Just a quick fly by
waving at everyone. .... LA is still more LA than A days for me that is a win.
Has been a great few days6 -
21st day AF.
I am staying the course until Thanksgiving then will decide, probably in the moment, if I want to indulge that day. I have to realize that if I do, I will not stop at one and I have to weigh what I want more: continued sobriety or a day (or more) of drinking.6 -

Had a small glass of wine yesterday. I have found I can just have a small glass once in a while and it doesn't lead to 3 or 4 like in the past. So far so good....7 -
I have a quick question for any of you that watch what you eat (I watch it go in and can't stop myself sometimes LOL)...anyway I picked up this book by Michael Symon Fix it with Food at my local library. It talks about food and relationship with pain/discomfort with your body. He talks about a 10 day reset. So 10 days without dairy, meat, flour and sugar. There are recipes for each of the 10 days for all three meals. All veggie, egg, some rice, legumes, and some fruit.
Then you choose what to add in next, of course there are recipes to try. But you try the omitted foods for a few days, evaluate then either drop it or begin to add more.
Having arthritis I know beer is a trigger for joint pain for me. But I have chosen to drink this knowing the next day could/will be a bit more painful.
Just curious6 -
@lmlmrn I know that certain foods lead to inflammation in the body, and cause a whole host of problems. However, I’ve never really looked into it closely. The book sounds intriguing!
Well, after needing to wring out my liver after my Nashville trip, I am “LA” with only one glass per night since I’ve been home, but I know I should be AF instead. I just look puffy and haggard in the morning lately. I don’t think my body is done processing all the alcohol. My sleep is terrible these last few nights too.
Goood news is that I’m logging my food again and the weight is coming down. Trying to live off some of these fat reserves! Haha! I have a tennis match tomorrow so I hope I sleep well tonight! Wish me luck!3 -
@Womona Good luck in your match!
@lmlmrn I have never undertaken an elimination diet, but did discuss it with DD#2 when we were looking for a Dx for gastric issues before she went to college. Ultimately she decided she wouldn't be able to execute, because of access/control over food available and more so her own commitment to stick to it. I do know it takes commitment because it is a protracted project. If it helps you feel better for the rest of your life, you are worth that commitment! Best of luck getting to the bottom of it.
@Michieb125 Great photos! Must have been fantastic. I love it when extra activity and extra food & wine balance out on a long trip. Good on ya! I had the worst restina when I was in Greece. You must be better at wine selection. Glad to know the good stuff is out there.
@xbowhunter Thanks for sharing the "key" you found to unlock the ability to enjoy a small amount. I am looking for that key. If it is wine being poured, one almost always leads to 2 or 3.
Excited for all the DDs to be home for the holiday tonight & tomorrow! November has been a tad better than Oct, but that isn't saying much, to be fair. Per my usual rut, consistent AF M-Th but weekends over goal. Planned drinks Tuesday and Thursday, so adios to weeknight AF.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!2 -
@Lmlmrn I haven’t read this book or the science behind it but I found a lot of information on the Arthritis.org website that talks about best eating plans and lifestyle changes. No surprise that alcohol is one of them. I believe it suggests following the Mediterranean diet which has heart benefits as well (lean meat and fish, vegetables, lentils, etc.). The foods you listed from the book sound very reasonable because I believe clean, fresh nutrient dense foods are always better for inflammation than processed or restaurant selections. Good luck!

Checking in- did not make it through my consecutive dry days but did stick to one "A" day out of 9 which is a definite improvement for me...in the past it would have been more likely to be 5A/4 AF. Also made it through Fri & Sat evening, the reason I gave in Sunday was due to an impromptu football party. DH is traveling for the weekend and last night I was seriously considering polishing off the last of an open bottle from Sunday but ultimately paid attention to what I wanted...which was not wine!
The rest of November I have a few planned "A" days but I feel good about where I am now!6 -
Thanks to everyone for the insights on the eating/elimination type short term diet type thing. I am still looking at the recipes for the first 10 days. There are things I know I will not eat. So I will have to duplicate some meals which is fine. For example for me I do not like squash, ....butternut, spaghetti, zucchini, etc. I am ok with cucumbers, pickles go figure?
Anyway I am still looking at it. And yes @Michieb125 it looks to be very Mediterranean type diet in the begin, but then again if I remember Michael Symon is greek? so that wold make sense.
I think I will try some of the recipes after turkery day.
Did I mention my granddaughter is spending a week with us? So excited. I pick her up tomorrow...Me a 14 yr old girl and DH....IN rual OH what are we going to do???Hahahahaha....I see cooking, learning to sew and making her own (lightweight) cosmetics and skin/hair care.
So today we found a new place to eat / have an adult drink. So had a burger and 2 beers then home for a nap. The cool thing though for me is I don't feel the need to continue drinking the rest of the night??? I know right?

I won my tennis match! I’m so happy, I really needed that win, not just emotionally but because I’m trying to move up from 2.5 to 3.0 rating in USTA.
Did I tell you I started taking ballroom dancing with my husband? We enjoy it. I grew up taking dance so I’m picking it up pretty quickly, but my poor ex-football player husband’s brain is exploding sometimes!
Two drinks totally yesterday, one at lunch to celebrate the tennis ein, and a drink with dinner. That’s it. Weight is still coming down. Thank God!5 -

Well, I haven't been following my plan but I have been drinking a lot less. For example, we drove to Norfolk on Friday to pick up DH's race packet (he's running in a half marathon this weekend). I had a 0.0% Guinness at dinner at an Irish restaurant there, then two 5 oz glasses of wine at a fancy wine bar where there was a great jazz pianist. Normally, we would pick up a bottle of wine on the way home and finish it off while watching movies, but we didn't do it. We both were very glad the next day and happy with the way we felt. Saturday included a beer with lunch and that was it for the day.
Rolling Total: 7 AF Days out of 18
@Womona I do love those boots! Fancy!
@MissMay I agree with @lmlmrn about the iced-tea-in-a-wine-glass idea. It's all about the glass! . And speaking of deserts, DH and I had Duck Donuts for breakfast yesterday. I ate a whole one and then sampled a couple others. They were delicious, but I don't want another one for a long time!
@Michieb125 @lmlmrn I also have arthritis and have never done the research about the food connection. I'm going to check out the arthritis.org and may also order that book.4 -

It's kind of crazy to me how easy it is to fall back into bad habits. After feeling pretty great mentally and physically when focusing on making the right choices, the last 3 days were right back to old times - only stuck to my goal of no more than 3 one day this weekend (and technically it was 3 and a half so that really doesn't even count). With the holidays approaching full swing I feel anxious about making the right choices for both food and drink.
I admit to being rather annoyed that for the last year my weight stayed the same regardless of when I was drinking, cutting back, eating salad, eating burgers, working out, working at my desk - feeling discouraged at that aspect lately, like no matter what I do I neither gain nor lose. Just stay the same.4 -
Waving to all after reading lots of posts on how you are incorporating LA into your lifestyle - I think we can all relate to the struggles and wins.
Over the weekend, I reviewed what strategies worked well for me earlier in the year. I did best when I planned ahead to have wine only 2 times a week. This was very doable and my log shows I was able to achieve this goal for almost 7 months in a row. I really would like to start that pattern again after relaxing too much. Yesterday, I was committed to being AF and then a (recurring) family issue encroached on my whole day and my anxiety went through the roof. I was already very tired and decided to have a 1/2 bottle of red wine (small individual bottle) to unwind and logged it. Luckily I did sleep all night.
How are you spending the holiday week? Some may be experiencing grief or loss, while others might be cooking for your family or preparing to travel. What do holidays bring up for you? Please share only if you are able!
Whatever it is, may we all use self-care strategies to maintain our personal priorities for our own physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health, whatever that means to each of us….and stay safe!

I have been drinking mindfully for the last month or so.
If I want wine, I keep it to one small glass. Not drinking alcohol Monday to Thursday. I didn't think I could limit my intake because I was a daily drinker for far too long, but I have been able to drink mindfully and it's working very well.
Cheers!5 -
Good evening/day to everyone
Doing good with LA, not totally AF but so So SO much better than past years. Each day I do with either a small glass of wine mid day or skip it all together. Depending on what we have going on.
Have 14yr granddaughter with me until Thanksgiving. Picked her up Saturday morning. We are starting her sewing journey. LOL
It is a tad frustrated living in Rural areas. The biggest is not being able to purchase items I could get in any one of a dozen places in PNW. I am on the hunt for of all things. Beef marrow bones to make beef bone broth. HAHAHAHAHA. I am going ot have to travel over an hour to an unknown type store to find them. If I look at my local selections (Wal-Mart, Aldi, Kroger) all I get are gourmet dog bones. There is a 'farm' about 15 miles from here but to me $3.99lb and they only come in 4-5 lb bags frozen seems a bit high....$20 for some bones????really????
So ..... is this really a trade off????5 -

That’s such an amazing transformation for you. I get sucked into the daily drinking routine pretty easily, but you have found the discipline that escapes me sometimes. I’m so inspired!1 -
2nd day AF! Finally. I had 2 large drinks on Saturday, and my “fat pants” are getting snug, so I’m AF until festivities start Wednesday night.4

@2timesacharmmfp - So true and frustrating how it can take us days, weeks, or months of practicing discipline without seeing results. But we can keep going forward!
@Womona way to go on AF this week! And congrats on the big win at your tennis match! You must keep us posted on the ballroom dancing! I love to watch the pros on DWTS .
@lmlmrn enjoy your granddaughter, and happy sewing! Rural life sounds like a BIG change. Good luck on finding the best beef bones . I do like the huge beef stock jar from Costco lol. Lasts forever but not the same as making your own.
@xbowhunter great introspection on your part. We CAN move from daily drinking into a more mindful (and enjoyable) experience. Goodbye to those past headaches, body aches, fog brain, and low energy!
Last night we ate cake and ice cream for my daughters birthday with wine!
Due to my long Mediterranean vacation, my AF counts for this month are completely opposite from what my regular goal is.
AF now until Thursday!
We will definitely will be faced with many food and drink choices over the next several weeks. I am going to get back to walking and my gym classes to manage stress and keep the calorie burn in check.

@lmlmrn ...for your marrow bones, have you tried any of the Amish in your county ?? Somewhat of a closed community, but once you make friends, they are the loveliest people. They built me a huge pole barn with an attached furniture stripping room for my antique business in Southern Maryland. Quality workmanship.
End of Summer each year for decades I would drive over the river & order a turkey for Thanksgiving, and pick it up on Tuesday, ready to cook. Today in DaBurgh I have a grocery store bird trying to thaw in my fridge...definately not the same.
Thursday I'll open a bottle of Citra Trebbiano to go with the bird, and not give a hoot that it's not a $50 bottle or that
[ over time ] I'll finish it all myself. LA went well in October, and for the beginning of this month. Time to be "bad" for a while.
May y'all spend the holiday with people that are special to you, and eat way too much turkey. 🦃4 -
Another AF day. I’ve also been concentrating on getting in enough protein, and avoiding my nice bready carbs.
Remember that old line “nothing tastes as good as thin feels?” Well, I’d modify it a little now: “no wine tastes as good as my pants fitting feels”
Tomorrow is wine night at work, and more people will be there than normal to kick off the holidays together. So I’ll definitely have some, but still need to be mindful of what I’m eating. I wish Thanksgiving wasn’t such a treat- laden meal. Between all the yummy sides and the homemade pies, it’s really freaking hard!!!4 -

Still not drinking and not counting either. I feel pretty good. I am indulging in the Trader Joes's dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Those are better than booze for me.
BTW I did start to get arthritis and A LOT of stiffness and not drinking gave me a huge improvement. I want to say I went from 80% discomfort down to 5% now.
@Womona congrats on your tennis accomplishments!
Everyone have a great and enjoyable (and mindful) Thanksgiving with no A or very less A!4 -
@globalhiker - you are really on a streak with LA or no A this month, so incredible. Congrats! Love those chocolate PNB cups too.2

Going into the holiday this week, I have felt extra tempted to imbibe with the wine for celebration sake (anticipation). This is my first LA experience that I will be going through the holidays with LA and it is interesting how I noticed I am so programmed to automatically start reaching for a glass or two.
Yesterday, I intentionally stopped at a store and picked up a bottle of champagne, but also fever trees, cranberry fizz drinks and have some Stella 0.0 on hand. The NA choices are in my arsenal for this weekend.
I need to manage my stress a bit better so heading to a Zumba class.
May you find your resolve and have a safe and blessed LA holiday everyone!
