@xbowhunter I feel ya- started the month with the best intentions but last night was first AF day...there's still the rest of the month!
Same goal, Mon-Thurs AF - this weekend we're heading to the mountains with some good friends whom we also tend to have a few with but as we have 3 kids 6 and under, I'm guessing it will be a bit more low key than usual out of necessity

Early meetings for the next 3 mornings means AF days. It’s crazy to think I used to imbibe daily and then get up and go to work! Happy for progress.

Thats 2 days in a row with NA! I'm feeling good about that. No wine with my venison steak dinner yesterday was truly challenging!

I was forced to give up wine a long time ago due to stomach issues. It was really hard! Habits are choices that have become routine. Making a new one takes time.
Now beer (particularly strong IPAs) will give me stomach (among other) issues. I had 1-2 beers (and other drinks) most nights of December, for example. I’m dry since 1/1. There have been some challenging moments!

I feel I'm at a turning point with alcohol. It's starting to make me feel ill as well so it's time to listen to my body and stop poisoning it!8 -

For some reason, LA in February is less challenging that January (hallelujah) and I’m happy that I’m looking at having wine for special occasions and not a day to day thing for me. It does take time for new habits to stick. AF last night and counting AF again for today!

While it may look like I'm a newbie to MFP, I am not. I deleted my acct a few weeks ago. I want to do a reset just like I'm doing a reset with quitting alcohol. I had been a member for many years and did a few challenges that Spark people brought over, but was never consistent. When I first joined, I was crushing it, but then I let alcohol and bad choices mess it all up.
I've done Annie Grace's stuff and read a ton of books on quitting, but keep going back to drinking. I am so tired of feeling like crap and not sleeping well. At this point, I have switched over to NA beer and seltzers. So thankful for Total Wine and More. They have lots of great selections. I know some people can't go that route, but it has been a game changer for me. 4 days now and no alcohol.

@I_am_motivated : don’t feel you must do this alone. Engage professionals as you are able. The road to sobriety is hard, but it is well worn.

I'm newish here, and new to posting. I have two primary goals for February (and beyond):
1) lose weight
2) avoid numbing my emotions/to really live life
I've determined that the best/most efficient way to accomplish (1) is by not ordering restaurant delivery food, which I end up doing almost every time I drink at home.
Avoiding alcohol is a necessary step for me to meet both goals (1) and (2). This is my first real attempt to cut out drinking. For me, I know I'll fail if avoiding alcohol is the goal in and of itself. I'm excited to join you all in this journey, and I wanted to write out my goals and this seemed like as good a place as any to do that.9 -
I drank more than planned this past weekend. We went out both Friday and Saturday nights and I had 3 drinks both nights.
This week I am going to allow myself a glass of wine during the week as long as it fits within my calories. I am struggling with being AF Sunday through Wednesday, so at this point, if it fits, it sits. Weekend meals out kill my calorie count though, so in that case I’m going to limit to two per day. Ugh this is hard.9 -

Had 2 extra glasses of wine last night. Not in my plan that should have been zero glasses.

I really appreciate all the time and effort that was put into collecting all the info for this group. Lots of great info. It is definitely more doable to succeed quitting alcohol when you have help from others. So thankful to have found this group. Everybody is so kind and not ashamed to share moments of weakness.
Do y'all feel that drinking N/A beverages defeats the purpose of quitting or shouldn't count as an AF day? I know it's personal preference, but I feel so much better after 5 days of no alcohol. I did drink n/a beverages on those 5 days.
I am in a destination that thrives on drinking. Fine time to quit drinking. LOL. I'm at an RV resort where they have two Tiki Huts with full bar. My husband and I are part-time RVers and parked it for 2 months (Jan-Feb) to get away from the cold. I'll be glad to get away from the temptation as I have a bad case of FOMO.

@I_am_motivated to answer your question re: N/A drinks - In my opinion, just as you said, it is entirely up to personal preference and what your specific goals are. I personally do not consider them as drinks on my AF days whether it is a few drops of bitters in my sparkling water or an N/A beer but will still track the NA beer in my food diary as they do have calories.4

@i.am.motivated The main premise behind this group is to choose Less Alcohol and in my opinion, a Stella NA 0.0 beer is a non-alcoholic beverage and I might have one on an AF day as there is no alcohol in the product. But I don't drink them too often and prefer sparkling flavored waters. Hope that helps!4

Whatever it takes to go NA is a good plan. After a few weeks you will find you are probably wont bother with the NA beverages and save yourself some $...8 -
N/A drinks don't have alcohol, so if your goal is to cut back on/ stop drinking alcohol, I don't think there's any basis for counting those as alcohol drinks.
Whether you are still meeting your ultimate goal may be a different question. For example, if the reason for cutting back on alcohol is to decrease drink calories, choosing N/A beverages may not be where you ultimately want to end up, but they're still not alcohol.
For some, N/A drinks help people avoid alcohol. For others (this is the camp I think I'd be in), it may be a trigger to drink alcohol.
Find what works for you.
But again, N/A drinks don't contain alcohol, so they don't count as alcoholic drinks.7 -
I believe I already know the answer to this question, but I'm putting it out here to " The Group" for comments anyway. Has anyone been successful in convincing a loved one, friend or spouse, to look at their [the loved one's] drinking habits and modify them ?? Looking at myself, I'd say it's only possible to change one's own habits, and only if you yourself want to.
Little background...drunk ex-SIL has been a daily overdrinker since a teen, going on 40 years now. After 20 years DD gave up, got a divorce and is now happily remarried for 7 years. His current gal friend of 5 years is a super sweet person who is now expressing extreme annoyance at the alcohol abuse, threatening to quit him. Ex-SIL drunk-called DD last week [they share a son] all mopey about life in general, and DD asked him if he had ever considered going to AA ?? His response was "WOW !!"...as in, that's a ridiculous idea, doesn't apply to ME, I have no problem. I think
that's the first time anyone has dared suggest to him that his behavior is problematic.
Should we continue to just tip-toe around this issue, or is there a way to wake him up ?? 40 years is a long time to be in denial.
Me ?? One glass on the 1st of the month to go with a lovely steak dinner...then the bottle of Chianti was mysteriously empty. 🍷🍷🍷🍷 NA from then on, with no desire. Always easier to abstain rather than moderate, for me.

A touchy subject! lol
If you see someone with a drinking problem all you can do is mention it to them. The usual response will be denial. I had a nightly whisky on the rocks habit. My wife commented on it and of course I blew the comments off. But I think that was the seed she planted in my head. Got me thinking about it and she was 100% correct. So, I thanked her for bringing it up to me because it changed me for the better.8 -

NA substitutes do not defeat the purpose of quitting drinking! Go ahead and enjoy them. You still get the social aspect of a special drink in the right glass , so no need for FOMO. It’s a great substitute for alcohol. I hear there are a lot of great NA beers and even some NA spirits that are good. Alas and alack for us wine drinkers, NA wine is Gawd-awful.4 -
@forestdweller1 oh man that’s a tough one. Yes, you can share your concerns and hopefully plant the seed, but ultimately the person will change when they are ready. And that holds true for alcohol, losing weight, taking charge of their health, quitting cigarettes, over-shopping. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.
One glass tonight at wine night. I was am tempted by a second glass when I got home, but resisted. It fit in my calories so goal achieved!6 -
@forestdweller1 wouldn’t it be nice if planting the seed would result in a seedling growing right away? My experience with this same situation is that the seed often lays dormant… just like leading that horse to water, but being unable to make him drink. Good luck.
