LESS Alcohol ~ FEBRUARY 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

Hello LA friends and happy Friday!
Really like catching up on the relevant conversations about LA this morning along with my coffee!
It was decided two days ago that we are having a Super Bowl party / family birthday party for my 40 yr. DS on Sunday and it will be alcohol free but with all the food, decorations and cake of course. He quit on his own about a year and a half ago (whiskey, tequila) and I couldn’t be more grateful. I told his wife whom is ‘driving’ the party I would have yummy non-alcoholic beverages and I just said “let’s do no alcohol” which really means she and I won’t have any wine.
To be honest, my DS has enjoyed a highly successful career and I was starting to worry for him because of my own family history (paternal dad and gpa were self professed AA goers long ago). But, he did this on his own in his own time when he was ready. We’ve actually started talking about LA in general (and cannabis) which is creating greater closeness. I mean when my adult son calls and wants to talk for an hour, I’m always going to drop everything for him!
Thanks for listening!

I’m planing for some alcohol on Saturday night at a nice dinner. I’m invited to a superbowl party on Sunday, but it must be AF or I won’t feel good on Monday. Not worth it! (We’ll most certainly leave early.)7

We went golfing yesterday! Two weeks ago I was skiing, and yesterday I was golfing. Go figure! I love this kiss of spring, although I know we’re in for more winter weather soon. I stuck to my plan of no more than two glasses of wine, and made a great choice for dinner out- kale salad with grilled salmon. Of course I over-did it on the Girl Scout Cookies when I got home, but I did not get completely derailed. Hope everyone has a great day!6

My dog passed away on Wednesday. Didn't know it would be this hard, that I'd miss her this much. She was a beautiful soul and I will forever love her and I'm grateful for the time we did have together. You don't know what you got 'til it's gone... I am heartbroken. I hope I get to be with her again one day. This house is a very sad place right now.
Still no alcohol this month but I did buy some bottles of wine recently, considering a glass tonight or tomorrow. Spring break seems like an eternity away at the moment. Husband's friend and his wife took us out to dinner last night at a very upscale restaurant to thank my husband for helping him with some repairs around friend's house. One of the bottles I bought was on display as the bottle is very pretty. I have no idea what it will taste like but I'm imagining it must be good to have a special spot. The whole restaurant and aviance was beautiful and I've never seen so many wine bottles before in one place. I definitely want to go back one day.10 -
She would have been 12 years old on April 2nd. I'm going to memorialize her in a few different ways. It's been incredibly difficult but my middle child, seventeen years old, is having a really rough time with it, too. We'll get her ashes back and spread them in happy places she enjoyed with words we'll write, have some jewelry made (daughter's idea) with Char's ashes and I'm going to make a few different collages and pictures made to keep her memory alive. She was so good to us, loving and protective...8

Went out for dinner last night, which involved wine. Tonight is a Mardi Gras party, which I plan on a couple of drinks. My data below includes yesterday and today’s 🍷.

I'm not planning for any drinks today but that could change so waiting to post today's number later. I am still finding abstinence easier than limiting, but slowly improving there.
I am definitely happy with my progress since joining this group in January 2023. Prior to that I was drinking almost daily so definitely some improvement there.
@I_am_motivated, I have to agree with the others, if the drink is alcohol free, then you should count it as a non-alcholic drink. I don't think a vegetarian would count a Beyond Buger as meat, or vegan cheese as dairy etc., if that analogy helps at all.
@LoveyChar, so sorry for your loss. I don't think we are ever prepared for how difficult it is to lose a beloved pet.

Sorry for your loss. I totally understand. I just lost my 14 year old puggle this past July. I've had tons of dogs in my life but this one ..... was special and it broke my heart. What kind of dog was Char?6 -
@LoveyChar ...losing a beloved furry family member is so hard. What you are doing in her memory is very special.

Thanks y'all for sharing your views on dealing with a problem drinker who hasn't yet realized they have a problem. Small, quiet steps...
Kept thinking about opening a bottle of wine last night. Again, again, again. Finally caved and had a Coors Edge. [Pats self on back]
Mardi Gras is coming...St. Patrick's Day follows soon after....so many boozy holidays...so little won't power !!6 -

@LoveyChar so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. It’s so hard, they are like family. Your memorials sound lovely.
@tmbg1 sorry to hear you are struggling this month. I empathize. We’re here for you.2 -
Stuck to my two drink goal last night (Old Fashioned), and didn’t even finish the second one (which, after I ordered it, I realized I didn’t really want it). Checking in with this group has really helped me stick to my goals this week. So happy!
We took our DS out for his 25th birthday last night. It was so great to see him! He’s going for National Guard training this week, and I won’t see him for four months. I already miss him! Oh and also, how is it that I have a kid who is a QUARTER OF A CENTURY years old?????5 -
Decorated the house yesterday with my DDIL and we’re almost ready for the birthday/Super Bowl! Will make snacks closer to the afternoon and we have our NA beer and virgin mojitos ready to go. Had my good white wine yesterday instead, and realized today that I didn’t measure my ounces, hence more than my limit. This is another habit I’m incorporating this month (more accurate tracking) for myself.
Aiming for 4 NA days in a row starting today.
May your NFL team play well today (ok, and WIN)!! 🏈🏈🏈

After a boozy weekend (less than I would have drank 3 months ago, but still more than I needed) the scale was not playing nice this morning. Definitely a combination of empty alcohol calories and party snacks. Yikes!!!6 -

So sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel. I lost my black lab girl Jan 2021 and I still miss her dearly. I have a new girl chocolate lab female in my life and that helped me alot but I still miss her.

Good morning my less alcohol friends!
As per usual I ate and drank too much over the weekend. Time to be AF this week to get rid of the water weight... uggggg!

Hello everyone,
Took me a bit to catch up on all your posts. Sorry for the family/dog loss. We lost our girl over 10 years ago and just never could bring ourselves to search for another.
Relative(s)/family members who indulge aI bit much is a tough call. I know I sure denied any thought that there may be a problem being a daily drinker for 25+ years. And yes you have to be ready for a change and then put in the work......as they say work in progress-that would be me.
I am staying pretty much AF these past 6-8 weeks. However last week we went out twice and I had my IPA's both times. BUT the big game? Not a drop, go figure.
This weeks plan is we are doing an 'escape room' on Saturday for my SIL + DH combined birthdays. Then out to dinner. I may or may not have a beer, most likely not. I don't like to have an alcoholic drink then drive home, especially a longer distance on unfamiliar highways.
I have to say the scale has only seen increases, I seem to be replacing the sugars from A with snacking. I just can't seem to rein this one in yet.
We joined the YMCA this weekend, and plan to swim 5 mornings a week, I may skip a swim for step aerobics which I enjoy. We will see, but it is great to do this with DH.

Had a great time with my family yesterday, and let’s just say I ate everything I wanted, and allowed myself a very small piece of ice cream birthday cake for my DS’s 40th. We were successful in making it a no alcohol party as DDIL brought Guinness zero NA draught beer, and I had Stella NA 0.0. After the game was over, I cleaned the kitchen, washed all the dishes then put my feet up with a small amount of Pinot Noir.
Luckily we’re in the PST - I sure was wound up for awhile!
Back on track today…..no sugar, and several AF days are planned for this week.

@lmlmrn - Your AF numbers are so inspiring!
A huge congrats on that one. Swimming is supposed to be an excellent exercise as well. I heard the escape rooms are becoming popular now!
@xbowhunter - the photo you shared is worth a thousand words. We had to say goodbye to a beautiful chocolate lab then waited two years before finding our next cream Labrador puppy. She’s now 10!
@LoveyChar - my heart goes out to you and all who have lost a beloved animal. I know personally it can be so incredibly painful. Your pup was so lucky to have you!

I did the planned boozing at our Valentine's dinner on Sat: Two normal 12oz lagers and shared sips of brandy with dessert. Lovely! My wife ordered a fancy mocktail and one glass of wine plus sips of the brandy. I'm proud of her as she hasn't taken on the less-alcohol ever before.
That was my first alcohol night of 2024. Will wonders never cease?
And the we went to a Super bowl party on Sunday. I brought ginger beer and Atheletic AF beer. Wife had a little sangria at the start of the evening, but not much really. I stayed AF. Will wonders never cease?
I'm on a 6 day course of prednisone to clear up my asthma from a cold I had weeks ago. It makes me feel like I want to jump out of my skin. I kind of like it, but it definitely makes me edgy.
Plans: AF until our island get-away at the end of the month. On said get-away, I will definitely want some alcohol just about every day, but the goal is to keep a lid on it so I can be active every morning. A bit of jogging at sunrise, for example. Swimming in the big ocean. That's the good stuff, not the alcohol!
Best resolve to everyone!7 -

I've been out of pocket but not drinking or thinking about it until NOW. No drinks on Superbowl Sunday either. Now I am facing mid-month with a planned drinking event tomorrow and the big challenge will be self-control on the quantity. I may drive out of my way to just get 2 mini wines at World Market. Because if my husband brings home a champagne bottle (he would since our local store does not have the good "mini" wines), I will drink the whole thing. OK decision made.
@tmbg1 sending hugs and strength your way. I have been running on anxious and sad side since I have to get surgery next month and my energy is zapped. I am going to force myself to go online and buy myself a variety of small gifts. Sounds goofy but when I am home recovering, it will make me smile. I should try to also get some sunshine today since I have been cooped up inside (too much rain and cold) and it's wearing me down.
@LoveyChar deeply sorry to hear about your family's loss - pet dogs are wonderful family forever in our hearts.6 -

OMG me too!!! What is it about cheese and crackers, chips and dip and pizza bagels that make me want to feed at the trough??? All Super Bowl Food, plus 3 glasses of wine meant I was wearing my stretchy pants yesterday! Haha!3 -

Feeling your pain, there, Big Guy!2 -
I had a lot on my mind yesterday, and my planned one glass of wine turned into one and a half. Not horrible, still in my calories for the day. However, I was starting to feel the effects of that extra half glass of wine and slept poorly last night. Luckily today it’s snowing, a lot of things are closed, and I see a nap in my future!3
