't have kids then someone else's kids are watching you..and they will call you fat the first chance they get. Once I walked in the hallway of my apartment and this 5 year old kid said to his mom... "that is a very large person mommy". He was right.

    I agree with @cupcakesandproteinshakes. I'm a grandmother so maybe you'll listen to me. You want to be a good father and set a good example for your children. That's the whole purpose of your post. I commend you for that. However, a 14 yr old is still growing and needs different nutrients than adults, and on a different timetable. If you really want to help your child ask their pediatrician if IF is alright. Then follow the recommendations.

    I'm telling you this because some parents get into a certain type of dieting and can harm their children without meaning to, if the child follows them. There are strict vegetarians, as just one example, that have damaged their children and growth. Don't be that person--ask advice first and don't close yourself off.

    I’m sorry OP. I’m too direct sometimes. As background, my daughter was displaying some signs of disordered eating and I think it may be in part due to her seeing me diet when she was younger. Heather Robertson of the half size me podcast has had some childhood obesity specialists in her show. Their advice was not to encourage restrictive eating practices in kids who are still growing.

    Since I work in a middle school at lunch hour, I would at least monitor your daughter and ensure she's NOT having any disordered eating since it's very common starting in middle school and can evolve into a problem for some girls.
    And you're right, your kids do watch. I had a female ask me how she could get her kids to be more physically active and my first question was "what do you do to be physically active?" and the reply was "nothing". And so the behavior is carried on.
