LESS Alcohol ~ FEBRUARY 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

"It’s almost easier for me to have none at all vs. a glass." - This is very much the case for me as well.
I could go all week without a drink, plan to have one glass of wine and before you know it, the whole bottle is gone! Gone, and I still want more so I'll make myself a mixed drink using husband's whiskey and I don't even like whiskey... ridiculous.
Friday night alcohol free is a hard one for me. My last day of the work week and 20/20 and Dateline are both on. If they're not, I'll find a good documentary or docuseries and relax for a change, actually get to sit down for a few hours, something I usually don't get to do throughout the week.
Last night, I started a docuseries, no wine. And, I stopped eating before 7:00. My mom has lost 18 pounds since September by watching the times she eats and cutting out sweets. This worked for her. She's always been thin and now she's very thin. I'm trying not to eat past 7:00 but I did eat a little ice cream last night.
"I echo the reports of other members of this group that, despite the above, I’m not losing any weight! At least I’m not gaining any, either." This is also my case but I'm doing better and I know I will see positive results soon.8 -
Welcome back to the newer “returnees” from January and grateful for those of you experienced folks who trail blazed this topic on MFP quite awhile back - glad I found it one year ago this month.
It’s already the 3rd of February!
I thought January would never end, and now I have a funny feeling this month is going to fly by!
Going out to an early Italian dinner for my DS and DIL’s birthday’s this evening. I do plan to enjoy a nice glass or two of wine either tonight or with a steak dinner at home tomorrow. For this month, I would like to be mindful of enjoying wine with a celebration i.e., birthdays, Super Bowl, Valentines and my girls vacation. I am still working my LA lifestyle and noticing new ways of looking at things.

99% AF is WORKING! Scale says 147 lbs today. That's 2.1 lbs down from 2 weeks ago and now 10.1 lbs down since Nov. when I seriously committed.
AND I had a high sodium lunch and dinner yesterday so the loss is not water.
I attribute the no alcohol to improving the state of my fat burning machine (liver). And maybe it's balancing out my hormones which have been a disaster.
I'm aiming to report another 2 lb. drop or more by end of Feb. It's all in my power to do it.10 -
@globalhiker CONGRATULATIONS! Wow, wow you should be so proud of your accomplishments!
I listened to a neuropsychologist from NYU speak on Doctor’s radio a couple of days ago (reflections of a Dry January) and he explained something really interesting.
His opinion is there are many, many, many levels of alcohol consumption (from occasional, and mild to excessive and serious) and his research indicates that individuals fall into one of four buckets of what they get out of drinking. They are: high reward, low reward, high relief and low relief.
I know I am mostly high reward, meaning I include wine (associate with) fun and celebrations and the act of drinking escalates my reward of doing so. Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a good thing.
Then I can fall into the high relief when I have used A to cope with stressful situations. I think a low relief person is drinking but not finding enjoyment or relief anymore.
I usually don’t like to quote things without citing the source so I’m going to see if I can find the research or article and share it.
Have a great weekend my LA friends.4 -

Good morning LESS alcohol group
Last night we dined at a new swanky Italian place we have been passing for 18 months. They had no beverage choices I wanted which blew me away. So I ordered the same Italian IPA my husband ordered. Glad I did, one sip in and I found it nasty. Slid my glass over to my husband to consume. Then I had lemon water brought to the table for me to drink.
On a positive note, my mushroom ravioli was out of this world.
Here is a link to an interesting way to unwind without alcohol in your beverage. It is Aplos, made of hemp. Forgive me if someone here or past already posted this and I did not see that info.

I'm one of those people who happen to think Valentine's Day is the stupidest "holiday" on earth. I'll do a few extras for my kids because they're kids and they buy into the stupid one day a year Cupid and hearts.
And, I don't like professional football so I don't care about going to or getting drunk to watch a stupid game.
There are no great reasons for me to celebrate with alcohol this month. Is there ever? Maybe, maybe not.5 -
It’s raining and storming here today…a good day to stay inside and get organized for the week ahead.
Had a lovely early night out at a beautiful Italian restaurant with family yesterday. I did enjoy a delicious planned Chardonnay with a flavorful meal - grilled salmon over spinach with lemon and olive oil. Skipped the dessert which I’m avoiding altogether. Had an extra glass and a half when I returned home and am okay with it. Today, I’ll be back to AF until end of next week.
DH and I are completely off all sugar and it seems to be making a big difference in sleep and weight loss for us. Giving up the good chocolate (temporarily) is super hard because I was having it almost everyday but am baking with monk fruit and GF flour for the occasional treat this month.
Take care of yourself today!5 -

Yep, had wine. Yep, had too much wine. Back to AF
Didn't feel that great this morning. Woke up with a headache. Haven't had that happen in a long long time, so I'm taking that to mean the alcohol is really out of my system after years of daily consumption. A good thing. Up and onward...

I went out to lunch with friends and I had no say over the place and it turned out to be one of 2 restaurants in my area that has "the really great Pinot Grigio". This means it's Italian, a brand not found in our stores, almost ice cold, a really heavy pour, and it's fairly cheap. Earlier in the morning, I had gotten up super-early, worked out 1.5 hours at the gym on an empty stomach, and just knew if I cleaned up and dashed out to drive 45 minutes to meet up at the restaurant midday I would be hungry, thirsty and tired which makes me vulnerable. So I opted to eat a small lunch before leaving, along with a coffee and when I got to the restaurant I really totally forgot all about the Pinot Grigio. I did order a meal but picked at the veggies and simply took the rest home. The important part was showing up and socializing with my friends for a few hours and I had a good time. I also made my husband happy since he got my leftovers.
Planning ahead is everything for me now.12 -

Just a quick hash and dash,
Been up to my elbows baking bread again...dang it. I am having a blast making dough's that are 75-100% hydration. Then baked on a hot stone, or in my case a cast iron pizza pan. Pan De Cristal is the type of bread. So tonight I treated myself to a glass of wine and it was lovely.
I did not go for seconds and I savored each sip and made it last about 45 min.

I spent the weekend working outside in our massive backyard, hauling branches to the burn pile and stacking firewood. Had a wine last night at dinner out (wasn’t about to cook after several hours outside working).

Monday morning greetings
This month once a week if I so desire I am planning a drink night. I am going to plan it based on my work schedule.
Something I hate about having a few drinks with dinner is waking up (full blown eyes open, wondering if I should start cleaning the house) in the wee hours of the morning. I know I can't get back to sleep and I know my eyes are going to look puffy from not getting my 8 hours rest.
So if I plan my 2 drink limit on the night before I have a day off at work I will not have puffy eye anxiety.

Hope you all had a good weekend and sending encouragement to anyone who needs it.
So, last night I really wanted a Proseco while I cooked dinner, but mindfully decided to open a Stella NA 0.0 and pour it into a heavy blue wine glass from Mexico. My little angel won! 😇. It was very tasty, so pretty and happy I stuck to my plan.
I slept all night and am now ready to tackle my to do list today.

When things don't go right, I have very little resolve and I HAVE to fix that. So yesterday was moving along...not an excellent day but not in the toilet as of yet. I was about to prepare dinner which included heating up chicken breast strips in the oven. I turned on the oven like I normally do and walked away. I heard "tick, tick, tick"....which wasn't normal.... a few minutes later, I smelled gas. I checked the stove and there was no heat or anything. I turned it off and waited about 5 minutes and turn it on again. Normally it defaults to 350 degrees but it said "pre" (like pre-heat). It made the noise again but nothing happened and started smelling gas again. .... So I can probably cook on the stovetop and use the microwave to heat the chicken. I put a ticket in with the apartment complex but I was concerned if it was continuing to leak gas as I now had a headache. I called the emergency maintenance line and long story short, they said call 911. I really didn't want to call 911 but I also wanted to be safe than sorry and also confirm that it was ok to use the stove top. I did and they told us to leave the apartment until the emergency team arrived. They were there in about 10 minutes and they checked it all out. At first they said it was nothing and I just didn't wait long enough for the oven to heat (which annoyed me) but then they realized that it wasn't working and it was emitting gas. They said what I smelled known as gas, really isn't gas, it's something they add to the gas to alert you of a potential leak... At any rate, they used this gas sensor and all was good and they cleared me to cook on the stove top so dinner was not a loss. So after all this...my husband says ..I'm making a drink, well I could use one as well. So that makes two days of alcohol and it shows on the scale. But up this morning, worked out and back on track for tracking, water, closing my rings and hitting protein. No alcohol today...

Yesterday, I unintentionally ended up crafting a shirt for my son's 100th day of school. I started with pom balls but that didn't work, couldn't get them to stick after two attempts, so I scratched it and decided on another shirt. Stenciling with fabric markers was time consuming as they were faint and I wanted them darker plus the letters were fairly large. The project took approximately 5 hours between other aspects of life but it looked so nice at the end. I had no nagging wine feelings. I need to do more crafting.8
-
@LoveyChar I love that you made a cool shirt for your son! Crafting IS a fun distraction!

I used to be a pretty big beer drinker (micro brew IPAs were my favourite), and have found that having access to good non-alcoholic beer has really helped. When I go out to eat with friends, I've made sure that non-alcoholic beer or hop water are available. (Alcohol-free cocktails aren't a great option for me, as I'm not a big fan of cocktails in the first place.) This way I don't feel like I'm missing out.
But, I went out to dinner with my parents tonight, and I think it must have been the first time since I've stopped drinking. I didn't even look to see if they had non-alcoholic options, just drank water. It helps that my mom doesn't generally drink, and water from good restaurant glasses tastes better!10 -

I do enjoy a glass of red with dinner. Once this passes after dinner the craving stops. I feel this is achievable if I set my mind to it!8
