FEBRUARY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the January 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10905779/january-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until February 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

I am racing again this month. Hopefully I will stay vertical this time and shave a few more seconds off my HM. No specific monthly target, just chipping away at the 1200 mi for the year goal.10

Urg. February can’t get here soon enough. It’s still summer holidays here which means I can’t run - hubby heads to works first thing so I’m stuck with the children. By the time he gets home it’s too hot to run - it’s stinking at the moment, today was 28C (83F) and super humid. And by the evening I’m drained. But school goes back on the 7th and normal service will resume. Hoping to get 40-45km per week this year.8
-
My February goal is 200km or higher. I also want to squeeze in time for much needed strength training - and start slowly ramping up speed sessions.7
-
I love badges and awards for some reason and have been trying to get this for ages. No luck yet because there's only so much that I can run.
One more run in January will bring me over 100km. I... don't think I'll manage to get more two more times, but I'll try.8 -
01.02 0km 0min 0/km

Checking in officially for February. Thus in order to get a bit further than this month I need to run 102.20km. 😬 In a short month, and with a 3 day and a 2 day trip inbetween. Lets see.7 -
I'm gonna go for 130 again this month. Shorter month and I'm due a rest day soon-ish8
-
I'm going to go for 85 miles again - total of running and fast walking. I know my schedule is going to be all messed up with everything that is going on, so if I don't make it, I'm not going to sweat it.8
-
February goal is 50 miles.
My 10K Training Team sessions begin Sunday February 11th. I’m looking forward to walking/running with others as I prepare for my April 20th 10K.6 -
I'm in for 130 miles for February.7
-
I'm in for 50 miles.7
-
I'm going for another nominal goal of 25 miles. I hope to do more but the weather forecast doesn't look particularly positive. I also don't know yet what kind of treatment is in store for me, if any during February.7
-
First February run complete. I ran 10.2km. I did a sprint workout and also broke in my new shoes. My feet and legs seem happy that I ditched the old ones. I also ordered a second pair of shoes, so I can alternate and hopefully be a bit nicer to my body . I will also try to keep better track of how much mileage each pair has and not simply wait for them to get holes (which is what happened to last pair - and the pair before that).
New shoes!!!
10.2/200km for February.11 -

Nice looking Sauconys @Laurz9191 . Which ones are they?
I suppose I'll try for 170 miles again in February.6 -
@scott6255 Not the dreadful Kinvara’s thankfully 😅! I must admit that what you wrote did come to mind during my run this morning . These are the Echelon. I have somewhat weird gait/pronation, which means I usually end up having to buy expensive shoes and can’t wear Hokas and the like. But the previous two pairs I had of these worked really well for me - not a blister, no pain, and they have lots of toe room.5
-
Shoes are such an individual thing. I think one of the most important lessons I have learned is to rotate them if you are running more than 2 or 3 times a week - same with walking. And to track the mileage. My left shin seems to tell me quite strongly when it is time to ditch a pair (even if they look brand new the support must be gone) and I always think I need to find a younger running twin my size in the neighborhood who might want these 2nd hand mollies and could probably use them for another year.
I haven't totally decided on a Feb goal. It's our worst weather month here usually. I have run anywhere from 105 last year to 155 in 2020. So far for the first 2 weeks I do not see any blasts coming in so maybe it will be good. So.... starting goal 120. and go from there.

I started off the month with 5 miles this morning. Setting my goal at 75 miles as I'm planning on a backpacking trip on the AT for a few days and although I will be getting the miles in they won't be running miles.
Speaking of shoes, yesterday I listened to the January 24 episode of Doctors of Running. In this episode, they ranked 10 pairs of shoes based on softness/firmness features. The first 15 minutes, they spent explaining the science behind how they determined softness/firmness and they kind of lost me on that part but it was a wealth of information on this subject matter.6 -
Guinea pigs are tired from their workout yesterday. And they found a mystery phone next to the game console. The biggest challenge in doing these is getting the picture taken before the boys realize the girls are there 😆😳10

Hi everyone! I’ve been away from myfitnesspal for a while and missed this thread. I haven’t been running lately due to laziness after recovering from a long bout of plantar fasciitis (ugh, no fun). I’m happy to see some familiar faces and many new ones.
For February my goal is to start running again. I’ve been walking regularly. I just haven’t run in several months now. So I’ll set my February mileage goals as 10 miles “wunning”.9 -
01.02 6.5km 51min 7:50/km Goal pace repeats
6.5km/103km
Checking in for my first February run, a 4 miler, and the fastest 4miler in quite a few years. Goal pace repeats: 10min fast, 5 slow and then 3x5min fast with 3 minutes slow. Wow, this one came out of nowhere. Nice weather, 5C, wind ok.6 -
Goal 400 miles
Short month adds a little difficulty
2/1/2024 15.45 miles, running partner A8 -
About to go out for my first walk/run of the month. Testing out my new socks. Thanks @martaindale for sharing what socks you use. I have a toe that’s been broken at least twice and it curves inward toward another toe and I’m constantly having trouble with the nail cutting into the toe next to it. I’ve been taping and wrapping and trying to cover it and such over the years.
WARNING: sock porn 😂6 -

February Goal: 130 Miles
2/1: 6.02 miles
6.02/130 miles completed for February
Started February off with a 6 mile run in shorts and a t-shirt. It was really nice out this morning, and we are expecting the same tomorrow. I'm sure we'll have some more cold weather before February is over, but it sure was a nice way to start the month.

Love the shoe porn @Laurz9191! I have a couple of pairs with more than 600 miles on them but I wear minimal shoes and it doesn't seem to be a problem for me with those shoes. Others that I have with more cushioning I don't push much past 400 miles or whenever my knee starts to complain. I also rotate through 2-3 pairs so no one gets beat up all the time.
@SummerSkier - we have some youth organizations here that help train high school kids to run different HMs or Marathons like the LA Marathon. They are always looking for donations of lightly used equipment; running clothes, shoes, hats and the like. You might check around and see if there is something similar in your area that you could donate your shoes to.
@Teresa502 - I will check out that podcast. It sounds interesting.
@polskagirl01 - what you don't want more guinea pigs? They are super cute! I bet your kids are loving getting all the pictures of their antics!
@daria0919 and @martaindale - I can't wear Injinji socks because I can't stand having things between my toes (also can't wear flip-flops for the same reason). I have used the silicon toe caps though when I have issues with a nail digging into a toe but I make them short enough that they don't bug me.
Welcome back @emmamcgarity!!
No run or walk for me today. It was pouring all day and when it finally stopped we had just a few minutes before the sun set. Looks like our forecast has a couple of days break from the rain so we will take advantage and get out when we can.6 -
Nice run @Laurz9191 . Love the shoe porn.
Great start to the month @tarun_yadavA .
Five miles is a great start to the month @Teresa502 ! I'm looking forward to hiking pictures!
Hahaha @polskagirl01 . You are doing great with the pictures.
Glad you are back with us @emmamcgarity ! It sounds like you have a very sensible plan in getting back into running.
Yeah for a fast 4 miles @yirara !
@daria0919 Love the sock porn! I hope they work out for you. I don't think I could wear those, as I can't stand ANYTHING between my toes. I can NOT wear flip flops either. Sounds like we are toe twins @shanaber. Nice run @daria0919 .
@kgirlhart Great way to start the month - running and weather wise.
