Am I being unreasonable?

I'm 23 years old, 5'1" and my goal is to be under 110. Is that so crazy? I went to the doctor and weighed in at 119..they told me I didn't need to try to lose any more weight; they said I was in danger of being underweight! I'm not tiny or anything. I've got fat on me, I have a belly. All I really want is to be toned and healthy but I know that when I get the body fat off that I want, that'll put me at about 110 or less. I really think that would be a good weight for me...
I've been a member for a while and I've had success on here in the past. BUT...I've fallen off the wagon and I've got to get it back together. Now that it's not summer any more it's too easy for me to backslide and not care as much about what I eat and how often I exercise. So I'm trying to get motivated again and kick it into high gear. =]

5'1" is pretty short, and if you've got a slimmer build, I don't see why there'd be a problem being under 119... ultimately it's your body, not the doctor's, so sometimes you should just follow your instincts! :flowerforyou:0

i'm 5'2 and i want to be 105! so i don't think it's unreasonable just listen to your body. the lowest weight for me to still be in the healthy range of BMI is 101. so i'm sure it's right around there for you as well.0

you seem to be at a healthy weight. Don't focus on the scale, just do cardio and strength training to firm up your belly. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat. good luck girl!!0

I'm 5'1" as well and 110 is my goal weight. I'm a few years older than you and working at a desk all day caught up to me.
I don't think 110 is unreasonable at all for our height as long as you still eat healthy and take care o yourself. Just do remember that when you tone up a little, muscle is more dense so if you don't necessarily make it to exactly 110, but you are more lean and muscular, it is still ok.
Good luck!!0 -
It really depends on your frame size, how much muscle you have and how healthy you eat.
If you have "enough" muscle to be active and you also actually eat healthy, then you can probably weigh what you mention.0 -
I've met a few girls your height, and they're usually around 100lbs.
but they're pretty skinny too..not much muscle to em.0 -
REad this, maybe that is what you need to do???

I don't think it sounds unreasonable, but how you feel in your clothes and in your own skin is just as important (or more) than simply a number on a scale. Being an active and healthy 119 would be wayyyy better than an unhealthy 110! So while it is an important guide, consider more than just the scale. And good luck!!0

it sounds reasonable to me... depends on your frame size though....google around about different frame sizes and go from there.
I have a daughter who is 18 yrs old, 5'3" and medium to larger framed and at 120 she looks great.....but she is taller than you, right?
So do some research....Dr's generally just talk from a general perspective and don't take it all into account....ya know as long as you fit into the BMI chart they are fine
think for yourself and see where you are truly happy0 -
i agree with those that said to incorporate some lifting into your routine. focus more on measurements and the mirror then scale weight0

I'm 5 feet and my goal weight is 110 lbs. I am at 123 lbs right now and that's fat for me. I don't think 110 lbs would be underweight at all in my case because I have a tiny frame and I was 110 lbs below when I was in my 20s. It really depends on your body type.
If you have extra fat then it would be good to lose it and get toned. Getting toned would mean more muscles which are heavier and you might gain weight in the process and not reach the 110 lb goal. I think the focus should be on getting toned and not reaching the 110 lbs.0 -
I would say that about 110 sounds like a reasonable weight for that height. I think that you should just focus on toning and making your body stronger. This will probably help you get the look you want even if you don't lose much weight. I also agree with others here: just be sure to eat well and keep yourself healthy.0

I was going to post that same link. I highly encourage the OP to read it. It has some great photos of Staci at ~170lbs, 117, 130 and 140.
She basically looks about the same size at 117, 130 and 140 -- the difference is that she gets progressively more definition and a leaner look instead of just looking skinny.
If you want to just look skinny, focus on the scale. If you want to look lean and fit, the number on the scale is practically meaningless for someone who is looking to change their body composition (if it isn't combined with some accurate measure of body fat %).0 -
no, you're not being unreasonable. You're 5'1" and very young. I'm 5'2" and weighed between 105-110 lbs. at your age and I was very healthy, just small.0

Wow that website is amazing! And I have exactly the same fear - I've found loud music helps put you in your own little world0 -
I have to say that the advice about 'it's your body not the doctors' worries me a little.
It's my car and I drive it every day but I still trust when the mechanic says I need welding done. Just because I don't see or feel a problem with it doesn't mean it's all ok. He has seen hundreds of cars and knows how they are supposed to be and the doctor is the same for bodies.
I'm not saying take everything he says completely literally but I AM saying you should talk it through more thoroughly. Perhaps you need to focus on lean mass and body composition rather than thinking about weight. You say you want to be more toned and we all know muscle weighs more than fat. What the doctor is probably trying to do is guide you away from becoming too obsessive about pure weight loss.0
